4 THE WHITE BADINGHAM Firstly apologies that it s been six months and we are only now doing a piece for the Echo. This however is excusable, as our little feet have not touched the ground. The support for the pub has been tremendous and has far exceeded our expectations. So a huge thank you to all for your support. We have been so lucky with our team and they have worked extremely hard, so a big thank you to them as well. Over the last six months we have seen a huge success with our Tuesday nights. We would also like to thank everyone for their support for the funds raised during the village fete, with 200 being donated to the Macmillan Cancer Support fund by our local village band The Mojo Mechanics and the Occasionals and I m sure we all agree their performance was outstanding. Also, for their monthly performance at the pub, they will be donating 150 to the Village Hall fund. The monthly Quiz is also raising money for various charities and finally the meat draw raised 100 for the Bowls Club refurbishments. To help keep the momentum going, we have put together a little list of forthcoming events for December. 6 BADINGHAM Let s have the good new first! The long awaited defibrillator was finally installed on Saturday 15 th November and commissioned the following Tuesday. It is exactly two years since Jill Pickford suggested the BCC might like to purchase this potentially life-saving piece of equipment. Her idea was immediately acted upon but at times progress was very slow. The BCC needed to jump through many hoops but finally we are there. The machine has kindly been provided by the East of England Co-op but the BCC will pay for the installation and upkeep. As well as the defibrilator work new distribution boards have been installed so the Village Hall wiring meets present regulations. Thanks must go to Gerry Newman for all his correspondence, representing the BCC at meetings and giving up his time to give access at the Village Hall. Thank you so much Gerry. Unfortunately, the BCC have had to pay a higher premium for the installation work to be carried out on a Saturday. We felt it was important to act as soon as possible rather than wait until nearer the end of the year for the hall to be free on a week day. We are planning a Drop-in Evening, attended by a member of the Ambulance Service, to answer your questions about the defibrillator. Please come along to the Village Hall (see the board outside for time and date). The machine is simple and safe to use and gives clear spoken instructions. Although you don t need training to use one, come along to see how it works it could be you who may need it. Our AGM was held on Thursday Nov 6 th and how disappointing it was that only one member of the public came to show their support. As a committee we do our best to create a sense of community for Badingham but some events this year have not been well attended. While there was a marvellous crowd at the Fete only a few children came to the Easter Egg Hunt perhaps by bringing the time forward by an hour next year we can better fit with your plans? While great fun was had by those who gathered for the Village Picnic, it was disappointing that 30 people who had put their name down for the free tickets did not turn up on the day. At 6.50 per head, that meant the BCC spent 200 unnecessarily. Thank you to the people who did attend your word was your bond. Again, the faithful few turned out for the Coffee Morning in October. Thanks to Josie and Veronica who baked for England. We have some fresh ideas for 2015 but will need your involvement and commitment. The BCC are a great group working for the good of the village but we will have second thoughts about continuing without your support at events. 6

7 A huge thank you to Tish who produces the Echo so well, adding little snippets of her own that are interesting and may otherwise go unreported. Thank you too to all the Echo distributors your support is greatly appreciated. Susan and Colin Robinson have kindly delivered the Echo for a good number of years - our thanks to Joyce Probert who has agreed to take on their round. The BCC would like to wish all residents a Happy Christmas and a healthy, successful New Year. Pauline Skevington, Chairman BCC LITTLE ERNIE 50/50 DRAW Thank you all for supporting us during the year. So we re ready to start a new year of our Little Ernie 50/50 Draw on 1st April, please ensure that your Membership Form is completed and returned to the Treasurer as soon as possible: Gerry Newman, Priory Cottage, Laxfield Road, Badingham, IP13 8LR Best Wishes for Christmas and Good Luck for the New Year. 8 Family Christingle Service Join us at our Christingle Service at Badingham Church at 10am on Sunday 21st December There will be a chance to make your own Christingle during the service. Badingham Bowls Club What a wonderful season we have had. After uncertain times for so long, we now have a good future with Lisa and Mark at the White Horse Inn, who have supported us so well. The weather this year was superb for outdoor bowls and we took advantage of this and won our division in the Woodbridge League and finished in the middle of two Saxmundham Leagues. We had the pleasure of hosting a friendly charity game for the Vice Presidents Association and this made up the final amount for the purchase of books for blind children. Unusually, rain stopped play but we all enjoyed the afternoon. The only blot on the landscape has been a leaky clubhouse roof. An application was made to the Adnams Charity for a grant for materials to repair the roof and this has been successful, which is just the best news and we are very grateful to the charity for granting this to the club. Thank you to all our members for such a happy season and more thanks to Ray Dearing who runs the club and maintains the green. If anyone in the village would like to try out the game please let me know in April/May and I can arrange a 'try before you buy' session. Lola Reeman 8

11 The Maypole Club We always welcome new members and visitors to our meetings on every second Wednesday in the month. The Maypole Club had to cancel the meeting in September due to a power cut but in October we had a great time learning and tasting wines from Italy with the excellent help of two of the Badingham Wine Circle members. We held an AGM in November with Mandy and Gillian volunteering to another year for their sins!! We are having our Christmas meal at our excellent pub, The White Horse - loosen the waist bands!! We start in the New Year with a musical quiz to which any ladies are welcome to attend and put their brains together to beat last years winners Helen, Karen and Linda! See you all in you will be most welcome! Mandy Gillian Saint John The Baptist Church, Badingham The weather has changed and Winter seems to be upon us, hopefully lawn mowers can be put away for a little while. It seems and appropriate time to say a huge thank you to the band of volunteers who keep our church yard looking so pristine all through the growing season. They work very hard and all their efforts are much appreciated by the PCC and everyone who uses the churchyard. While thanking those who look after our churchyard it is a good time to also say a big thank you to everyone who helps to keep our church clean and those who do the flowers on a regular basis throughout the year. Visitors often comment that it is obvious that our village church is well cared for and without you all this would not be so. Victor Warne & Bob Foster (Church Wardens) on behalf of Badingham PCC 11

