Her castles and cathedrals bring history to life; her luxuriant gardens delight. Next summer, please join us on privileged visits to England and Wales, as we uncover the hidden side of the United Kingdom. We are pleased that Elizabeth Cleland, Associate Curator in the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts at the Metropolitan Museum, will be leading this program. Dr. Cleland has a particular expertise in European textiles that will greatly enhance our enjoyment of the many fine tapestries we will see. TRAVELING WITH YOU Elizabeth Cleland has worked at the Met since As Associate Curator in the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts, she is responsible for tapestries, enamels, and northern European glass. Most recently, she was lead curator of the major loan exhibition Grand Design: Pieter Coecke van Aelst and Renaissance Tapestry (MMA ). In 2010, she co-edited with Thomas P. Campbell Tapestry in the Baroque: New Aspects of Production and Patronage (Yale, MMA). Elizabeth lectures and teaches regularly, and has published widely on fifteenth-, sixteenth-, and seventeenth-century tapestries; she has also contributed to exhibition catalogues (Tapestry in the Baroque; Rogier van der Weyden ; Gothic: Art for England; Tapestry in the Renaissance) ) and to collections catalogues of British, American, and Canadian museums. She undertook her undergraduate and postgraduate studies (the latter as an Arts and Humanities Research Council scholar) at the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London. Sincerely, Emily K. LONDON, ENGLAND Monday, July 13 Arrive in London and transfer to the sophisticated St. James Court Hotel. An afternoon visit is planned to the Chelsea Physic Garden, the oldest botanic garden in London. Its unique, walled location along the Thames creates a warmer microclimate for its wide variety of native and non-native plants. Gather this evening for welcome remarks followed by dinner at the hotel. LONDON CARDIFF, WALES Tuesday, July 14 Travel to Cardiff, the capital city of Wales marks the 800th anniversary of the sealing of Magna Carta, and we will stop en route at Salisbury Cathedral to view what is considered to be the best preserved of the four original copies. Continue to Bath, a popular spa town during the Georgian Era and a World Heritage site. After lunch at leisure, tour the well-preserved Roman Baths Museum and see nearby Bath Abbey. Then drive across the River Severn into Wales. Accommodations are at the St. David s Hotel and Spa for the next three nights. Dinner is at the hotel. CARDIFF Wednesday, July 15 Paul McCoubrie Ceiling of the Arab room, Cardiff Castle Begin the day with a behind-the-scenes tour of Senedd, the seat of government for Wales, where we hope to meet with a Member of the National Assembly. Then enjoy a light lunch at the famous Madame Fromage specialty shop in the historic Victorian-era Castle Arcade. Explore over 2,000 years of history on a curatorial tour of Cardiff Castle before relaxing with afternoon refreshments at Pettigrew Tea Rooms, in the former cottage of the castle s gatekeeper. At the nearby National Museum Cardiff, an after-hours curatorial tour of one of the great British art collections of the 20th century has been arranged. View Renoir s famous La Parisienne, Monet s Rouen Cathedral, Rodin s The Kiss, and works by Manet and Pissarro. Following a private reception at the museum, the evening is at leisure. TINTERN, WALES Thursday, July 16 Depart for the southern end of the Wye Valley to Tintern, best known for the ruins of Tintern Abbey, beloved by writers and artists including William Wordsworth and William Turner. Following lunch, return to Cardiff and visit St. Fagan s National History Museum, an open-air museum on the grounds of St. Fagan s Castle, where we will see an exclusive demonstration of traditional Welsh folk music instruments. 4 CARDIFF ISLE OF ANGLESEY, WALES Friday, July 17 Depart early this morning for Hereford, located on the River Wye in England. On a tour of Hereford Cathedral, view the Mappa Mundi,, a medieval map of the world dating from the 13th century and the largest medieval map known to still exist. The finest surviving 1217 Magna Carta the significant revision of the original 1215 charter is also housed here. Return to Wales for a guided tour of Welshpool s 12th-century Powis Castle, renowned for its lavishly furnished rooms, extraordinary art collection, and beautifully terraced garden. Dinner and accommodations are at Tre-Ysgawen Hall located in the heart of the picturesque Isle of Anglesey in North Wales. PORTMEIRION SNOWDONIA, WALES