We are, once again grateful to local defence personnel as well as to Elders (Kincaid Street) for making their office and warehouse available for this event. The next Board Meeting will be Wednesday August 8 at 6pm. The Official Visit of our District Governor, John Glassford, for this Rotary Year will be our 16 th August meeting. Remember to keep free 3 rd November for the Darkness to Light fundraising dinner. SHORT & SWEET. FINES MASTER SESSION. Glendyn Groves provided a summary of the imminent changes to the NSW Police Highway Patrol fleet. Locally manufactured Holden and Ford V8 sedans, being no longer available, will be replaced by imported police special editions from BMW 530d and Chrysler 6.2-litre V8. Safety is a key priority for police when searching for new cars. Also the platform of both vehicles supports the state-of-the-art technology that is key to the focus on reducing incidents of road trauma across NSW. Graeme Callander raised plenty of money from all parties with rounds of trivia questions directed at each table. Gerry Page won a lovely bottle of invisible wine as a door prize. And Peter Veerhuis told a gory but clean joke involving a dead horse, a bath, and a know-it-all getting his comeuppance.
3 KEY-NOTE SPEAKER. Glendyn Groves introduced his guests for the evening, Judith Hall from RC Young, and Nelly Shepard, a recently returned Rotary Exchange Student who lives in Wagga. Judith is the District Chairperson for Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) and spoke to the Club about RYE from a Rotary point of view. Nelly regaled us with tales of her year in Sweden in The District Committee of eight members is made up of Rotarians and non- Rotarians. RYE promotes among other worthwhile aims world peace and youth leadership, particularly in international relations. RYE is the most respected student exchange program around the world. The keys to success are its reciprocal arrangements and good networks. Students stay with three to four families in a district over the course of a year, and preferably attend the one high school. The host families are not necessarily Rotary families, and RYE can be a good opportunity to bring new people to Rotary. It cost Clubs who get involved with RYE $150 per month per sponsorship. Students are usually in Years 9, 10 or 11. Nelly spoke about her experience abroad. She was sponsored by Rotary Wollundry Club and only 15 years old when she arrived in Sweden. She is now a very mature 17-year old. Her exchange was a mindbroadening time with the opportunity to discover herself and the world. She had lots of support from her host families, to whom she grew very close. Modern internet communications made it easier to overcome home sickness. She was happy with the preparation and training she received before her trip. Brad Bland gave the usual Vote of Thanks. NEXT MEETING: - Next week we will see us mix business and pleasure. The meeting has been declared a Fellowship Night but President Peter will seek your ideas and input for the Board s planning of the coming Rotary year. PERSONAL JOTTINGS: - REPORTED TO BE ON THE SICK LIST. Jenny Gorrel is reported to be recovering from a fracture to her arm as a result of a recent accident. No doubt Graham is brushing up on his nursing skills. Best wishes for your speedy recovery Jenny. TERRY & FRAN MECHAM. The most recent report puts our grey nomads in the Alice Springs area enjoying the sights. Terry reports that the town plan at Alice reminds him of Laurie Fromholtz with all the round-abouts. The other reminder of home is the freezing nights. CHARLIE BLOMFIELD. A recent communication received from our good friend and past member Charlie, you may recall that he now lives in Tathra which suffered devastating bush fires last March. The recovery from the fires demonstrates the resilience of the local community which is very grateful for the moral and financial support received from far and wide. The bottom line is that Tathra is back in business and keen to spread that word for the coming tourist season. If you get the opportunity to support the region in this, it will be most appreciated. In addition, Charlie reported that the local Rotarians have just completed a Book Fair which raised about $15,000. which will go to Community Care Accommodation and Tathra Bushfire Recovery.
