2 T HE M ETROPOLITAN M USEUM OF A RT Dear Members and Friends of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The wild Scottish countryside with its moors that turn purple in summer, its wide lochs and romantic castles steeped in history, and its ancient standing stones is the dramatic backdrop for a spectacular summer Celtic Isles cruise from Edinburgh to Dublin. We are delighted to be joined on this voyage by Amelia Peck, the Metropolitan Museum s Marica F. Vilcek Curator of American Decorative Arts. Her knowledge of historic interiors and textiles will enrich our visits to the many country houses that will be opened especially for us. Also lecturing on board will be noted architectural historian and garden author, Dublin-based Patrick Bowe. Begin in the dynamic capital city of Edinburgh, where we will see the classical Georgian New Town and medieval Edinburgh Castle. We will be piped aboard Clipper Odyssey in the port of Leith for a first call at Aberdeen, renowned for its great university and nearby Crathes Castle, set in outstanding gardens. Highlights of our Scottish itinerary include discovery of prehistoric sites in the windswept Orkney Islands; a tour of 14th-century Cawdor Castle, the setting for Shakespeare s Macbeth; a visit to the magical isle of Iona, burial ground of Scottish Kings; and a walk in the famed Inverewe Gardens. Crossing the Irish Sea takes us to Northern Ireland, where we are invited to view the contents and gardens of several country houses, among the most attractive in Europe. We will visit not as tourists but as guests of their ancestral owners. There will be receptions and lunches at these great houses. Among our hosts will be the Duke and Duchess of Abercorn and Lord and Lady Dunleath. A lovely day in Dublin, with a private visit to Helen Dillon s world-renowned garden and a curatorial tour of the collections at the National Gallery, caps a memorable journey. We will also visit one of the most romantic castles in the Highlands Cawdor Castle, chosen by Shakespeare for the setting of his tragedy Macbeth. Clipper Odyssey sets a course for the Orkney Islands. KIRKWALL, SCOTLAND Wednesday, August 1 Jacobean painted ceiling, Crathes Castle. NEW YORK Saturday, July 28 Depart New York on an overnight flight to Edinburgh. EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND CLIPPER ODYSSEY Sunday, July 29 Step ashore this morning in the busy Orkney harbor town of Kirkwall to tour the remarkable Stone Age settlement of Skara Brae, buried under sand for thousands of years until its rediscovery and excavation. Continue to Maeshowe, a wellpreserved burial mound dating from around 2,800 B.C.E. Nearby are enigmatic prehistoric sites the Ring of Brodgar and the Standing Stones of Stenness. In the late evening, we cruise past the entrance to Scapa Flow, home of the Royal Navy during both World Wars. INVEREWE RHUM, SCOTLAND Thursday, August 2 Be on deck this morning as our ship enters picturesque Loch Ewe. Tour the magnificent Inverewe Gardens, where subtropical vegetation thrives and blooms year round due to Arrive in the vibrant capital of Georgian Edinburgh and join an architectural tour that follows the famed Royal Mile from Edinburgh Castle down to the Royal Palace of Holyroodhouse. Lunch is arranged at the renowned Balmoral Hotel before our visit to the Royal Yacht Britannia. Board the awaiting Clipper Odyssey in Leith, the port of Edinburgh. ABERDEEN, SCOTLAND Monday, July 30 Today discover the university city of Aberdeen. Visit 16thcentury Crathes Castle, renowned for its turrets, gargoyles, and exquisite painted ceilings. Its extensive gardens are a series of interconnected rooms bordered by yew hedges, some of which are 200 years old. Later, visit the Aberdeen Art Gallery and the Maritime Museum. Alternatively, you may wish to view Dunnottar Castle, a cliff-top fortress in a dramatic setting overlooking the sea. During dinner on board, we sail toward Cromarty Firth. The purple heather should be at its peak. On the mountainous island of Rhum, we will visit, by special permission, an Edwardian shooting lodge. MULL IONA, SCOTLAND Friday, August 3 On the island of Mull, Tobermory s protected harbor creates an attractive anchorage for pleasure yachts; go ashore for a walk along the waterfront with its brightly painted houses. During lunch on board, Clipper Odyssey travels past Fingal s Cave on the Isle of Staffa, whose rugged beauty has inspired Keats, Turner, and Mendelssohn. Explore Iona, its 6th-century abbey, and the burial sites of Scottish kings. DERRY, NORTHERN IRELAND Saturday, August 4 This morning cruise past the spectacular scenery of Northern Ireland. The ship anchors at Portrush for a pastoral drive to Baronscourt, seat of the Duke and Duchess of Abercorn. We are invited for lunch and a tour of the paintings and decorative arts collections of this great Georgian house. After a relaxed walk through its gardens, we return to the ship. Isle of Staffa. BELFAST, NORTHERN IRELAND Sunday, August 5 Join a tour of this capital city, currently experiencing a renaissance. See the Ulster Museum, which houses an extensive collection of works by Irish painters, including Jack Yeats. Maritime enthusiasts may opt to visit the Titanic Museum. East of Belfast and surrounded by extensive parkland, Ballywalter Park is a country estate where we are invited by Lord and Lady Dunleath for a private lunch and a viewing of their family collections. We visit the 19th-century National Trust property of Mount Stewart, former home of the Marquesses of Londonderry. The palatial mansion is set in elaborately landscaped gardens created in the 1920s. Continue to Grey Abbey, the Georgian home of art collectors Mr. and Mrs. Montgomery, who have invited us for lunch. DUBLIN, IRELAND Tuesday, August 7 Today we are guests for coffee at the home of author Helen Dillon, whose urban garden is justly celebrated. Continue to the National Gallery, where Adrian Le Harivel, curator of British and Dutch paintings, will lead us through the collection. The afternoon is unscheduled for individual pursuits. 6 Edinburgh Castle. OPTIONAL EDINBURGH PRELUDE July 26 to 29, 2012 Thursday, July 26 Depart on an overnight flight to Edinburgh. Friday, July 27 Arrive in Edinburgh and transfer to the splendid and centrally located Balmoral Hotel. In the afternoon, enjoy a walking tour of Princes Street and New Town. Dating from the late 18th to early 19th centuries, New Town is home to elegant Charlotte Square; Georgian streets and crescents; and Queen Street, where the National Portrait Gallery is located. This evening, gather for dinner at the hotel. Saturday, July 28 Today is a day of exploration in the Old Town. Join a guided walk along the Royal Mile. At Edinburgh Castle, we will see the Crown Jewels of Scotland and tour sections not open to the general public. After lunch, visit the masterfully restored National Museum of Scotland, with exhibits on Scottish history, art, and science. The balance of the afternoon is unscheduled. You may wish to stroll in the area of Grassmarket with its intriguing antique shops. The evening is at leisure. Sunday, July 29 Explore this walkable city on your own in the morning. Then at lunch in the Balmoral Hotel, join travelers from the main program.

