3 Notes from the Editor Lots to squeeze into this month s Echo. Thank you to everyone who has sent me news and stories to fill the pages and adverts to fund printing. If there s anything missing or something you would like to read about, do let me know. It is midway through January, the daffodils are pushing through and the birds are singing away but remembering last year s late snow, makes me wonder if we might soon be in for a nasty surprise. If you are a snow lover, you ll be heartened by recent news that we could be heading for a mini ice age drag out your thermals now and think what you can save on the heating bills in the meantime. Realising Easter falls so much later this year, I m saving Sonja s Easter Egg-themed cover for next time. Instead here s a doggy picture which I drew for a local boy s 80 th birthday a couple of years ago. He s still putting in a good day s work on the land which must be testament to the good, fresh air in these parts - so get outside and fill your lungs! Best wishes Tish The ECHO is produced for the villagers of Badingham by the Badingham Community Council Registered Charity No The Editor s decision on whether or where to place material is final. While every effort is made to check information published, the BCC does not endorse the accuracy or reliability of any article or advert within the magazine. E.O.E. 3

4 BADINGHAM The BCC wishes all Badingham residents and their families a very happy and healthy The seasonal gift delivered from the BCC was a tin of chocolates and many letters and words of thanks have been received including Jean & Tony Kelk, Christine Green, Margot & Ian Wolstenholme, Warwick Faville, Inge & Alfred Hoffman, Audrey & John Appleby, David Clarke, Veronica & Sam Bolderston. For any new residents in the village, a seasonal gift is delivered to you if you are 70 years old or over by Christmas. Please ring Pauline ( ) to be added to the list. During 2013, two members have retired from the Community Council; Julian as I mentioned last time, and Inge, who has recently moved to Framlingham. They had both worked actively for the village for many years and we are looking for new enthusiastic people to join our happy committee in their place. Meetings only take place 4 or 5 times each year, when we plan events. All the money we raise is used to fund events and activities for the benefit of the whole village. Anyone willing to help please ring Pauline our next meeting is not until March, so you have plenty of time to think about it. More representatives from a younger age group would be good. A big thank you to all the people who diligently work behind the scenes to edit, print, assemble and distribute the Echo, which is hopefully delivered to every house in Badingham. There are so many who help and your time and effort in coordinating this valuable source of village news is greatly appreciated thank you to all. A huge thank you must go to Tish who produces each Echo please keep your articles coming in. Tish will always try to include them if she receives them before the deadline date. 4

