1 LIFE ACTIVITIES CLUB CROYDON Groupie Gossip DECEMBER 2018 President s Message Edith Martin Greetings to all Members, It is a real privilege to be elected as your Club President for the forthcoming year. I will do my best to honour your trust in continuing the great effort of your past President, Shirley Driscoll, who held us together for the past four years and deserves a huge vote of thanks for her endeavours in this role. Thank you very much, Shirley - enjoy a much-deserved rest. Many thanks to those who have continued to offer their services on the Committee, also the various convenors and other helpers who assist in keeping the wheels of this club s life well-oiled and turning. To new members who have joined recently Welcome. Please don t hesitate to avail yourselves of the various activities on offer. And if you would like to suggest an additional activity that other members may enjoy with you, please let one of the Committee or myself know, and we ll endeavour to set wheels in motion. 2 What s hot... The December 6 th Christmas Dinner Social (from 6pm) is our last Thursday evening meet-up for Special thanks to those who provided Hamper donations. Your generosity is sincerely appreciated. Reminder! Have you paid your membership renewal? If so, thank you. If not, note that if it s not with Tricia, our Treasurer, by the end of December...by Club rules you will be deemed to have resigned from the club. Club New Year Picnic See you there! Sunday, January 13 th Our Club Picnic will be held at Warrien Reserve, North Croydon from 11:00am. We have enjoyed this accessible bush setting in past years with parking, shelter, toilets and BBQ facilities available. BYO food and drink - and a chair to relax with your club friends and share your Christmas/New Year stories. This has been a great get-together to start off our new year of club activities - and even have a crack at Petanque if you re curious. CARE CIRCLE: Shirley ( ) Our best wishes for continued recovery to Rosina King, Eve Jondahl, Frances Geisler and Edith Martin, also to Peter Groszek who has been unwell. Activities... CYCLING John S The peloton has experienced some wet weather this month, but not enough to prevent the weekly ride. Our Christmas lunch will again be hosted by Don and Jackie, which is much appreciated by the cycling crew. The first outing for the New Year will be on January 2 nd. Hopefully, I will be allowed to rejoin after my cardiac rehabilitation!!! Wishing Seasons Greetings to all...and, motorists, please take this important Christmas message from VicRoads - John 2

3 GOLF Peter G. ( ) & Marion ( ) Hello Golfers, During November we were fortunate to miss out on any rain; and we enjoyed the multifaceted Melbourne weather - sometimes starting the game in jackets, and ending up with t-shirts and sunglasses. On average, our weekly numbers averaged fifteen players. We celebrated Kath and Don Brown s wedding anniversary - rumoured to be their 64 th. Well done both of you! Kath brought along a lovely cake, which served for her birthday as well. Don and Jackie Fuller returned to us from their overseas trip. The rumour of Don s demise was greatly exaggerated and Gayle took the opportunity (when does she miss one?) to conduct a living wake with a beautiful eulogy for Don. We hear that Don and Jackie, and everyone else, thoroughly enjoyed themselves.. Each week we have welcomed Eve for our aftergame coffee. She has been unable to play for some time, so we wish her a speedy recovery and return to our ranks. Our last official game will be on December 13 th and our first official game for 2019 will be on January 10 th. We wish you all a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy and safe New Year. Cheers & regards, Peter & Marion OUR NEXT GOLF GETAWAY Leonard Pearsell Queenscliff: 23 rd 27 th March 2019 (Four days by the seaside) The accommodation was finalised in August and I have paid $500 deposit on a lovely guest house. Golfers have already booked all the rooms for this particular golf getaway trip. Golf will be at Queenscliff Golf Course on Swan Island in Swan Bay, which is part of Port Phillip Bay. Further details will be provided in the February 2019 newsletter, seven weeks prior to the event. - Leonard (LACC Golf Getaway Convenor) And for non-golfers: While our getaways are planned around our golfers, they have always been open as Club events, allowing for participation by non-golfers. For the Queenscliff event, Lore has found for us the Benambra Boutique Bed & Breakfast cottage ( with rooms currently available for the nights of 24 th -26 th March. Book direct (and mention Lore s name) or, for more details, speak with Lore ( ). SUNDAY DINE OUT Edith This month, for our last 2018 dine-out, we ll get together at noon on Sunday December 16 th for an easy shared lunch at my place. Please bring a serving of savoury or sweet food that is easy to manage in a buffet format. I can seat 20 with enough glasses, plates, cutlery and serviettes on hand. We ll watch the DVD Scrooged, which is a take-off on Dickens A Christmas Carol. Please phone if you can come: and we ll enjoy a happy, informal December Dine-In. - Edith 3

On Saturday January 12 th we will meet at Devon St, Croydon - in the station car park - and drive to Schwerkolt Cottage for our walk.. Best regards Jim MUSIC APPRECIATION - Joyce & Daryl The November music was our Christmas theme and enjoyed by all, with many carols from The Melbourne Welsh Choir, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra...also the Australian Bush Christmas Carols. A nice afternoon tea was followed by a DVD of a concert with Jonathon Veira, from a theatre in Guildford, England. Our next Music Appreciation will be on Monday January 21 st 2019 at 1.30pm, at the home of Edith Martin ( ). We thank you for your support this year; also, we wish you all - a Happy and Healthy Christmas. - Joyce & Daryl MAH JONG Alan M We ll be giving Mah Jong a miss in December, as our usual playing day is clashing with other functions. We ll come together again after the holiday season, in February with a change of playing day to the second Wednesday of the month. So, tile shufflers, have a great Christmas, and be ready to Pung and Kong again next year. AFTERNOON RUMMEKING - Marianne We had a great afternoon s games in November, followed by arvo tea. Our next and last meeting for the year will be on Wednesday December 5 th at 1.30pm. - Marianne POOL Steve Hi Pool Sharks, The last Pool for this year will be played on Tuesday December 4 th at 1.30pm. Please note that there will be a break in January, and Pool will resume in February. 4
