Notes from the Editor We have had a busy calendar this past two months, culminating in the WWI commemorations which saw a packed village hall. The hall was also the venue for other meet-ups including life saving skills, harvest lunch, AGMs and Maypole s 25 th birthday party. Thank you to everyone for their time and energy organising these events. The church coffee morning is this Saturday that definitely means Christmas is just around the corner. One of my favourite parts of Christmas is Carols in the Pub, when Mark and Lisa play host while Rachel and Victor accompany our spirited singing. If you can t make that, there s usually a packed house and joyous atmosphere at the Crib Service on Christmas Eve - when Ann is looking for some junior helpers to play parts in the nativity. Wishing you a happy and healthy new year, Tish Latest Village News & Events Check for updates on New editor: Duncan_Horrocks@yahoo.co.uk The ECHO is produced for the villagers of Badingham by the Badingham Community Council Registered Charity No The Editor s decision on whether or where to place material is final. 4 BADINGHAM It seems this year has gone particularly quickly a cold start to 2018, a short spring and a long, hot summer may be why 2018 seems to have passed so fast. Maybe 2019 will follow this pattern! On Wednesday 3 rd October, Leighton Page of Fram First Responders, gave us a very thorough demonstration of life saving skills. It was a very well-attended evening and we hope you had all your questions answered about using the defibrillator. On Thursday Nov 1 st the BCC held its AGM. All the committee were happy to stand for re-election and were thanked for their work during the past year. This AGM was attended by only a few residents, so thank you to those who came along and supported us. Special thanks to those who made suggestions for future activities and events in Badingham. It was agreed that an Open Meeting should be arranged for residents and friends to come and share their views, ideas and offers of help for future events. The meeting was arranged for Thursday 7 th March, at the Village Hall, 7.30pm. Put the date in your diary and please come along. On Nov 11 th, the BCC joined with the Parish Council in organising a Hog Roast for Badingham residents to commemorate the centenary of the end of WWI. It was great to see such a big crowd, of all ages, gather in the Village Hall. Thank you all for coming along. The BCC wish all residents, their families, friends a Happy Christmas and New Year. 8 Badingham Village Hall Low Street, Badingham, IP13 8JS Registered Charity no Badingham Village Hall AGM took place in October and was well attended by members of the community. It was a great pleasure to welcome so many friends and supporters of the village hall and to give a warm welcome to new residents. The Management Committee, elected at the previous AGM in 2017, has settled in respective roles and we are focused on working as a united committee. Thanks to this committed and hard working committee a great deal of work was completed during Much of committee time has been taken up with the day to day running of the hall, maintenance and complying with regulatory and safety requirements. During the past year particularly, there have been behind the scenes time consuming but necessary activities to make sure the village hall has all the necessary governance, policies and operational procedures in place. We conducted a review of all aspects of our own village hall and research into other village halls and pre-school establishments based in village halls. In terms of financial matters we have been in a steady, sound state throughout the past year with operating income remaining at a similar level to the previous year. The hall is in use on a regular basis by several user groups as well as Badingham Parish Council and Badingham Community Council. The hall was used for some private functions during the year. The AGM is aimed to inform residents of the village hall and management committee activities and finances and to elect committee members for the coming year. An essential part is given over to the community so that questions and comments can be made on the annual report and other relevant matters. This year s AGM did not disappoint and a number of questions and positive comments were raised by residents which members of the Committee were pleased to respond to. 8