5 Gerry and I are regularly checking for news on Badingham s defibrillator. Since the Parish Council gave permission for the equipment to be installed on an outside wall of the Village Hall we have been waiting for the site to be surveyed. This week we were told that a new surveyor has been appointed and he has 47 sites to review, across three counties. Let s hope that progress gathers speed in 2014 and we soon have an installation date for our defibrillator. All Badingham residents and BCC members are invited to a village get-together on Sunday 13 th July from 3pm onwards in the grounds of the church (by kind permission of Jonathan). The event is being funded by the BCC as a celebration of life in the village. We are hoping for better weather than our Jubilee Celebration it could surely not be worse! For now, please keep this date in your diary we will need numbers for catering purposes closer to the event. Further details will be in later issues of the Echo. 7 VILLAGE NOTICEBOARD Careless Driving in the Village I ride regularly in the village and sometimes have walkers with me to slow the traffic. I would say that I have a near miss weekly in Badingham; especially on the New Lea bends. I would like to survive to reach retirement and so would family walkers. PLEASE can drivers SLOW DOWN and be ready for anything around the next bend! You may meet something a lot bigger than me on a horse after the bend or hit a mother walking with a buggy! Ask yourself... if you kill or injure someone because you haven't time to slow down you wouldn't be going home, but off to the police station instead. SLOW DOWN, KEEP THE VILLAGE ACCIDENT FREE! Lindsay Maclusky Tuesday Teas Tuesday Teas will be starting again soon, please look out for the sign outside the Village Hall Clean Up After Your Dog A reminder to dog owners to PLEASE pick up their mess... 13 BADINGHAM NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH Sonja Russell, Head Co-Ordinator Tel: In the Oct/Nov Echo I mentioned monitoring thefts of nearby villages. Well, crime has hit Badingham three times since then so I urge you all once again to be AWARE if you see anything suspicious happening around you. REPORT it to the police 101 and TO ME! The police send me a information when crimes take place but we NEED to know from the owners first. Thank you. We have had 9 burglaries in the surrounding area. BADINGHAM LE/13/1250 Burglary Overnight 15/16 November - entry via rear of garden (over 6' fence) to workshop and shed. Crossbow, till and handmade jewellery stolen. 14 POLICE NOTICE Police are warning motorists to be vigilant after a number of fuel and catalytic converter thefts across Suffolk in the past month. Vans, 4x4s and vehicles with a high wheelbase are particularly vulnerable to this type of theft. Please take time to secure your vehicle carefully, report any suspicious activity to police immediately on 101 or 999 in an emergency. Next Echo - reduce the chances of vehicles being targeted. WARNING TO OLDER MOTORISTS The latest drink-drive figures show an increase in over 50s being caught. Numbers have risen by more than a third in two years and now account for more than one in five of all offenders. This shows these drivers need educating. The number of motorists aged over 50 caught above the legal limit on the county s roads increased from 124 in 2010 to 170 in Also, 14 motorists aged 76 and over were caught drink driving in This rise is put down to experienced drivers becoming complaisant, wrongly believing it is safe to get behind the wheel after one or two drinks. As someone in that age group (!!), I suggest to all of you, be very careful. Is it worth losing your licence? I don t think so. DRUG DEALER JAILED A drug dealer was caught on his way to the Latitude music festival to peddle cocaine. Officers operated stop-check points at Darsham on route to Henham Park. While speaking to the police, drugs fell from the trouser leg of 25 year old Daniel Martin of Ipswich. Tests showed the golf ball-sized wrap contained cocaine, wth a potential street value of 700. Ipswich Crown Court sent him down for 28 months and he celebrated Christmas and New Year at Her Majesty s pleasure. Perhaps this is a stark warning to those who behave like this!! DRUG DEALING A cocaine-dealing fugitive has finally been jailed for 25 years. Eriberto Jimenez-Melo became one of Britain s most wanted criminals after jumping bail before his Ipswich Crown Court Trial in The 35 year old was returned to UK from Italy after his recapture and will be serving his Christmas Turkey in HMS! Now for some advice! Make sure your sheds, barns and homes are securely locked. For vehicles, if not locked in a garage, make sure wallets, laptops, money etc and keys are removed and LOCK the vehicle. Sonja 14

17 Commemoration Day Laxfield and District Museum is holding a Commemoration Day in remembrance of those who fell or were damaged in any way by The Great War. We shall host a period re-enactment group from Stradbroke. There will be a static field dressing station, a field kitchen, depictions of period activities, children's games and displays of medals and citations. This will take place on Saturday, 3 May 2014, from about 12:00 (time to be confirmed) at Laxfield School. All proceeds from the event will be donated to Royal British Legion and Help for Heroes. The day will end with a parade by Royal British Legion members, senior representatives of the Armed Services and representatives of surrounding Parish Councils. The parade will be from Laxfield School to the War Memorial, where the names of the fallen will be read. As part of the display we are researching the histories of the names on memorials in all parishes bordering Laxfield, including Badingham. If anyone is able to provide information, perhaps relatives of those who fell in The Great War, local historians or the Parish Council, then it would be greatly appreciated. The archive for all villages will be displayed in the museum during the summer and a copy of its own archive will be given to each village. We are, of course, happy to share information with anyone who would like a copy. It would be a great help also to have more general information about The Great War. Do you perhaps have a photo of Grandfather in uniform or a letter from The Front? Please Barry.Cable@yahoo.co.uk or telephone with information. Barry Cable Trustee, Laxfield and District Museum 17

