8 Enjoying Snowdonia Safely Before you set off for the mountains it s very important that you prepare thoroughly. The mountains may appear beautiful and inviting, but don t be fooled they can be very dangerous, especially in winter when conditions on the mountains are treacherous. Top Tips Plan your route carefully before setting off and tell a responsible person about your plans and when you expect to be back. Remember to let that person know when you do come back safely, or if your plans change. Make sure that your choice of route suits the fitness and experience level of everyone in your group. Remember that reaching the summit is only half the battle, and that coming down can be harder than going up. Check the Mountain Area weather forecast specific for Snowdonia before setting off. Mountain weather can change suddenly so don t be caught out turn back if the weather worsens. Don t just follow other walkers in front of you assuming they are going the same way as you they may be following a different or a more dangerous route than you. In an emergency dial 999 and ask for North Wales Police and then Mountain Rescue. Give exact details of the incident and importantly, your location. Remember Mountain Rescue Teams are entirely voluntary, please do not call unnecessarily. 7

13 Snowdonia National Park Authority s website A Community Centre in the heart of Cwm Croesor The remote village of Croesor has its roots deep in the area s quarrying and agricultural industry. Since the development of the village in the Victorian period, this unique area s community spirit has survived despite the threats of depopulation and an increase in holiday homes, which left only thirty residents here at one time. When an old farmhouse came on the market in 2002, a group of residents (Friends of Croesor) came together to see what could be done with the building, with the main focus being on what would benefit the local community. With the unique landscape that sustains the cwm in mind, came the concept of a cafe, gallery, community space, camping ground and bunkhouse. And after a lot of hard work and dedication of local volunteers, the cafe, gallery and community space is now open, and is very popular amongst walkers, campers, artists and local residents alike. The gallery is busy making a name for itself as a place to appreciate quality art. Art classes are held at the centre most weeks during the winter, and art shows throughout the summer months exhibit local and national talents. Visit the Oriel Caffi Croesor website to learn more about this unique project or why don t you drop in? A footpath links the Croesor car park with the centre. 12

14 Cynfal Falls Path How about walking this circular route along one of Snowdonia s most beautiful and lush ravines? Follow the Afon Cynfal River as it carves its way through the rocks and down a series of white, foamy waterfalls to join the Afon Dwyryd River in the valley below. The walk leads along rough public footpaths, grass and tarmac, with some wet sections. The second half of the walk, from the bottom of the ravine back up to Llan Ffestiniog is a bit of a climb. You will need: Wear comfortable walking shoes and take a raincoat with you if there s a chance it will rain. You will need the relevant OS map and compass 13

Further information: More detailed information about this walk is available in the Visiting, Walking section of the Snowdonia National Park Authority s website or by downloading our new iphone App Enjoy Snowdonia which is available in the App Store. A village saves its pub! As many pubs across the country close their doors for the last time, the community of Llan Ffestiniog has succeeded in re-opening the village pub and is running it as a community venture. When the Pengwern closed its doors in 2009, a crowd of local people came together to establish the Pengwern Cymunedol company to try and save the only remaining pub in the village. In 2010 the ancient building was bought by the community through funding from the Welsh Assembly Government, selling shares, and arranging many events to raise money. On 26 th May 2011, the Pengwern opened its doors to the public once again. The day to day running and management of this pub is undertaken by volunteers, for the benefit of the whole community, and this dream would not have been possible without the effort and perseverance of those volunteers. Visit their website for more information and to follow the development of this unique community venture. 14

16 Llyn Gwernan Path How about a leisurely walk around a beautiful little lake on the foothills of Cader Idris in the south of the National Park? Start/Finish: Tŷ Nant car park, above Dolgellau Relevant Map: OS Explorer OL 23 Grid Reference: SH Length of walk: Time: Facilities: Description: Around 1.9 miles / 3.1 kilometres Around ¾ hours Pay and display car park This is a relatively level footpath which crosses fields, woodland and along a stone and boardwalk path. There is one short section which is quite steep. Some parts may be quite wet. You will need: Wear comfortable walking shoes and take a raincoat with you if there s a chance it will rain. Further information: The Snowdonia National Park Authority has produced an information leaflet for the path which is available at the Dolgellau Tourist Information Centre or to download from the National Park Authority s website. 15

17 Llyn Gwernan Llyn Gwernan Lake, which is around 12 acres in size, lies on the northern side of Cader Idris, around two miles from the centre of Dolgellau. It is a magnificent location, with the summits of Tyrrau Mawr to the west and the Cyfrwy to the south a striking backdrop. Over the ridge to the north is one of the area s ancient paths above the Mawddach valley... The Snowdonia National Park Authority has been responsible for creating sections of new path to link to the public footpath on the other side of the lake. These are permissive paths, therefore you are kindly asked to respect the landowners permission granted for you to walk here. Don t leave any litter behind, make any excessive noise, or allow your dog to disturb livestock. Please close the gates. The land through which the boardwalk runs has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest owing to the depth of the peat found here 12 metres of it. The peat holds a complete record of pollen from plants that have grown here since the last Ice Age, about 10,000 years ago. By studying the changes in pollen composition at various depths in the peat, it has been possible to date the disappearance of the last glaciers with much more precision. It is rare to find such evidence as this in Wales. Juniper trees were among the first to grow here after the disappearance of the glaciers. Soon afterwards, the birch, alder and hazel trees arrived. Very few lakes throughout Britain have this extent of peat depth... A variety of fish live in the lake, including trout, sea trout, perch and eels. Great numbers of frogs and toads come here to breed, and in turn, along with their spawn, they are food for birds such as the heron and animals such as the otter and fox. Other birds such as the little grebe, moorhen, 16

