8 The 2012 Big Picture Female Sale DENNIS GARWOOD FAMILY Road Atkinson, NE (402) (402) Dear friends, What a year it has been at Green Valley! Our mild winter started with a great National Western Stock Show where our pen of Maine-Anjou bulls was selected as the AMAA People s Choice award winner for 2012; and exciting accomplishment for sure. Spring came quickly and with it our largest calf crop yet and, likewise, our 22nd Big Picture Sire Sale was the largest and best we have had so far. We are grateful to you, our valued customers, for your continued support and for giving us such a great start to the year. The summer of 2012, however, has been a challenge in the Sandhills of Nebraska. Like the summer of 2002, this summer will be used as a reference point for ranchers due to the extreme drought that has affected such a large area of the country. It is said that past experiences help us to get through present challenges, and I hope the thought that we have been here before and come through fine will aid you in overcoming this challenging summer. It was just 12 months ago that we offered a free round bale of hay to our southern customers that purchased cattle here to assist them through a similar drought. My, how things change. Our cows, however, must have learned from their previous challenges because they thankfully have come through the summer just fine and given us the best set of calves we have weaned yet. We have trimmed our numbers just a bit for this female sale but increased the quality significantly. We are sharing the very best heifer calves from our 2012 spring crop here along with the most elite selection of Green Valley cows that we have ever offered including the dams of leading GVC sires like Suh, Settler, and Maverick among other very accomplished producers. Please note that we are retaining some embryo collection rights on a few of the calves as this is the only way we know to enable us to offer the cream of the crop. I continue to be excited and encouraged by the success our junior customers have been having with their GVC females. Over the last two summers, GVC females have won titles in Nebraska, South Dakota, Kansas, Iowa, Indiana, Missouri, and Ohio that we are aware of. It is very gratifying to learn of the success of the cattle and we are very appreciative of the hard work that our junior customers put forth. We will continue to try to make the cattle better for you and we think have some great options this year. Tom Osborne, one of my heroes, once said Work hard, stay focused, and surround yourself with great people. We will work hard to make our Green Valley cattle as good as we can make them by staying focused on our Big Picture principles of quality, uniformity, maternal strength, udder quality and EPD excellence based on accurate and complete reporting of data. I have surrounded myself with the great people I work with everyday like my family, my wife, Sandra, and my assistants, Corey Pacha and Merlyn Williams plus all of the hands that assist with our Big Picture sales. I am pleased to be surrounded by such excellent people. Thank you for your interest and continued support. I hope you see as much opportunity in these cattle and the beef business as I do and I hope to see each of you on sale day. Please contact me should you have any questions. Respectfully, Dennis Garwood P.S. By far, the best part of the last 12 months was the arrival of two new Baby Garwoods! Vance and Ellie welcomed Stella Kathryn and Sarah and Tyson welcomed Brynn Anniston. Garwood Family, Our summer 2012 family getaway to Maine! I hope the summer has treated you well. As time grows on and gets closer to the end of September, I get more and more excited thinking about my chance to show off my calf challenge steer, Dakota. If you do not know, this is my first time showing a beef animal and Dakota and I have had a pretty good run, I would say. I have shown Dakota at many open class, 4-H, and FFA shows My steer has competed against another Catch A Calf in our area. It is nice to compete just to see who each other are doing and how the progress is going. I am thrilled to see the other 19 calves and see their growth from November 2011 to September I have learned so much from the Calf Challenge program and am bummed I cannot participate in it again, but I am thankful. When people ask me about my steer and want me to explain AK-SAR-BEN and Calf Challenge, I go on and on, talking with excitement about the awesome experience I have had. I cannot express my thankfulness to have a ranch like you to help me have this opportunity and I will never forget. I hope I will see you in Omaha at AK-SAR-BEN 2012 and I will be able to meet you and thank you in person.
