Just like a marriage...sometimes ten years seem like yesterday and sometimes it feels like forever! (Just kidding...wives!) We are very proud of what we have accomplished in the last ten years at JLS. Although we will no longer be actively showing our own JLS cattle, we will be participating on the sidelines, supporting and cheering for the JLS show animals purchased by our customers: thus, continuing the JLS Winning Tradition. Two years of severe drought were a challenge. In the long run, thought, it made our cattle better by more discriminatory culling and alternate ways of management. The Brangus breed proved, once again, their heat tolerance. About this offering: Every pair in this sale is a first or second calf heifer. We re sharing the heart of our future. The older worn out cows have been culled. We re also sharing our Breeding Up program by selling an interest in two of our outstanding 3/4 bull calves. Not many cattle of any breed have an of 6.! Take a close look at the black bull calf, 612Y2. Sometimes in the past we did try to keep the best show animals for our JLS show circuit, but as many of you know, we have sold many champions and often in the show ring I was beaten by a purchased JLS animal. This time, we are selling all of our show cattle. This includes new prospect show animals and our entire experienced female show cattle from Houston. In this sale, we are selling seven of our top spring yearling bulls. One is a 3/4 brother to Duke, Show Bull of the Year 11. Since the rains, the bull market has gotten very strong. This year s offering is younger than before because of the high demand for their older counterparts. Please come early. 4 T HE JLS PROGRAM... What JLS International Is All About... :: WHO :: JLS is owned by Jeff Smith from Alabama. The ranch is singly owned, no partners or associates. Jeff manages the Alabama ranch. He has been in the Brangus business for years. The Devine (Texas) ranch is run by Myron Saathoff. He has been in the Brangus business for 38+ years, with his show career longer than that. The JLS Texas Division began in the Fall of Jeff said to Myron, I ll buy the land, if you ll run it. That was the beginning of the Winning Tradition. Stability...Since one owner, one manager, no associate. The only people we have to make happy are ourselves and our customers. :: WHERE :: The JLS program is organized as follows: ROBERTSDALE, ALABAMA Jeff manages the Angus herd. He uses 3/4 blood bulls from new genetics. He produces heifer for replacement cattle. Multiple locations are used for this operation. DEVINE, TEXAS Myron manages the multi-generation, percentage cattle, and embryo work. Other land and cattle in South Texas are used for this operation for a total of four different locations. One of the South Texas locations is high fenced, and our Brangus cattle share the land and grass with a trophy whitetail deer population. :: WHAT :: We have a program. We never changed our goals because of the latest trends or fads. We just kept the type of cattle that please us and our customers. We developed a program based on predetermined objectives that were set from the beginning. We believe in functional cattle that have bone and guts, but at the same time, have eye appeal and are productive. 2

5 T HE JLS PROGRAM... To accomplish these goals, we have attempted to be progressive, cost efficient with never losing sight of our objectives. We do not breed for the show ring. Our record has shown that we breed functional cattle with eye appeal that are accepted by the commercial cattlemen, the show ring and registered cattlemen. Champions produce Champions! Our program has dominated. Retired former champions are still producing champions. Every animal has gone back into our breeding program and has been successful both in the show ring and as producers. We sell our females at our annual sale the first weekend of May. We sell our bulls in some consignment sales during the year and our annual sale: however, the bulk of our bulls are sold private treaty. (Approximately 175 per year) :: HOW :: We have concentrated on fostering our present genetics, and developing new genetics. :: Breeding up program of new genetics Angus cattle 1/4 blood 1/2 blood 3/4 blood :: Added Red Brangus to our program. We felt that the Red Brangus breeders had so much to offer that we wanted to be a part of it. :: Furthering our present genetics AI Embryo transplant Cloning presently we have five clones at the Devine location from the original 915C cow. We are doing all of this while never losing sight of our objectives. We monitor and double check ourselves to make sure we are still on track using weights, measurements and checking ribeye data. Feedback from our customers also provides us with more information. :: WHY :: Why have we been successful? Not only the cattle business, but for any business to last as long as we have, three things had to be present. 1. Honesty 2. Integrity. For both honesty and integrity, you either have it or you don t. 3. Trust. This has to be earned. You can t buy it. When you buy from JLS, you re buying a piece of a program backed by many years of experience, honesty, integrity, and we will earn your trust. Extreme drought and unbelievable hay prices forced many to re-evaluate their programs. On a positive note, cattle numbers are at an all-time high. Better yet, we are getting rain and it s green once again. Myron and Jeff have continued the winning tradition along with several juniors that have made purchases in past sales. Many champions came to the front at major shows carrying the JLS prefix. This sale will be no different. Besides the halter broke heifers, there are lots of pairs with show heifer and herd sire prospects at side. There will be something for everyone.
