Notes from the Editor Fancy giving kurling a try? Come along on Tuesday 10 th April. Beetle Drive is another game, suitable for all ages, which is returning to the Village Hall. Huge thanks to Carl who, after 6 ½ years, is passing on the helm of the Badingham website to Duncan. In recent weeks Carl has spent an enormous amount of time upgrading the website so it is mobile-friendly. Take a look at Badingham.org.uk. Nextdoor Badingham now has 101 members with villagers sharing news on crime, road closures, local services and events. Get in touch with Duncan if you would like to join: duncan_horrocks@yahoo.co.uk If you would like to get more involved in community events, come along to the Open Evening for the Summer Fete on 19 th April. All offers of help big or small is greatly appreciated. Volunteers have been going above and beyond in support of community spirit during the recent cold snap. The drifting snow could easily have meant parts of the village would be cut off for days on end if people hadn t been prepared to go out in the freezing conditions to clear the snow drifts and shop for neighbours. A big pat on the back to all involved. Best wishes, Tish Latest Village News & Events Check for updates on All the latest news will be posted here: editor@badingham.org.uk The ECHO is produced for the villagers of Badingham by the Badingham Community Council Registered Charity No The Editor s decision on whether or where to place material is final. While every effort is made to check information published, the BCC does not endorse the accuracy or reliability of any article or advert within the magazine. E.O.E. 3

BADINGHAM The Beast from the East and Storm Emma seem somewhat of a distant memory now so hope everyone survived the snow and wind and managed to keep warm. The March Quiz was for the BCC funds - I think the weather and coughs and colds kept attendance down but 54 was raised so thank you to everyone who turned out that evening. At a recent BCC committee meeting the Village Fete was discussed - a proposed date of Saturday June 16th had already been set. The committee is now a very small group of people and we feel more help is needed if the Fete is to be run successfully. There is to be an OPEN MEETING on Thursday April 19th at 7.30 in the Village Hall to discuss the fete. If you would like the fete to go ahead on June 16th and are willing to help please come along. Looking forward to seeing you there, Pauline Badingham Community Council Committee Sonja Russell - President & Secretary Rita Ruffles - Vice President Pauline Skevington - Chairman Gerry Newman - Treasurer Other committee members: Wynne Willey, Jackie Price, Tish King Write to us c/o our Secretary, Sonja Russell at Colston Bungalow, Badingham, Woodbridge, Suffolk, IP13 8LB Our committee is a friendly bunch and would love it if you would like to join us. 12 BADINGHAM NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH Sonja Russell, Head Co-Ordinator Tel: What a cold welcome back from our annual holiday in Goa. From temperatures of 33c we are slowly adjusting to -6c or more. At least this will keep the bogus callers away. POWER TOOLS STOLEN News just in of a burglary from a garage in Badingham on Monday 12 th March. Power tools were stolen and there was an attempt to break in to the car on the driveway. This follows a similar incident in Cransford on Thursday 8 th March. On the night of Sunday 4 th March, outbuildings at six properties in Brandeston were targeted. Police are asking residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious persons or vehicles particularly in the early hours. Call 101 or Crimestoppers on , if you prefer to pass on information anonymously. Power tools, strimmers, chainsaws and hedge trimmers are amongst the items stolen. In most cases, entry was forced. Please review the security of your outbuildings and mark valuable pieces of equipment by etching your postcode on them. Taking a note of the serial number and model and using an ultraviolet pen to invisibly mark your tools increases the chances of having them returned. If you are offered tools in suspicious circumstances, please do not buy them and let the police know immediately via 101. LIVE MUSIC I ve received reports of very loud live music being played. Please, if anyone is having a party, you should notify your neighbours. If not, it can be reported as anti-social behaviour. BOGUS CALLERS Please DO NOT buy from these - they do not need encouraging. Don t believe half they tell you, your safety and that of others come first. Never keep large sums of money in the house and keep your purse out of sight not near the door. 12