19 THE WILD LIFE SANCTUARIES of South India As I write this, I feel very privileged to have had such a wonderful childhood in India while other children were suffering during WWII. No trip to Coorg (Kodagu) in South India would be complete without a visit to the scenic splendour of its forests. Nagarhole Wildlife Sanctuary, with its 570 sq km of deciduous forests is made up of valuable trees like teak, rosewood and sandlewood; providing cover for monkeys and snakes. The dirt roads winding through the sanctuary can only be explored with a Forestry Department driver but you can easily see the spotted Chital deer in the clearings which have been dug on either side of the road. Sambar, the smaller Barking Deer and the Mouse Deer are more rarely seen. The Forest of Nagarhole, along with Bandipur an adjacent wildlife park, has become one of the last remaining habitats of the Asian Elephant (known in Hindu as ARNIE). As children, my sister and I used to go on elephant rides. The elephants leave for their watering holes early morning and late afternoon. These huge man-made holes are scattered throughout the area. You could easily come across the elephants, one or two or even a herd, as over a thousand roam these forests. It s wonderful to see. Protection against poachers, the dense cover needed for hunting and an abundance of prey all combine to make Nagarhole one of finest tiger reserves in India. They are very elusive and hard to spot but if, like me, you are lucky to see a tiger in the wild it is an experience you'll never forget. There are other animals: Bison, Panthers, Wild Pig also many species of birds, butterflies, waterfowl, lovely flowers and mushrooms. Bandipur Wild Life Sanctuary covers 874 sq km of deciduous forest, mostly teak and scrubland, on the lower slopes of the Nilgiri Hills where I went to school. This sanctuary was established in 1931 and is noted for its elephants, bison, sambar, spotted deer, bears, tigers, leopards and bird life. The best time to visit the Forest is May - June and September - November. Nilgiri Tar Sanctuary is smaller and noted for its buffalo. Periyar is the oldest wildlife sanctuary, created in The reserve of covers some 780 sq km and varies in altitude from 900m to 1800m. The terrain ranges from open grassland to dense tropical forest with an artificial lake formed by damming the Periyar river. It is abundant with wildlife, well known for its large herds of elephant and bison, spotted and sambar deer, tigers and leopards. The diversity of the scenery is reflected in the wonderfully rich bird life. About 1,250 species, how wonderful is that! Later on I will introduce you to the many birds of India.. Sonja Russell 19

20 Thank you to the team who organised the Carol Singing on the Thursday preceding Christmas. There was a good crowd in the hall but plenty of room for more, so do try to come along next year as it makes a great introduction to the festive season. I have also been asked to give special thanks to Victor for his beautifully decorated Christmas tree. Friends come home to Suffolk to see family and love to see the tree and I m sure all the village enjoys seeing its sparkling lights as we go out and about. 25 Karen Rae was the lucky winner of Philip Kelleway s book at the Christmas coffee morning raffle. Karen told me she spent many Sundays at the White House in her teens and the twins artistic talents were a great inspiration in her own artwork. Here, Karen shares some of her memories of the Johnstone Twins, Janet and Anne. Growing up in Badingham in the 70s, like many teenage girls I was pony mad and wanted one of my own. The next best thing was one to ride and look after, which is how I came to know the Johnstones and Janet s pony Victoria. I would cycle up to the White House most weekends. Janet taught me all aspects of horsemanship including riding, a little dressage and driving the pony and trap as well as the all-important mucking out of the stable and cleaning tack correctly! Janet even transported us to local Pony Club events. I clearly remember the huge Irish Wolfhound (very timid) that used to wander about the grounds. The twins and their mother, Doris Zinkeisen, were always busy at work, even at weekends; working in their studio on some project or other. One project I remember was designs for a Disneyland-type theme park in Holland based on Hans Christian Anderson's work, although this didn't happen in the end. Sometimes Janet would show me a tiny fieldmouse or a bird she had found, using it as a life study for a drawing. I once had a tour of the house, when Janet showed me some of the paintings including a huge oil painting by Doris Zinkeisen based on the Book of Revelations. The years knowing Janet and Anne were certainly very interesting!! 25

27 COFFEE MORNING at ST. MICHAELS ROOMS Saturday 15 th March 10am to 12 Noon Framlingham Art Society is holding a Coffee Morning with stalls etc for the first time to raise funds for FAS with part of proceeds going to the St Elizabeth Hospice, Ipswich.
