3 Slate of the Nation Huge fortunes were won and lost in the slate trade of the nineteenth century. During this period Llechwedd slate was shipped to destinations all over the world. 1 To start the day, take the X1 Express Motors bus from the Cross Foxes bus stop in Trawsfynydd to the Oakley Terrace bus stop on the A470 about 1½ km north of the Blaenau Ffestiniog town centre. Journey time: 35 minutes. The Slate Trail A visit to the Llechwedd Slate Caverns followed by a trip on the charming Ffestiniog Railway will allow you to trace the Slate Trail from the quarry in Blaenau Ffestiniog to the bustling town of Porthmadog, perched on the edge of the Afon Glaslyn estuary.