DRUG DRIVING Drug Driving is becoming a problem in Suffolk. One in four motorists tested by Drugalyser roadside testing kits had drugs in their system. Between April and December 2017, 49 were caught each month after being involved in accidents. The main core are in their 20s / 30s with cannabis and cocaine in their systems. The same is happening in Goa but sentencing is far more severe - if you have taken or are carrying drugs, it s off to prison for 10 years. ROGUE TRADER Cold caller Matt Cohen of Crest Driveway Solutions (formerly MC Driveways) claims his firm had been approved by the Federation of Master Builders. He seems very affable and obliging but his workmanship is appalling. Cohen has ripped off people by 10,000s. If approached contact Trading Standards ( or tradingstandards@suffolk.gov.uk) or phone Police 101. Please DO NOT let anyone carry out work on your house until you get a second opinion or you know who they are. Never keep large sums of money in the house and keep your purse out of sight not near the door. WHAT IS FRAUD? Fraud is when somebody lies or deceives you in order to cause harm, usually by stealing your money. WHAT IS CYBER CRIME? This is when fraudsters target computers, phones or the internet to swindle you. Our increased use of electronic devices for everyday activities mean cyber criminals have a wealth of opportunity to commit crime. NEXT ECHO WHAT IS ACTION FRAUD? Sonja 13

Victoria Beer House by Victor Warne Water,Water everywhere and not a drop to drink.... so goes the song by Tommy Steel in the 1950s Tommy Steel was a sailor and the water he was singing about was the salty sea water but the water on land in some cases was much worse as it carried fatal diseases. Care had to be taken to where drinking water was obtained, right up to the end of the nineteen fifties, when piped water was made widely available in England, but it isn t totally available even to this day. Beer was the common beverage, brewed by housewives if space and skill allowed, if not, jugs were taken to beer houses, pubs or neighbours to fetch a supply for the household to use. Tea was too expensive until after the first world war. During the 19th century Badingham had two public houses, the White Horse and the Bowling Green and two beer houses, one of which was named after Queen Victoria when she became Queen. In 1845 a Thomas Wright kept the White Horse, a William Brown the Bowling Green, Hannah Fleming the Victoria and the other Beer House, a Joseph Bishop. The whereabouts of the beer house that Joseph Bishop kept is unknown, he died in 1849 which possible closed the business. Hannah Allum and William Fleming married on Christmas Eve Hannah was born in Horham but was a Badingham resident at the time of their marriage. They were publicans by 1832 and they had 5 children; James born 1821, Robert 1826, Louisa 1826, David 1828 and William The Victoria is just up the road from the White Horse, opposite Blacksmith s Pightle - William was a Blacksmith. 16

In January 1836 William and his eldest son James were caught with 3 pigs that did not belong to them and were taken to the court in Ipswich, whereupon William was sentenced to 7 years and Transportation to Australia! James got away with a no bill. William was shipped out to Australia on the Norfolk leaving in October 1836, arriving the next February in New South Wales. While William was on the prison ship Hardy in Portsmouth harbour, awaiting transportation, Hannah gave birth to another son Hezekiah born in September. William served his time and was released in New South Wales. As he was a Blacksmith, a sort-after trade, he possibly survived alright. He died on 5th September 1859 in the city of Maitland, New South Wales and was buried in Campbell s Hill Cemetery. Queen Victoria came to the throne in June 1837, that was probably when the Beer House was named. A noble act considering how the country had taken Hannah s husband away and she was left to bring up her family! Hannah continued to run the Victoria until just before she died in January She is buried in Badingham Churchyard. BADINGHAM IN THE INTER-WAR PERIOD By Kate Evans in conversation with Stanley Shelley and Norman Toby Philpot Rita s father. Reproduced from the Badingham Echo Feb/Mar 1998 It was still quite usual for villagers to have to go to a pump to collect their water at this time, since piped water had not been supplied to all cottages. Wherever rainwater could be collected from roofs, this would be done to supplement supplies. Outside the village, isolated cottages usually had a pond, which could at least supply the water for washing and cleaning. It was not unknown for pond water to be used for drinking too. When they were living "across the park" the Shelley family took their drinking water from the river. There was no alternative. If the river got dirty because of flooding they would take their supplies from a land drain. Eventually a well was sunk so that water could be piped to the front of the cottage. In those days the Alde still followed its natural course, meandering along and often flooding the land. The attempts to straighten its course, which were to follow, may have released much soggy land for agriculture by rushing the water onwards to the sea. But we are now beginning to appreciate that this may have been done too precipitately. It was the constant soaking of the land by the rivers that kept the water table high. 17

