1 LIFE ACTIVITIES CLUB CROYDON Issue 272 Groupie Gossip OCTOBER 2018 President s Message - Shirley Driscoll Greetings to all Members, Thank you to Alan M. for organising the consensus quiz at our last meeting; a lot of fun was had by all who attended and we all got to know each other a little better. For our October meeting our speaker will be Dr Heather Wheat who, with her husband Lindsay, has been travelling across the globe for many months during this year. Heather was our LACVI secretary and Lindsay was our LACVI President: they both worked tirelessly to strengthen and grow the organisation. They have been enjoying their much deserved bucket list dreams, and Heather will share a sample of their experiences with you. Bring along a friend for what will be a fascinating journey. Now: a timely reminder that your Annual Fees become due this month: once again they remain at $ You ll find details and payment advice in this newsletter. Please note that, if paying directly into the bank, it is important to identify your payment with your name! Next month, November, is our AGM. All committee positions become vacant then, so I encourage you to think about becoming a member of the committee: now is the time to nominate. To liven things up, the entertainment for the night will be the Chordites, a Barbershop Harmony Quartet. Christmas is on the horizon, and any donations for Christmas Hampers can now be brought to the meetings for collection. Calendar... CYCLING John S Have YOU ever seen a bicycle without a chain but driven by STRING? This photo shows the mechanics of the Stringbike co-designed by Robert Kohlheb (interestingly, he is a violinist) made in Budapest since This concept provides 19 gears without the traditional chain-driven sprockets making it cleaner and quieter...but it is expensive! This is one of Murray s amazing collection of bikes. We have enjoyed good riding conditions this month and hope future Wednesdays stay fine. Contact me if you are interested in having a spin! - John 2

3 MUSIC APPRECIATION- Joyce & Daryl The Music Appreciation at Maureen and Ray's home in September was their usual excellent programme of good music; also DVDs of Andre Bocelli as well as an old favourite Foster and Allen. The next programme will be on Monday October 15 th at 1.30pm at the home of Jan and Ron Cox (ph ). We look forward to being with you all then. GOLF Peter G. ( ) & Marion ( ) Hello Golfers, During the last month the golfing fraternity has been favoured with mainly good, although sometimes cold, weather. Weekly attendance has been around 16 to 18 but we expect that to increase with the warming conditions and the return of those who have been absent due to travel, injuries and illness. We have recorded some good scores also - quite a few birdies here and there. Best wishes to Bill and Linda who celebrated 50 years of marriage (that s half a century). We celebrated several birthdays with our usual style singing and cake-sharing. If this piece is not up to the usual standard forgive me Marion is again sunning herself up north leaving a gap to fill. The word on golfers lips is now Traralgon with the upcoming October getaway see elsewhere in this newsletter. As always happy (and accurate) hitting. Your friendly co-cordinators, Peter (and Marion) Our Next GOLF GETAWAY Leonard TRARALGON 14th - 17th October 2018 The next club trip away, planned around golfers, is to Traralgon this month. I will be in touch with those who have put their names down for this. Leonard lacc.golf.getaway@gmail.com OUT and ABOUT - Edith ARCHIBALD EXHIBITION TRAIN TRIP to GEELONG TUESDAY, OCTOBER 9 th We will meet in the last carriage of the 9.42am train from Lilydale. This will allow time for a change of trains at Southern Cross. The next Geelong train departs from Southern Cross at 11.14am. The Geelong art gallery is in Little Malop Street, a 5 minute walk through Johnstone Park from the railway station. Around 1.00pm we will have lunch at an eatery close by, and could catch the 2.09pm to arrive at Southern Cross at 3.11pm - and the 3.24pm Lilydale train home. You may choose to use your Seniors Free Travel Voucher when booking your ticket; otherwise you should pre-purchase your ticket at a local train station for travel from Ringwood to Southern Cross and on to Geelong and return. IMPORTANT: Book with me by the evening of Thursday 4 th latest with $12 ticket payment The Archibald Prize is a timed-ticket exhibition, with entry every thirty-minutes. To secure our preferred viewing time, an advance booking is favoured rather than have to queue up. ARMCHAIR TRAVEL Shirley You are welcome to join us to view interesting travel documentaries - with a break for refreshments at 1.30pm on Friday October 26 th. 3