The Committee agreed to stand again and the following members were appointed: Debbie Horrocks, Joyce Probert, Suzie Newman elected by the community Shirley Osborne appointee from Badingham Parish Council Matt Lunn user representative from Badingham Playschool The Committee is committed to continue to manage and run the hall effectively. We will follow a consistent approach to ensure the hall is kept available for the good of all the community in Badingham adhering to the principle that a village hall is a facility for use by the whole community for a variety of purposes Thanks Badingham Village Hall Management Committee would like to sincerely thank Sonja Russell for her kind donation to village hall funds and Ian and Margot Wolstenholme for their time in organising a quiz night which raised 92 for the village hall. These actions in support of the village hall are very much appreciated. Village Hall Activities Badingham Village Hall Management Committee welcome all ideas and suggestions for activities and events that could take place in the village hall. We will do everything possible to support the development of activities across all sections of the community. Please find the time to complete the questionnaire enclosed in this edition of the Echo as this will help the Committee to support activities that residents would like in Badingham. 12 BADINGHAM NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH Sonja Russell, Head Co-Ordinator Tel: The first week in October was hectic, with two burglaries, a suspicious white van and possible illegal rave followed, a week later, by another burglary. CRIME REF 110/50/10 covers all of the following 1. New Transit reg no. BL16 OGV selling garden furniture etc. Driven by men of Mediterranean origin, called at a house on Badingham Road, Laxfield. 2. Burglary two days later, a burglary at a cottage in Badingham Road, Laxfield. The garage was entered and a cordless drill and hand tools were taken. The owner of the property went after the burglar, who dropped the drill. He was driving a small white Mercedes van reg no. KV52 LHW 3. Bruisyard Wood an illegal rave was to have taken place on the night of Friday 5th October stopped when reported by the owner. We think the above two vehicles may be connected. I have asked the police to look into this further. BURGLARY - BADINGHAM Around 8th 14th October a burglary in Mill Road. Radiators, Posts etc stolen. I have no reference number for this, but it would be helpful if the owner of the property gave me her full name and address and phone number so that i can get back to her for more details. Thank you. 12 RENDHAM TRAILER STOLEN On 15 th October in Bruisyard Road, a 12 Ifor Williams trailer was stolen. Serial no If anybody might know of the of the above, please contact the police on 101. LAXFIELD CAR STOLEN On 5 th November thieves entered a house on High Street and took a set of car keys from on top of a cupboard. A silver Audi A6 HF52 TMX was stolen from outside. Crime ref TWO BURGLARIES Two incidents on Sunday 11 November. A home in Kenton Road, Bedingfield was entered by using a concrete garden ornament to force open the lower half of a stable door. Watches, cuff links, a metal torch and a Karcher window cleaner were stolen ( ). Between 7.30pm and 8pm, three thieves at a property in Earl Soham gained entry by using a flower pot to smash rear patio doors. An untidy search of the property was made ( ). OPERATION RINGTONE The police continue to target drivers who text and talk behind the wheel. Officers use marked and unmarked cars and motorcycles. In one week in January, 122 people were caught. Offenders now receive a 200 fine and six penalty points. For someone who has had a licence less than two years, it would revert back to a provisional one.

NOTTINGHAM KNOCKERS We have had people calling door-todoor in the village. They claim to belong to a rehabilitation scheme, selling household items at your door, but it is a con there is no such scheme. Please warn your neighbours, particularly the elderly and vulnerable, not to open their door to strangers or buy on the doorstep. Some callers may offer poor quality goods at inflated prices but others may be gathering information for future crime. Please keep in mind that if cold callers don t get any sales in an area, they are less likely to return. COWBOY GARDENERS Police advice is never to buy or agree to services at your door. They are currently looking for two men (white, in their 40s with local accents, who were driving a black pickup) who tried to swindle an Ipswich resident. They offered garden services and were paid 80 but then asked for a cheque for a further fortunately the cheque was cancelled before it was cashed. Crime Reference 37/51261/18. We urge you to report such individuals to Suffolk Trading Standards or Suffolk Police 101 and let me know, so we can spread the word. PENSION SCAMS Recently highlighted by the BBC - victims have lost on average of 91,000 each. The scam starts with an unexpected call or , offering free advice on pension savings a way to protect your money for your children, or access it sooner. They play on people s anxieties and offer too good to be true investments where your money will be transferred into a high risk scheme or simply stolen. If you get cold-called or approached out of the blue, ignore it. Check who you are dealing with contact the FCA to see if the firm is genuine. Speak to an adviser for unbiased advice. Never be rushed into agreeing a pension transfer. DVLA SCAM Have you received an supposedly from DVLA about an overpayment with limited time to reply? This is yet another scam. Following the link will take you to a fake version of the DVLA website and will attempt to gather your personal and financial details. Report instances to Action Fraud by calling BT SCAM Similarly, a caller claims to be from BT and threatens to cut off your phone if you don t make immediate payment. Do not engage with these callers. People aren t always who they say they are - so take time to stop, think and check. FINALLY NHW has never been more relevant or more necessary than in Badingham these days. Our communities, both real and virtual, rely more than ever on a closer relationship between the public and the police and this wonderful organisation does more than most to share the messages that keep us safe. With Christmas drawing close, just be careful and aware of anything suspicious in the area. Look after your shopping and keep presents away from prying eyes. All of you, have a great Christmas and Happy New Year. Best wishes Sonja and Coordinators 13

ANNOUNCEMENTS Huge thanks to BPC and BCC and everyone else who made the Centenary commemorations so special in our village. The hog roast was delicious and great that the village hall was packed to the rafters! The beacon lighting was both spectacular and moving, a fitting way to end such an important day. Thank you Badingham. Karen Interested in new activities in the Village Hall? You will find a small survey with your Echo compiled by Fit Villages, Suffolk. It s a great opportunity for the community to have their say about what activities they would like to see in our Village Hall. So do find a moment to fill it in and post it back by 10th December - no stamp required. Alternatively, it may be completed online. See web address on the form. Fit Villages operate with the help of a Lottery grant. They have given significant financial support to get the monthly Kurling up and running and are willing to offer the same support to any new venture that may come to light via the survey. This is a great opportunity not to be missed. Framlingham Ladies Choir Christmas Concert Friday 14 December 2018 St Clares Church, Framlingham at 7.30pm 14

