2 Porthmadog to Minffordd 3 miles (about 2 hours) This short, but varied walk starts in Porthmadog, with its maritime museum and heritage railways, once a busy shipping port for the slate industry. After a long flat stroll across the historic Cob embankment, the route winds up into hills and rolling fields, above wooded Portmeirion, one of the area s most unusual sights a slice of the Italian Riviera in North Wales! Don t miss: Leaving Porthmadog, you cross the Cob, a two-centuries-old sea wall. William Madocks, who gave his name to the town (Porthmadog means Madock s harbour ), built the Cob in 1811 to reclaim low-lying fields from the sea. Cliff-top Portmeirion is a Mediterranean-influenced village designed, over five decades, from The buildings, among trees below the path, are a jumble of colourful cottages and quirky landmarks from the Italianate church and Gothic pavilion to the Chinese Lake and shell grotto. Refreshments: Porthmadog is full of places to eat and drink. The rest of the walk gets more remote, but Castell Deudraeth, an early Victorian mansion remodelled by Portmeirion s visionary architect, is towards the end of the route and has a brasserie, serving full meals or sandwiches.

The Morfa Harlech nature reserve is full of coastal variety, including dunes and tidal marshes. Don t miss: the unearthly Glastraeth saltmarshes, with their numerous tiny creeks, stretch for half a mile from the coast path to the estuary, and the island of Ynys Gifftan is accessible at low tide. Salt marsh lamb is a local culinary delicacy. The landscape around hilltop Harlech castle has changed over the centuries: the fields you re walking over were reclaimed from the sea and medieval ships would have been able to sail right up to the foot of the castle s crag. Start: From Llandecwyn station, turn right along road. At coast path signpost, turn right again onto tarmac track and follow waymarks. The walk starts on a road out of Harlech, with views back to the castle, and keeps straight through dunes to the beach. Don t miss: The seven-year siege described in the famous song Men of Harlech took place at Harlech castle, first built by Edward I in the thirteenth century. Its two rings of walls and towers on a crag above the sea are now accessible via a new floating bridge. The unique wildlife habitats around Harlech beach change as new dunes are created near the shore; distinctive marram grass is one of the first plants to grow on them, but older dunes, further from the sea, are covered in wild spring flowers, including several types of orchid. Start: Leave Harlech station on far side from castle and turn left on road. Turn right on lane signed to Beach and follow coast path waymarks. End: Llandanwg station is directly on coast path route. For church of St Tanwg and nearby café, continue past station on same road for about 1 / 3 mile. From Llandanwg s church in the sand, this walk runs along the picturesque Artro estuary; oystercatchers forage in the mudflats and gulls wheel over the marshes. After a short roadside stretch, the path crosses the river on a footbridge and winds along beside it. Alternatively, turn left just before the footbridge and follow an embankment into Llanbedr village, with its choice of refreshments, before strolling beside the river to the station. Don t miss: The little church of St Tanwg, hidden in the dunes at Llandanwg. The main building dates from the 13th century, but there are relics here from even further back in history, including a stone with Roman letters. The River Artro, its tidal estuary dotted with boats, is home to numerous wading birds; later the walk meets the river again as it flows past the pretty village of Llanbedr. Uchafbwyntiau: Mae traphont 700 medr y rheilffordd, Pont y Bermo, wedi bod ar draws y Fawddach ers 1867; edrychwch am bïod y môr a u pig oren ar yr aber isod a chlochdarog y cerrig bach a u brestiau pinc yn bwydo ar blanhigion ar yr ochr bellaf. Mae Rheilffordd Fairbourne sy n ddwy filltir o hyd wedi cario teithwyr bron yn barhaol ers iddi gael ei hadeiladu, yn wreiddiol fel tramffordd geffylau, yn Cafodd ei throi n reilffordd fach stêm yn 1916 ac mae n rhedeg, yn ystod y tymor, rhwng pentref Fairbourne a fferi Bermo. Mae dannedd draig concrid ar hyd traeth Fairbourne amddiffyniadau gwrth-danc ers yr Ail Ryfel Byd. Dechrau: O orsaf y Bermo, ewch tuag at lan y môr a throwch i r chwith ar hyd y promenâd, gan ddilyn arwyddion llwybr yr arfordir. Diwedd: Gan droi oddi wrth glan y môr, ar hyd Ffordd y Traeth, mae llwybr yr arfodir yn cyrraedd gorsaf Fairbourne, gyferbyn un pen o r rheilffordd fach stêm. Lluniaeth: Digon o ddewis ar y dechrau yn y Bermo, gan gynnwys dognau helaeth yn Davy Jones Locker wrth yr harbwr a pheintiau a golygfeydd yn y Last Inn. 29 8 Fairbourne to Llwyngwril 5 miles (about 3 hours) For a longer walk, combine with Walk 7 or Walk 9. This strenuous, but spectacular walk climbs steeply up from Fairbourne village into beautiful woods and past an abandoned quarry. The path loops past a waterfall and an isolated homestead before climbing again towards the Bryn Seward standing stones. Views from the ancient lane at the top of the hill take in the Mawddach estuary, surrounding mountains, and miles of coastline. Descending towards Llwyngwril, on an old drover s road between dry-stone walls, a view opens up of grassy headlands stretching to the south. Don t miss: The stream-crossed oak woods near the winding path up from Fairbourne have high rainfall and humidity, making them temperate rainforests. The trees often have mosses, lichens, fungi, ferns and liverworts growing on their branches. There are also relics of the old Goleuwern slate quarry, hidden here: bridges, tunnels, wheels and tracks. Adventurous walkers might seek out the deep, unearthly Blue Lake, a little way off the route. Around the hilltop lane at the heart of the walk are several standing stones, possibly Bronze Age, and prehistoric cairns. Start: Turn left out of station, right on main road into Friog and left up Ffordd yr Ysgol. Turn right before school, up steps and through wooden gate; up steep path, following coast path waymarks. End: Turn left beside pub, onto main road through Llwyngwril village. Immediately after bridge, turn right to station. Refreshments: Several shops and cafés in Fairbourne. Llwyngwril has a pub, the Garthangharad, and the handy Riverside Stores.

