President: Grant Sheldon Editorial Executive: Stephen Roe Volume 78 Issue 37 Tuesday 9 th April 2013 This Week s Meeting: Today s meeting was opened by a presentation to President Grant. Myanmar Project Officer, Tim Anderson said that the recent delegation was afforded a visit to the Yangon State Parliament and the Chief Minister asked that a gift be passed to our Club s Chief Minister. President Grant gratefully accepted a mother-ofpearl inlaid trinket box which will become a prized memento of his time at the helm of our Club. International Chair, Simon Cookson displayed a selection of hand-made quilts which the delegation had purchased from a young lady who had made them using an antiquated Chinese sewing machine. Simon advised that three extra sewing machines had been donated by our Club to assist in quilt production, with the funds raised from quilt sales supporting local families. Generous support by those attending today s meeting saw all quilts sold raising $235! Lisa Lowcock then announced that the total amount raised for this year s Relay For Life was $11,500, a magnificent effort. Congratulations to Lisa, her dedicated group of workers and all who participated in our team effort for this wonderful cause. President Grant also welcomed back our lovely exchange student Charlotte, fresh from her outback safari, although she admitted she has had enough of bus travel to last her for quite a while. Charlotte had an amazing three week trip through the Alice and Uluru, North Queensland and then back down the east coast. She brought back a cold but insists it was due to all the early mornings, not the late nights! We will enjoy a farewell presentation from Charlotte on the 11 th of June. Today s guest speaker was our current Victoria Police mentoree, Inspector Graham Banks. Graham was introduced by his Rotary mentor, Barbara Wyatt, the sixth of our members to take on the role since the program began in Although originally aimed at police officers of inspector rank, the program has become so popular that higher-ranking officers are also keen to participate to improve their professional knowledge and skills and to increase their understanding of and engagement with their local communities through involvement with a Rotary Club.

Graham joined Victoria Police in 1989 at the age of 20 and was initially assigned to traffic duty in the city. In his first two weeks on the job, he was confronted with the scene of a young girl having been stabbed, with the resultant arrest only made possible through the observance and cooperation of private citizens. This demonstrated to Graham the importance of community involvement in everyday police work and serves to highlight the relevance of the current mentoring program. Graham then joined the staff at Broadmeadows for two years, and completed a three year stint with the Transit Police, two of which were in plain clothes targeting graffiti artists! Following a 12 month transfer to Williamstown, Graham became a detective and worked with several units including the Fraud Squad and was a senior investigator as part of a Royal Commission. He returned to Williamstown as a Sergeant and then spent seven years at Fawkner, the last three as station commander. He has recently been promoted to the role of Western Region Crime Inspector and from his office in Geelong administers a huge area encompassing Warrnambool, Portland, Swan Hill, Mildura, Bendigo, Ballarat and Gisborne. Whilst in charge at Fawkner, over half of Graham s staff members were subjected to physical assault. Many of the offenders suffered from mental illness and carried HIV or hepatitis which posed a serious health risk to the police involved. Despite this, the station recorded the state s lowest level of unplanned leave which Graham attributed (apart from good management) to job satisfaction borne largely from well established community partnerships. This led to the presentation of annual awards by local Rotary clubs and the local council to police members who contributed most significantly to their community. Graham noted that a major change during his career was the ever-expanding electronic media coverage and that most police activity is now subject to immediate and extensive scrutiny. Graham s time on the force has convinced him that policing is more effective when carried out in cooperation with local residents and he encouraged all of us to be proactive in conversing with our local police on patrol. Rotarians at Work Graffiti Clean Up Day Our graffiti clean up day will be held on Sunday 21 April in Rose and Russell Streets Essendon. Moonee Valley City Council is generously supplying all paint and equipment for the event to be held from 9am pm. A BBQ lunch will follow for the many hard workers. Please bring your own chair. It is a great chance to show residents that our Rotary Club cares about the local community. Please support this worthy activity and place your name on the list at next Tuesday s meeting. Richard Lawrence proudly displaying the Rotarians at Work safety vest to be worn at the event

39 Richard Lawrence and Denis Rietdyk were the winners today with a second prize being donated by VicPol mentoree, Graham Banks, but the joker is still in hiding. Jackpot now $290 Bring a prospective member to lunch and pay only 50% of the cost of lunch for the first two lunches for your guest. 5 A few memories from this year s Myanmar Delegation.

Was Paul Harris the first president of a Rotary club? Although Paul Harris was the founder and organiser of the first Rotary club in Chicago in 1905, the man selected to be the first president was one of the other founding members, Silvester Schiele. By 1910 there were 16 Rotary clubs, which linked up as an organisation called the National Association of Rotary Clubs. Several years later the name was changed to International Association of Rotary Clubs as Rotary was organised in Winnipeg, Canada, and then in England, Ireland and Scotland. In 1922 the name was shortened to Rotary International. When the first organisation of Rotary clubs was created in 1910, Paul Harris was selected as the first president. He served in this position for two years, from 1910 until Thus, the founder of Rotary, who declined to be president of the first club, became the first president of the worldwide organisation, Rotary International. Unusual Make-up Meetings Which Rotarians have to travel farthest for a make-up meeting? The 34 members of the Rotary Club of Papeete, Tahiti, which is located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, belong to the club that is most remote from any other. The southernmost Rotary meeting is that of the Rotary Club of Base Marambio-AntArtida in Antarctica. To visit the northernmost club, you must travel to the Rotary Club of Svalbard on the Svalbard island group far north of the Norwegian mainland. It is said that a Rotary meeting is held somewhere in the world every hour of every day. If you attended one meeting per day, it would take more than 80 years to visit all of the 34,000 Rotary clubs in the world, by which time there would be thousands more new clubs to attend! Donations in Kind West Footscray Store In 12 years the value of Australian Overseas Aid supply by this Store is $37,000,000 without Government assistance

A man with tickets to the AFL Grand Final finds his seat and relaxes. As he sits down, a man comes down and asks if anyone is sitting in the seat next to him. "No", he says. "The seat is empty." "That's incredible", said the stranger. "Who in their right mind would have a seat like this for the AFL Grand Final and not use it?" "Well, actually, the seat belongs to me. I was supposed to come with my wife, but she passed away. This is the first Grand Final we haven't been to together since we got married in 1967." The stranger replies, "Oh...I'm so sorry to hear that. That's terrible. Couldn't you find someone else - a friend or relative, or even a neighbour to take the seat?" The man shakes his head. "No. They're all at the funeral." Helpful tips for the week.. Use a micro-fibre cloth to prevent frost from forming on the windshield. How to keep the straw from rising out of your fizzy drink can. Use a comb to keep a nail steady for hammering.