7 T ERMS & C ONDITIONS AIRFARE Academic Arrangements Abroad (AAA) will be pleased to assist with air travel arrangements. A specially negotiated APEX Economy Class non-refundable group airfare will be offered. Business Class will be quoted on an individual basis. A fee of $75 per person will be charged for any reservations other than the group flight schedule; private transfers can be arranged at a supplemental cost. To redeem your frequent flyer mileage, please contact the airline directly. Please note that AAA can only assist in rebooking flights on those air reservations booked directly by AAA. PAYMENT SCHEDULE A deposit of $2,500 per person, payable to Academic Arrangements Abroad, of which $350 is non-refundable for administrative fees, is required with the reservation application. Final payment, by check only, must be received 120 days prior to departure. HEALTH All participants must be in good health. This program involves extensive walking over uneven surfaces and climbing stairs at monuments and other locations not handicapped accessible and getting in and out of various conveyances. RESPONSIBILITY CLAUSE The participation of the Met is limited to educational sponsorship of the program described in this brochure (The Program). AAA acts only as an agent for the participant with respect to transportation, accommodations, and all other services, relating to The Program. AAA, the Met, and/or their agents assume no responsibility or liability for any act, error, or omission, or for any injury, loss, accident, delay, or irregularity which may be occasioned by reason of any defect in any aircraft, ship, train, bus, or other carrier, or through neglect or default of any subcontractor or other third party, which may be used wholly or in part in the performance of their duty to the participants of The Program. The passage ticket issued by the carrier is the sole contract between the participant and the carrier. Nor will AAA or the Met and/or their agents be responsible for loss, injury, damages, or expenses to persons or property, due to illness, weather, strikes, local laws, hostilities, wars, terrorist acts, acts of nature, or other such causes in connection with The Program or anything beyond their reasonable control. AAA is not responsible for transportation or other program delays and changes, nor additional expenses or loss of time that may be incurred. In the event it becomes necessary or advisable for the comfort or well-being of the participants, or for any reason whatsoever, to alter the itinerary at any time, without notice to the participants, such alterations will be made without penalty to AAA or the Met. Additional expenses, if any, shall be borne by the participants. Baggage and personal effects are the sole responsibility of the participant at all times. The Met and AAA reserve the right to accept or decline any person as a participant at any time, or to require any participant to withdraw from The Program at their own expense when such an action is determined by AAA or the Met to be in the best interest of the participant s health and safety, or the general welfare of the other participants. CANCELLATION POLICY AAA must strictly adhere to its cancellation policy to offset costs incurred prior to the commencement of The Program, which may include but are not limited to: advance payments to land operators; ship charters; communication expenses; development/promotional expenses; and the loss of time that might have permitted resale of reserved space. All cancellations must be made in writing to the offices of AAA and are subject to a $350 non-refundable administrative fee. All refunds are limited to amounts actually received by AAA and are the sole responsibility of AAA; the Met shall have no liability for refunds. At the time AAA receives written notification of cancellation, the following cancellation charges will apply: cancellations received between 120 and 91 days prior to departure, 20 percent of the program cost per person; those received between 90 and 61 days before departure, 50 percent of the program cost per person; no refunds will be given for cancellations received within 60 days of departure. No refunds are given for cancellation on or after the day of departure, or for unused portions of the tour, for any reason. Air cancellation charges, if any, will be assessed in accordance with airline regulations. All group fare tickets must be issued no less than 30 days prior to departure. NOTE: Neither AAA nor the Met shall be liable for any airline cancellation penalties incurred by the purchase of a non-refundable ticket. In the case of a cancellation due to shortage of participants, AAA will attempt to notify all participants at least 45 days prior to departure. However, AAA reserves the right to cancel The Program prior to departure for any reason and, in such case, reimbursement of refundable costs of the trip by AAA shall constitute full settlement with the participant. In the unlikely event that a dispute arises between a participant and AAA or the Met, the following conditions will apply: (a) the dispute will be settled by binding arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association in New York, NY; (b) the dispute will be governed by New York Law; (c) the maximum amount of recovery to which a participant shall be entitled under any and all circumstances will be the sum of all monies actually received from the participant by AAA. The participant agrees that this is a fair and reasonable limitation on the damages, of any sort whatsoever, that a participant may suffer.