4 MORNING CHAT at WYREENA Edith or Shirley Tuesday October 2 nd at 10.30am. Visitors and members are very welcome to this friendly get-together at Conservatory Cafe, Hull Rd, Croydon (ph: ).. It s a popular spot so reservations are essential for our group. SOCIAL WALKING Jenny For our September walk, eight walkers went to Lilydale Lake. It was one of our first sunny Spring Saturdays, and many families were taking advantage of the great facilities the lake offers. It's always interesting seeing the model boats being sailed on the lake! Our October 13 th walk will be at The Arboretum in Dorset Road, Boronia. We will meet at our usual time of 11am at Devon Street, Croydon, in the car park. Hope to see you there: new walkers are always welcome. CARDS Gwen ( ) & Maxine ( ) 500 We continue to play in the Glenn Frost room, behind the Croydon Library, 7.30 pm. Dates for October are Monday 8 th and Monday 22 nd, Crazy Whist Also in the Glenn Frost room, pm. We use the straightforward Hong Kong rules beginners are welcome to try it out. SCRABBLE Pat The Scrabblers at our last meeting only managed to play two games, as it took so-o-o long for each one to finish: with no player excelling at the game! We re hoping for more impressive results at our next meeting, which will be on Wednesday October 10 th at 1.30pm. Cheers, Pat AFTERNOON RUMMEKING - Marianne Our September Rummeking afternoon was enjoyable with some new members. Hopefully, they enjoyed learning the game and we ll see them back again next month at 1.30pm on Wednesday October 3 rd. New members are always welcome. - Marianne KARRALYKA MORNING MUSIC - Norma Tuesday November 13 th at 10.30am: Pavarotti King of the High C s! This thrilling musical biography focuses on one the finest classical artists of the 20th century: the late Luciano Pavarotti. Opera star David Rogers Smith performs exquisite arias and popular songs made great by Pavarotti, as well as sharing anecdotes from the life of this legendary, larger-than-life star. The morning music show invites you to tea and coffee with delicious treats from 9.45am (45 minutes before show time). Pay ($21) for this November performance at the October club meeting. 4

5 PETANQUE Morris Petanque is back! - on Friday October 19 th at the GRIFF HUNT RESERVE on Lyons Road, Croydon North. Games commence at 1.30pm: we play for about 90 minutes, followed by tea/coffee at my home which is also on Lyons Road. Come along, as it is easy to play - just a few rules to learn and not physically strenuous! Morris SNOOKER Steve Hi Fast Shooters, In September there were enough of us to play doubles: 1 st Game (to loosen up): Steve & Brian had the edge on Peter & Ron nd Game: Results - Steve & Peter 70, to Ron & Brian 45 3 rd Game: Steve & Ron 54 - lost to Peter & Brian 75 These games were of a good standard with plenty of laughs thrown in. The next shootout will be on Tuesday October 9 th at 1.30pm. POOL Steve Hi Guys and Girls, September s numbers were down again with only three players. It would be better to have at least four players, so if you re interested - give me a call. All players played well making the final scores: three games to Brian, two games to Steve, and one game to Bruce. The next Pool session will be on Tuesday October 2 nd at 1.30pm. COMMUNITY ACTION Malcolm Apparently the bad guys have gone to ground for the winter, so our letterbox services are currently not needed! BLOKES B&B - Jim Our next men s Beer and Banter lunch: Friday October 12 th 12 noon at the Kilsyth Club, in the West Wing, cnr Canterbury & Colchester Roads, Bayswater North (ph ).