Few cottages had electricity either, given the choice between electricity and piped water, most households would have settled for water, it was such heavy stuff to carry and the laborious operation had to be so often repeated. Paraffin stoves were commonly used for cooking. An oven could be fitted on top of a paraffin burner. Simple cooking could be done at the domestic hearth. Some women were still using the traditional brick oven. Whenever a hedge had been trimmed the cuttings would be tied up into faggots and left to dry. As a woman started to prepare for baking a faggot would be cut in half and burned in the brick oven. This brought it to the required temperature. Then the ash would be removed and the dough was dropped into the hot oven on the end of a longhandled shove. In one session of baking the aim would be to produce enough loaves to keep the family going for a whole week. That many Suffolk women managed to rear large families by feeding them in this laborious way, is a tribute to their energy and determination. Flour would be bought by the sack (10 stone) if this could be afforded. Alternatively it could be bought by the half-sack (4 stone). Cake was a rare treat for the poor. The children whose mothers had no ovens really longed for cake. Indeed, memories of the early part of this period are associated with themes of great poverty. Norman Philpot recalled his trips to a nearby farm to collect a ha p orth of skimmed milk. Only on Sundays were the family allowed the great treat of a drop of real full cream milk. Free loaves of bread were distributed to the poor after the service at Badingham Church. The rent from certain fields belonging to the parish had been set aside to supply this. If you needed bread you had to go and hear the service "and then queue up for this 'ere loaf of bread. Distribution was in the hands of a Mrs Newson, who would count up how many loaves she had, and how many people were waiting. She knew which of the recipients came from large families and which were particularly poor. If there were more than enough to go round, some people would get a small loaf as well as a large one. According to Stanley Shelley, the charitable rents at one time became insufficient to pay for all the bread that the poor were needing. So as to be sure that anyone who stopped at the church for bread got some, the Rev Oakley "a generous old boy himself began to make the money up to the required level. As far as I know, the distribution of bread continued through the thirties and was only terminated when bread became rationed during the Second World War. Free coal was also supplied to the old and needy at Christmas time. The chief meat eaten by the Shelley family - and probably by most villagers in the inter-war years was rabbit. At the occasional village suppers that were held, the menu was usually rabbit pie and 18