Saturday, July 18 Enjoy a morning tour of Portmeirion. The vision of eccentric architect Clough Williams-Ellis, this model village has beautiful gardens and scenic bay views. Lunch is at leisure before continuing to Porthmadog to board the famous Welsh Highland Railway. Travel through the breathtaking mountain scenery of Snowdonia National Park and disembark in the royal town of Caernarfon. Dine on fresh local produce and delicacies tonight in Beaumaris at the Loft Restaurant, one of the finest in Wales. Penrhyn Castle CONWY VALLEY, WALES Sunday, July 19 Spend the day in beautiful Conwy Valley to visit Bodnant Garden, recognized as one of the finest Edwardian naturalistic gardens in the world, and see the famous Laburnum Arch, a curved walk covered with a cascade of yellow flowers. Then tour Bodnant Welsh Food Centre located on Furnace Farm. A tasting of freshly made cheese and Welsh wine is followed by a cooking demonstration and lunch. This afternoon explore the 13th-century, UNESCO World Heritage site Conwy Castle on a guided tour, and see Plas Mawr, considered Britain s finest surviving Elizabethan town house. The evening is at leisure. stephenmeese Countryside near Snowdonia E NGLAND & W ALES ISLE OF ANGLESEY MANCHESTER, ENGLAND Monday, July 20 Begin the day with a curatorial tour of the dramatic neo- Norman Penrhyn Castle, housing one of the finest art collections in North Wales. After lunch in Hawarden, visit Gladstone s Library, the largest residential library in Britain. Continue to Hawarden Castle, the estate of former British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone, where we hope to meet with a member of the Gladstone family. Arrive in Manchester and check in at The Lowry Hotel, located in the heart of the city. Dinner is at leisure.

5 DERBYSHIRE, ENGLAND Tuesday, July 21 On a full-day excursion to scenic Derbyshire, enjoy a guided visit of Chatsworth House, seat of the Duke of Devonshire and home to one of the largest private art collections in Britain. After lunch here, there will be time to explore the house and acres of gardens including its yew maze and delightful fountains. Then, in the heart of the beautiful Peak District National Park, tour romantic Haddon Hall and its Elizabethan terraced gardens overlooking the River Wye. Return to Manchester for an evening at leisure. MANCHESTER NEW YORK Thursday, July 23 Transfer to Manchester Airport for the return flights home. LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND Wednesday, July 22 Drive to Liverpool, a designated UNESCO World Heritage site and birthplace of The Beatles. See its two architecturally diverse cathedrals: Liverpool Cathedral, the longest in the world, and the modern Metropolitan Cathedral. Continue to the Albert Dock area, one of Britain s top heritage attractions, for lunch and the afternoon at leisure. You may wish to spend the afternoon at Tate Liverpool, The Beatles Story exhibition, or the Merseyside Maritime Museum. Return to Manchester for our farewell dinner. 7 T ERMS & C ONDITIONS AIRFARE Academic Arrangements Abroad (AAA) will be pleased to assist with air travel arrangements for this program, including specially negotiated group airfare when available, suggested group flights, or your own individual requests, for a processing fee of $40 per person. Complete details will be provided in your confirmation mailing. PAYMENT SCHEDULE A deposit of $2,000 per person, payable to Academic Arrangements Abroad, of which $350 is non-refundable for administrative fees, is required with the reservation application. Final payment, by check only, must be received 120 days prior to departure. HEALTH All participants must be in good health. This program involves extensive walking over uneven surfaces and climbing stairs at monuments and other locations not handicapped accessible, and climbing in and out of various conveyances. Any condition that may require assistance or special medical attention must be reported at the time of your reservation. PHOTOGRAPHY Photographs or, in some cases, videotapes of participants of Travel With the Met trips may be used for educational and promotional purposes by The Metropolitan Museum of Art. INSURANCE TRIP CANCELLATION / EMERGENCY MEDICAL EVACUATION / BAGGAGE / ACCIDENT AND SICKNESS INSURANCE IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. CANCELLATION PENALTIES ARE STRICTLY ENFORCED. CHANGES IN ITINERARY & COSTS The itinerary is subject to change at the discretion of The Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met) and AAA. All prices quoted are based on prevailing fuel prices, airfares and currency exchange