We are planning ahead so please save the date! We are organising a litter pick in and around our beautiful village on Details to follow in the next edition of the Echo but it would be great if as many people as possible could join in. We will be rewarded for our efforts with bacon sarnies (vegetarian option also available) and hot beverages in the village hall - kindly funded by our Badingham Community Council Wynne and Peter Willey would like to announce the birth of their first grandchild. Their daughter Helen had a beautiful baby girl on October 22nd, weighing 7pounds. Emilia Sian Campey is a joy and we love her so much. Helen and James are fantastic parents and we are looking forward to being equally good grandparents. We are all excited about her first visit to Badingham Whist Drive We re holding a Whist Drive to raise money for Parkinson s UK on Monday 18th February at 2pm at Badingham White Horse, with thanks to Lisa & Mark Tickets 5 includes Afternoon Tea Call Rita

100 Years of Remembrance Muffled bells called us together and we stood in silence around the war memorial at 11am on the 100 th anniversary of the Armistice. Victor read out the names of those brave villagers who didn t return from their wartime service. Later we joined together in gratitude of peace. The Village Hall was decorated with flags and bunting and was full to the seams with villagers of all ages. What a marvellous way to give thanks to those men whose homecoming fund had paid for the hall to be a permanent place for the people of Badingham to gather together. Under a dark, star-lit sky we walked from the hall to the church to stand once again around the memorial where Malcolm recited the verse For the Fallen: They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old... and did a fine portrayal of a town crier with the Cry for Peace. We quietly sang the National Anthem and held our breath as two brave souls stood atop the church tower to light our beacon as once more the bells pealed, joining others across the country and Commonwealth. Thanks to all who put their energies into organising this event. It was tremendous that so many joined in, giving thanks that our worries are so minor in comparison to the hardships faced by our grandparents. I expect we all know of relatives who didn t make it home. Grandad told me of the mud, the rats and the lice of the trenches but it is unimaginable what else he witnessed. As a Badingham boy of 18, my grandad and his cousin went to Woodbridge to join up. They joined the 1/4 th Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment, a territorial force who patrolled the coast of Suffolk and Norfolk but later theyfound themselves on the battlefields of France. Grandad s 20 year old cousin was never to return home. He remains in an unmarked grave on the Somme, remembered on the Thiepval memorial. Do you have stories to tell and people who should be remembered? 16

NEWS FROM DENNINGTON SCHOOL Dennington Primary School officially joined the All Saints Trust on 1 st September We will now be known as Dennington Church of England Primary School (we have dropped the VC, which stood for Voluntary-Controlled). After a thorough consultation and closely considering the views of parents, staff and stakeholders, the Governors have come to the view that joining this newly formed, local Multi Academy Trust will strengthen an existing local partnership for the benefits of all our pupils. The other schools already in the MAT are Laxfield, Fressingfield, Eye, Stradbroke and Wortham primary schools. Our interim Headteacher Mr Ian Page has handed over the headship to Dr Paul Parslow-Williams, known as Mr Williams to the children. Dr Parslow- Williams has been the Headteacher at Occold Primary and will now become the Executive Headteacher for Charsfield, Dennington and Occold primary schools. We had 13 reception children start with us on 6 th September, who are all settling in well. This brings the current roll to 61 children. ========================================================= People are asking what Save Playschool is all about. This plea relates to an entry in the Aviva Community Fund to secure up to 25,000 to fund heating and power for new premises, which Playschool hopes to rent in Dennington. The application says that Playschool is facing increasing pressure to move before the end of 2019 to free up their current premises the Village Hall. Indeed, after several months notice, Playschool was asked to share the hall for three hours on a Tuesday afternoon, twice a month. There are plans to increase this to 3 hours every week from September In just my time editing the Echo, the Playschool has increased from 3 days a week, to 4 days and now runs 5 days a week between 8.30 and Their expansion has meant the hall was not available for any other villagers daytime during the week. As I understand it, when it was suggested that Playschool might be able to move to the Pocket Park the Parish Council found the site could not allow that change of use. Playschool also asked if they could move to a portacabin on the edge of Dennington s playing field. When this was vetoed, Robert Rous suggested he convert one of his redundant buildings for them to rent. Playschool is now holding fundraising events to save money for the conversion and move. Recently they raised 2580 with a Psychic Evening. 17