Stolen tools include hand tools in a shipwright s wooden tool box, biscuit jointers, saws, disc cutters, planes, routers, chisels and sanders were taken. If anyone sees these at a car boot etc contact 101 ref WO/14/1250. Sky Lanterns There is growing concern about the potential hazard posed to wildlife and property by use of lanterns and helium-filled latex balloons. Many countries have already banned the use of lanterns, described as flying bonfires. As lanterns contain a naked flame, there is a serious fire risk but there are reports of littering on land and sea, injury to farm animals and wildlife who have either been caught in or eaten the remnants and worries about risks to aviation. Mobile Phones There has been a big increase in the number of crashes in Suffolk involving people using mobile and hand free phones whilst driving. Police believe the 60 fine is far too lenient as many drivers, cyclists and pedestrians have suffered serious injury through the loss of control of vehicles. Owing to the number of fatal road collisions involving mobile phones, there is growing pressure to increase the fine for using a mobile while driving to Badingham Have you seen a blue Ford Fiesta reg W558 VTW and a blue Ford Transit reg Y96 VJW with a high roof label taken off sunlight driven by 2 swarthy men. If anyone sees these vehicles, please contact Police 101 and myself. Mail Box Fraudsters - Police are warning people living in communal properties to be alert to criminals stealing mail to commit fraud. It follows a number of cases where mail has been stolen from postal boxes and then used to open personal bank and business accounts. T/Detective Superintendent Mark Afford said "the most basic fraud is simple theft of mail relating to financial products, such as credit cards, bank details, however, we believe in these latest cases fraudsters are assuming the identities of residents living at addresses and using their mail boxes as mail drops. To report any cases of fraud call Action Fraud on WARNING - Please lock up and make sure these items are safe: mopeds, motorbikes and bicycles. The Coordinators and myself with you all a happy safe Christmas and New Year. Sonja 13

25 Dr Dan Poulter MP Member of Parliament for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich It is now 100 years since the start of the 1st World War, and many of us will have parents, grandparents and friends who have made the brave decision to serve in our armed forces. In Suffolk, we are immensely proud of our own Royal Anglian Regiment. In my role as Government Veterans Health Minister, I have worked hard to ensure that veterans and their families receive the care and support they deserve, and am pleased to have directed over 22 million of funding to improve both the physical and mental healthcare of veterans. As a result, there are now 9 new veterans specialist prosthetic centres, making it possible for all armed services veterans who have lost limbs to have access to the highest quality prosthetic services and care. Veterans in Suffolk who have lost limbs are now receiving first rate prosthetic services at Addenbrooke s Hospital in Cambridge. But improving healthcare services for armed forces veterans is not just about improving physical health; a condition such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may not be as visible as an amputation, but it can cause just as much distress. Our brave ex-servicemen and women are now being served by more mental health professionals than ever before, with 10 new specialist veterans mental health teams firmly established across England. The Government has also funded access for veterans and Armed Forces families to a 24 hour veteran s mental health hotline, and the charity Combat Stress is being supported to provide acute PTSD services and care for our veterans. Getting the transition between military and civilian life right is so very important, and to make sure we properly support newly discharged soldiers, we have established the Veterans Information Service, which contacts veterans a year after they have left the Armed Forces and tells them where to go to get help and support should they need it. GPs also play an important role as they are in the right place to identify the special health needs of our Armed Forces community, and very soon there will be a specialist GP in every local healthcare area including Suffolk who understands the physical and mental health needs of our brave veterans. If you know an armed forces veteran or their family that need additional care and support please get in touch with me and I will do all I can to help. For more information please visit 25

29 Get behind the wheel of your favourite classic car Setting up a classic car hire business gave a local enthusiast the opportunity to pursue his lifelong interest and passion for classic cars not to mention the perfect excuse to own a Morgan! Big Sky Classic Car Hire, based in Badingham, was set up in Spring 2013 by Chris Neill and offers a range of British classic soft-top 2 or 4-seater cars including a Morgan, Triumph Stag, MGB and Jag XK8 for hire for just a day, two days or longer. Chris said, "It beats my previous daily London commute to work and the great thing, apart from the fact I get to tinker with the cars, is that I'm dealing with happy people. It's so rewarding to see the smiles of anticipation and excitement when people pick up their car and then hear their enthusiastic tales when they return." "Most of our hires are with local people who surprise their loved ones for their birthday, anniversary or celebrate a special occasion. Or sometimes it's someone yearning for the nostalgia of the classic sports car they owned when they were young. Check out our TripAdvisor page to read some great reviews." "Our cars are also very popular for weddings, particularly the Morgan which is such a stunner. Hired on a self-drive basis, I often think it's just an excuse for the groom or the bride's dad to drive a nice car!" Car Hire Vouchers are the perfect Christmas Gift and are valid for one year. Fully inclusive prices start from as little as 135 for a day in a fabulous MGB. Contact Big Sky Classic Car Hire on info@bigskyclassiccarhire.co.uk Badingham Church Coffee Morning Many thanks to everyone who helped in any way with our Christmas Coffee Morning and Sale.