rates in effect as of the time of brochure printing and are subject to change without notice. Deviations from the scheduled itinerary are at the expense of the individual. RESPONSIBILITY CLAUSE The participation of The Met is limited to educational sponsorship of the program described in this brochure (The Program). AAA acts only as an agent for the participant with respect to transportation, accommodations and all other services, relating to The Program. AAA, the Met and/or their agents assume no responsibility or liability for any act, error or omission, or for any injury, loss, accident, delay or irregularity which may be occasioned by reason of any defect in any aircraft, ship, train, bus or other carrier, or through neglect or default of any subcontractor or other third party, which may be used wholly or in part in the performance of their duty to the participants of The Program. The passage ticket issued by the carrier is the sole contract between the participant and the carrier. Nor will AAA or the Met and/or their agents be responsible for loss, injury, damages or expenses to persons or property, due to illness, weather, strikes, local laws, hostilities, wars, terrorist acts, acts of nature or other such causes in connection with The Program or anything beyond their reasonable control. AAA is not responsible for transportation or other program delays and changes, nor additional expenses or loss of time that may be incurred. In the event it becomes necessary or advisable for the comfort or wellbeing of the participants, or for any reason whatsoever, to alter the itinerary at any time, without notice to the participants, such alterations will be made without penalty to AAA or the Met. Additional expenses, if any, shall be borne by the participants. Baggage and personal effects are the sole responsibility of the participant at all times. The Met and AAA reserve the right to accept or decline any person as a participant at any time, or to require any participant to withdraw from The Program at their own expense when such an action is determined by AAA or the Met to be in the best interest of the participant s health and safety, or the general welfare of the other participants. CANCELLATION POLICY AAA must strictly adhere to its cancellation policy to offset costs incurred prior to the commencement of The Program, which may include but are not limited to: advance payments to land operators; ship charters; communication expenses; development/promotional expenses and the loss of time that might have permitted resale of reserved space. All cancellations must be made in writing to the offices of AAA and are subject to a $350 non-refundable administrative fee. All refunds are limited to amounts actually received by AAA and are the sole responsibility of AAA; the Met shall have no liability for refunds. At the time AAA receives written notification of cancellation, the following cancellation charges will apply: cancellations received between 120 to 91 days prior to departure, 20 percent of the program cost per person; 90 and 61 days prior to departure, 50 percent of the program cost per person; no refunds will be given for cancellations received within 60 days of departure. No refunds are given for cancellation on or after the day of departure, or for unused portions of the tour, for any reason. Air cancellation charges, if any, will be assessed in accordance with airline regulations. All group fare tickets must be issued no less than 30 days prior to departure. NOTE: Neither AAA nor the Met shall be liable for any airline cancellation penalties incurred by the purchase of a non-refundable ticket. In the case of a cancellation due to shortage of participants, AAA will attempt to notify all participants at least 45 days prior to departure. However, AAA reserves the right to cancel The Program prior to departure for any reason and, in such case, reimbursement of refundable costs of the trip by AAA shall constitute full settlement with the participant. In the unlikely event that a dispute arises between a participant and AAA or the Met, the following conditions will apply: (a) the dispute will be settled by binding arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association in New York, NY; (b) the dispute will be governed by New York Law; (c) the maximum amount of recovery to which a participant shall be entitled under any and all circumstances will be the sum of all monies actually received from the participant by AAA. The participant agrees that this is a fair and reasonable limitation on the damages, of any sort whatsoever, that a participant may suffer.