8 Fairbourne i Lwyngwril 5 milltir (tua 3 awr) Am daith gerdded hirach, cyfunwch gyda Thaith Gerdded 7 neu 9. Mae r daith gerdded galed, ysblennydd hon yn dringo n serth o bentref Fairbourne at goedwig hardd a heibio hen chwarel. Mae r llwybr yn cylchu heibio rhaeadr a hen fferm cyn dringo eto tuag at feini hirion Bryn Seward. Mae golygfeydd arbennig o aber y Fawddach, y mynyddoedd a milltiroedd o arfodir o ben y bryn. Wrth ddisgyn tuag at Lwyngwril, ar hyd hen ffordd y porthmyn rhwng waliau cerrig, ceir golygfa o benrhynau glaswelltog yn ymestyn tua r de. Uchafbwyntiau: Mae llawer o law yn cwympo a lleithder uchel yn y coed derw ger y llwybr troellog uwchben Fairbourne, sy n eu gwneud yn fforest law gynnes. Mae mwsogl, cen, ffwngi, rhedyn a llysiau r afu yn tyfu ar ganghennau r coed. Mae creiriau hen chwarel lechi Goleuwern, wedi eu cuddio yma: pontydd, twneli, olwynion a thraciau. Gall cerddwyr anturus fynd i chwilio am lyn dwfn anaearol y Blue Lake, sydd ychydig oddi ar y llwybr. O amgylch y lôn ar ben y bryn ar ganol y daith mae nifer o feini hirion, o bosib o r Oes Efydd, a charneddi cynhanesyddol. Dechrau: Trowch i r chwith allan o r orsaf, i r dde ar y ffordd fawr i Friog ac i r chwith i fyny Ffordd yr Ysgol. Trowch i r dde cyn cyrraedd yr ysgol, i fyny grisiau a drwy giât bren gan ddilyn cyfeirbwyntiau llwybr yr arfodir. Diwedd: Trowch i r chwith ger y dafarn, i r ffordd fawr drwy bentref Llwyngwril. Yn union wedi r bont, trowch i r dde i r orsaf. Lluniaeth: Sawl siop a chaffi yn Fairbourne. Mae tafarn yn Llwyngwril, y Garthangharad, a siop ddefnyddiol Riverside Stores.

9 Llwyngwril to Tywyn 8 miles (about 5 hours) For a shorter walk, the remote Tonfanau request stop, after 6 miles, is an alternative place to start or end. For a longer walk, combine with Walk 8 or Walk 10. This vigorous hike winds through rolling fields between sea and mountains, with views of Cadair Idris, passing ancient earthworks and isolated farms. It follows tracks, paths and brackenbordered country lanes, climbing steeply in places between tiny hamlets and stonewalled sheep fields with occasional, windswept trees. The path eventually crosses the Dysynni River and runs past a large salt lagoon as it heads into the seaside town of Tywyn. Don t miss: People have lived here for millennia and the landscape is full of history, including the remains of a small hill fort called Castell y Gaer near the path. Another Iron Age enclosure tops the lonely Foel Llanfendigaid hill near Tonfanau. Feeding the Broad Water lagoon, the Dysynni river is rich in birdlife. Look out for cormorants and red-breasted mergansers (green-headed ducks). The historic Talyllyn Railway, in Tywyn, was the world s first preserved railway and has operated continuously since Start: From Llwyngwril station, turn right and follow lane to village. Turn right again along main road, past bus stop, and left up lane by church. End: Stroll along seafront at Tywyn as far as Pier Road and then turn left to station. Refreshments: Shop and pub in Llwyngwril. Plenty of choice in centre of Tywyn, beyond station; when Talyllyn steam railway is operating, King s café at Tywyn Wharf station is handy for end of walk.