Jim, who owns a small farm in Suffolk, was behind his two furrow plough, pulled by his two horses, Captain and Honey. As he turned the heavy clay earth, peewits, gulls and wagtails joined him in a search for worms. Jim was careful no clods fell on the birds; he would have to remove them, if they were caught. His son Sam is two fields away on his tractor. He leans back in his seat and thinks I have two more headlands to go. Both in their minds know the ploughing has to be done before Christmas. The snow fell, the sun came up - not as red as some other mornings, but out of the mist the day was fine. For once it was Christmas Weather in Christmas week. Jim and Sam had finished their ploughing; very cold air with sparkling half sun and a layer of snow. Jim is reminded of Christmas by the old holly tree with clusters of beautiful red berries. It beckons him, like a beacon, from his hedge where it has shone like a friendly light for so many ploughmen over past winters. Without fail, each Christmas Eve Jim s family would take a branch of holly from the tree to All Saints Church, near where they lived. Part of Jim s seasonal traditions was to polish both the brass potty (yes, one of those) and the breast of his plough and put them under his bed on Christmas Eve... In those days, every good farmer on heavy land was supposed to do this, believe it or not. A break at Christmas brings a brief season of happiness and enjoyment to farmers, who work so hard over the year. May you all enjoy a Happy Christmas and spare a thought for Jim, Sam and all our farmers. Sonja 18

Why not join us in the new year on Sunday 20th January 2019 for our Gather Together service at 10am at Badingham Church The service lasts about 30 mins, is suitable for all ages and is followed by refreshments You will receive a very warm welcome Harvest Festival and Harvest Lunch A lovely Harvest Thanksgiving service was followed by a delicious lunch in the village hall. After lunch Ben Newton, our guest speaker, showed us pictures and told us about his experiences on his trip to Poland. We had a very enjoyable day - thank you to everyone who helped with decorating the church, food, clearing up afterwards or in any other way and thank you everyone who came along. Our harvest gifts were taken to The Salvation Army at Woodbridge to be used to provide meals in their cafe there and the lunch raised 374 for church funds of which 10% was sent to Cancer Research. Ann Farming Calendar Now the fields have returned to green and brown, harvest seems a distant past. Some crops have been sold, others are in storage, hoping for better prices later in the season. We had an extra crop this year straw. Farmers were encouraged to bale their straw to help upland livestock farmers who had been hit by the long, hard winter. In other years, most of the straw is ploughed back into the land; being good for the soil. This year we were pleased to hear large trailer loads of Badingham straw had gone to North Wales. The Keeble girls from Blaxhall are amongst the team driving the balers and low loaders during their holidays. Mum, my sister-in-law and myself do our bit corn carting and unloading trailers but we definitely don t have their skills. Girl power! 19

Dr Dan Poulter MP Member of Parliament for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich The run-up to Christmas is undoubtedly one of the busiest times of the year not only preparing for Christmas at home, but also out and about attending the many Christmas community events and fares. One of the best things about Suffolk is our fantastic community spirit and with many events and lunches put on specially to ensure that no-one in the community is left out or lonely, I would like to personally thank each and every one of our volunteers who work selflessly at Christmas and throughout the year. When visiting the many Christmas events and fayres, I very much enjoy taking the time to browse and buy locally where I can. We have such a fantastic range of small and independent retailers here in Suffolk, not to mention farm shops and local producers, so it s very important that we do our best to support our local economy. As many of us get into the party spirit, we must also remember those in our NHS and emergency services who work around the clock to keep people safe and cared for. This year, I am looking forward to going out on a night shift with the Police here in Suffolk, to see for myself the challenges that they face on a daily basis. I will also be spending some of my Christmas break working as a doctor in the NHS, looking after those who are vulnerable. The Christmas period is one of the busiest times of year for our NHS and emergency services, with staff working around the clock to ensure help is at hand when needed. Of course it s not just those working in hospitals who work on Christmas Day, the list is endless but so many work right across the festive season to ensure that services continue day and night carers visiting the elderly and vulnerable in our communities, ambulance staff and paramedics, firefighters and police officers, to name but a few. Then there is the army of hard working public sector staff, working behind the scenes, to keep everything running smoothly. Collectively they ensure that our communities are safe and functioning over the festive period, while we all enjoy ourselves with friends and family. This Christmas, please spare a thought for all those working tirelessly on our behalf, often in challenging circumstances, yet remaining committed to delivering services compassionately and professionally, despite knowing their families and loved ones are waiting at home to enjoy Christmas with them after a lengthy shift. I would therefore like to pay special tribute to all of our dedicated and hardworking workforce here in Suffolk, thank you for all you do at Christmas, and all year round. May I wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas. For advice call or daniel.poulter.mp@parliament.uk 20