apple turnovers. The Shelleys did not always need to make a lot of effort to catch their rabbits, the land "across the park" was infested with them. "The stoats would catch them for us. A stoat will only take the best. They kill the rabbit and suck the blood from its neck". If you heard a rabbit screaming and traced the sound, you could often go along later and simply pick up a beautiful dead rabbit that was lying on grass. On Sunday mornings Stanley also used to go rabbiting with an old man up at Colston Hall, who would give him a couple of rabbits to take home afterwards. "We had lots of rabbit meat across there, I can tell you". Other meats were eaten but not so often. When the peas were just about to get ripe, it was customary to go out and get a couple of pigeons. "They used to make a lovely meal done up with a steak of pork on top of them." In a row of cottages, one family would usually be keeping a pig. The others sent their food scraps along to help feed it. When the pig was killed, the meat would be shared out among all who had helped with the feeding. With the keeping of the next pig, another family would take a turn. "That's how we used to do" explained Norman Philpot. "My mother reckoned nothing was ever wasted. The things we left on our plates, the chickens would eat it and we'd have it back as eggs, you see. Everyone had a swill tub." At Factory House lived Will Keable s father, the village knackerman, with the task of clearing up any animal that died on a farm. So that he could run around in his knacker's cart, he kept one or two horses. When he had a dead horse on the back of this, the shafts would be right up in the air. Sometimes he would say to Stanley "Tell your father to come and see me tonight. Perhaps some young horse would have broken a leg, so that it had to be shot. Knowing that the meat was young, tender and disease free, George Keable was reluctant to see it wasted. "We didn't know we were eating horseflesh, it tasted like beef to us. Keable also kept pigs. He slaughtered one nearly every week in the building, which now serves as the kitchen at Factory House. People would go down there for pig's liver and various cuts. They were living close to their food supply and didn't need to traipse to Saxmundham to buy frozen cuts from unknown sources. ****************************** I hope you ve enjoyed reading this article, first published 20 years ago - when Jackie was the new Editor. Thanks to Jean Smith for loaning me this archive issue. Back then, 28 children had enjoyed their Christmas Party and the senior residents were looking forward to a lunch in the Village Hall. The handbells, a new acquisition, had been used to entertain in local pubs, hotels, churches and schools. Playgroup was 3 mornings a week. Maypole, the WI, Brownies and an Art & Craft group were using the Village Hall. 19

Can you help us? Have you recently finished studying, moved or retired? Would you like to have fun, meet new people and make a difference? Do something amazing help us to give girls in our community more opportunities for fun, friendship, challenge and adventure. We need additional adult volunteers to help run our meetings in Framlingham. We already have a small, dedicated and enthusiastic band of leaders but more help would enable us to accommodate the high numbers of girls that want to join our Rainbow, Brownie and Guide units and enable us to offer a wider range of activities. If you can t help regularly at meetings could you help with admin or accounts or visit to share a skill or hobby? No experience required, just enthusiasm and a willingness to get stuck in. Would you have time to help or know someone who can? Although only women may be leaders, both men and women can be unit helpers and occasional helpers. Our most urgent need is for help with Rainbows (aged 5-7) who meet early on a Thursday evening and Brownies (aged 7-10) who meet early on a Monday evening. However we also have groups of Brownies meeting early on a Tuesday evening and Guides (aged 10-14) meeting later on Monday or Tuesday evenings who would also welcome more helpers. Do get in touch by ing Claire on guidinginfram@btinternet.com or ringing Worth a look... A new Facebook page called Rural East Suffolk In Old Photographs. You ll find a great collection of old postcards and photos from local villages - including Badingham 20

Farming Calendar Work is piling up on the farm. Drilling the beans, top-dressing and spraying are all behind schedule as we wait for the right weather. You can always find other jobs to do machinery to mend and service, ditches to clean out and plenty of paperwork! Landowners pay a drainage charge to the Environment Agency, which contributes towards the cost of maintaining rivers and sea defences, but it is their responsibility to keep ditches clear to allow water from the fields to drain away. To protect nesting birds, there is a ban on hedge-cutting which starts each year on 1 st March. Farmers now need to register for a waste exemption before they can clean out ditches or burn trimmings from hedges. An added job this year has been road clearance. With few farmers having council contracts for snow clearance, people from across the village willingly worked long hours to keep the smaller roads open and rescue stuck and stranded vehicles. Cold weather makes it a tougher job looking after livestock. They still need feeding, bedding and water, whatever the weather. It was a lot tougher when we had pigs and cattle but even the hens needed visiting several times a day to break the ice on their drinkers. I hanged thick, old sacks over their doors to keep the cold out. Very old sacks one, much patched, sack is dated Mustn t throw anything away on the farm!