Llwyngwril i Dywyn Barmouth to Fairbourne 9 8 milltir (tua 5 awr) 4 miles (about 2 hours) Am daith gerdded fyrrach, mae arosfan ar gais ddiarffordd Tonfanau, ar ôl 6 milltir, yn lle amgen i ddechrau neu ddiwedd. Am daith gerdded hirach, cyfunwch gyda Thaith Gerdded 8 neu Daith Gerdded 10. Mae r daith gerdded egnïol hon yn mynd drwy gaeau bryniog rhwng y môr a r mynyddoedd, gyda golygfeydd o Gader Idris, heibio i hen gloddweithiau a ffermydd unig. Mae n dilyn traciau, llwybrau a lonydd cefn gwlad wedi u hamgylchynu gan redyn, gan ddringo yn serth mewn mannau rhwng pentrefi bychain a chaeau o ddefaid a waliau cerrig o u cwmpas a choed yn nanedd y gwynt. Yn y pen draw, mae r llwybr yn croesi Afon Dysynni ac yn rhedeg heibio morlyn mawr ar ei ffordd i dref glan môr Tywyn. Uchafbwyntiau: Mae pobl yn byw yma ers miloedd o flnyddoedd ac mae r tirlun yn llawn hanes, gan gynnwys adfeilion bryngaer fechan o r enw Castell y Gaer ger y llwybr. Mae amgae arall o Oes yr Haearn ar ben bryn unig Foel Llanfendigaid ger Tonfanau. Yn rhedeg i Aber Dysynni, mae r afon Dysynni yn gyfoeth o adar. Chwiliwch am fulfrain a hwyaid danheddog bronrudd (hwyaid pen gwyrdd). Rheilffordd hanesyddol Talyllyn, yn Nhywyn, oedd rheilffordd gadwraeth gyntaf y byd ac mae wedi gweithredu n ddi-dor ers Dechrau: O orsaf Llwyngwril, trowch i r dde a dilynwch y lôn i r pentref. Trowch i r dde hefyd ar hyd y ffordd fawr, heibio r arosfan bysiau, ac i r chwith i fyny lôn ger yr eglwys. Diwedd: Cerddwch ar hyd glan môr Tywyn mor bell â Ffordd y Pier, ac yna trowch i r chwith i r orsaf. Lluniaeth: Siop a thafarn yn Llwyngwril. Digon o ddewis yng nghanol Tywyn, y tu hwnt i r orsaf station; pan fydd rheilffordd stem Talyllyn ar agor, mae Caffi King s yng ngorsaf Cei Tywyn yn ddefnyddiol ar ddiwedd y daith.

10 Tywyn to Aberdyfi 4 miles (about 2 hours) For a longer walk, start from Tonfanau request stop 2 miles north of Tywyn. Views along the Cambrian coast to Aberystwyth and beyond give this flat beach stroll an epic quality. Almost all the route runs between the sand dunes and the sea, curving gradually eastwards into the Dyfi estuary. Approaching the village of Aberdyfi, views across to Ynyslas and inland towards the mountains replace the open ocean. Don t miss: The tidal Dyfi estuary is rich in wildlife, including all kinds of seabirds and waders a UNESCO biosphere reserve. It s an ever-shifting sculpture of sand and water, which at low tide can look like a moonscape. Look out for birds of prey, like mighty buzzards or fork-tailed red kite, soaring in the sky above. Aberdyfi is a picturesque seaside village on the shores of the estuary; the beaches here attract all kinds of boats, from yachts to canoes, and are popular with surfers and sailboarders. Start: From Tywyn station, head towards seafront, turn left on promenade and keep straight along beach. End: Just before you reach Aberdyfi, look out for square red life ring box in dunes on your left. Follow boardwalk through dunes; go under railway and left on path beside railway to reach station. Alternatively, continue on beach to Aberdyfi village. Refreshments: Tywyn and Aberdyfi both have plenty of pubs and cafes. Pebbles tearoom, near start of route, is open seasonally in a whitewashed seafront cottage in Tywyn; in Aberdovey, you can choose from fish and chips, cakes and coffee, pints of beer or cornets of ice cream.

10 Tywyn i Aberdyfi 4 milltir (tua 2 awr) Am daith gerdded hirach, cychwynnwch o arosfan ar gais Tonfanau 2 filltir i r gogledd o Dywyn. Mae golygfeydd ar hyd arfordir y Cambrian at Aberystwyth a thu hwnt yn rhoi naws anhygoel i r daith wastad hon ar hyd y traeth. Mae r holl lwybr bron yn rhedeg rhwng y twyni a r môr, gan grymu n raddol i r dwyrain tuag at aber y Ddyfi.