18 dipper, and goosander can also be found here, and the osprey can be seen hunting for a bite to eat here during the summer months. The trees around you are full of creatures. This is a fantastic spot to see a band of long tailed tits, pied flycatchers and wood warblers, and to hear the cuckoo. The lake s edges are perfect for dragonflies and damselflies, and in the wetland sphagnum mosses, bog asphodel, cotton grass, and aromatic bog myrtle grow. Bogbean can be found in the ditches and lilies in the open water. Grass tussocks everywhere are home to small mammals such as the shrew and voles that in turn, are food for the stoat, weasel and tawny owl. 17

29 Park Authority Plas Tan y Bwlch Plas Rocks A love of Wales, its culture, landscape and wildlife check! An infectious enthusiasm check! Beards, check! Meet Twm Elias and Andrew Weir, Senior Lecturers at Plas Tan y Bwlch with half a century of experience between them. Although different in style and delivery, Twm and Andrew complement each other well and ensure that the range of courses on offer at Plas remains fresh, educational and most of all, fun! Twm Elias Twm has run and organised courses at Plas since He has broad ranging knowledge and boundless enthusiasm for the wildlife, folklore, history and landscapes of Snowdonia. His tales are captivating if occasionally a little on the tall side! Twm tell us a little about yourself? Being brought up on a farm with a passion for wildlife, folklore and history has made me who I am a missionary for the best things the countryside has to offer. I want to share my knowledge of what makes this land tick to appreciate its timeless yet ever changing beauty; the richness of its wildlife and the great treasure of its wonderful cultural heritage. Why is Snowdonia special to you? 28

30 The wonderful thing about the area is variety the terrain, wildlife, landscapes, even the weather. I ve been to some sites scores of times and yet it s a different experience each time. But what really excites me is how it all comes together. Learning more is appreciating more, and I love sharing that with people. Why is Plas so special? People return to Plas time and time again and that says it all. There s been a house here since the Tudor period, with the present structure developed to indulge the lifestyle of 19 th century quarry owning aristocracy. They succeeded, but it s fitting that the house with all its wonderful gardens, ancient wildlife, rich woodlands and stunning views is now open for everybody to enjoy. Andrew Weir Andrew joined the team in He has a passion for the great outdoors and leads several courses during the year taking in the glorious peaks and passes of Snowdonia as well as following ancient track ways and the wonderful Llŷn coastal path. His attention to detail and keen wit make Andrew a popular leader who enjoys a great rapport with his guests. Andrew tell us a little about yourself? As a child brought up in a small village on the Llŷn Peninsula, lying between the mountains of Snowdonia and the sea, I spent a lot of my time on my grandfather s small holding. I think it was there, carrying out farm work that my enthusiasm for nature and an understanding of the countryside were nurtured. There were many wonderful characters in 29

31 our community. It was these characters that influenced me to want to pass things on to others and become a lecturer in the environmental field. Why is Snowdonia special to you? Snowdonia is such a special place, so rich in history and wildlife. Its people have an instinctive sense of place with a deep knowledge of their environment and cultural traditions, yet always looking outwards and aware of other people s traditions. For me, people and their environment will always be inseparable and intertwined. Why is Plas so special? Plas has a very special atmosphere, helped by its dramatic location overlooking the Maentwrog valley. When I started working here I was struck by the infectious enthusiasm and deep knowledge of the staff. In that tradition, Plas continues to pass on knowledge and understanding to others in the same passionate and fun way. 34 60 Wonders of Snowdonia On 18 th October last year the Snowdonia National Park celebrated its 60 th anniversary. As part of the celebrations, the Authority ran a 60 Wonders of Snowdonia project. The aim of the project was to celebrate the diverse wonders within the National Park boundaries that make this area so special and unique. Following an appeal by the Park for the public to nominate what they considered to be the wonders of Snowdonia, endless suggestions were received ranging from places and landscapes to people and local traditions. 37 SNPA News A walk for all to Llyn Llydaw on Snowdon Last July over 60 people had the opportunity to take part in a walk to Llyn Llydaw Lake on Snowdon, led by Rhys Huws and Gruff Owen two of the Park s Seasonal Wardens. The lively bunch included wheelchair users, people with visual impairments and young families. The walk was organised by the Snowdonia Society as part of the National Parks Week celebrations and the Snowdonia National Park s 60 th Anniversary. The walk is four miles there and back and provides a fantastic opportunity to experience being in the heart of the Snowdon Horseshoe. The path up to the causeway near Llyn Llydaw is quite accessible, but because it is a path up a mountain some sections are quite steep and a challenge for wheelchairs. If you re without mobility restrictions and are interested in going for a walk along the path in your own time you are encouraged to park at Pen y Gwryd and walk along the new path up to Pen y Pass, (Remember this path isn t accessible for wheelchair users) or use the park and ride service from Nant Peris (there is room for one wheelchair on the bus). There was so much interest last year the Snowdonia Society are hoping to arrange a similar walk again this year contact the Society or the Park for more information. 36

38 Eryri Local Development Plan On the 13 th July 2011 the Snowdonia National Park Authority adopted the Eryri Local Development Plan for the National Park area. The Plan will be the basis for decisions on land use planning within the National Park. This will be the first Local Development Plan adopted in North Wales and the fifth in Wales. The Plan aims to ensure that new developments consider the principles of sustainable development by promoting the purposes and duties of the National Park through conserving and enhancing the National Park s Special Qualities. The Plan allocates land for new residential developments, gives special consideration for the provision of affordable housing for local people and encourages sustainable economic growth in appropriate locations. Copies of the LDP including its Proposals Map are available at the Snowdonia National Park Office, Penrhyndeudraeth, at local libraries and at the Authority s Information Centres during usual opening hours. They are also available on the Authority s website Snowdonia Buzz In partnership with CALU Bangor University (Centre For Alternative Land Use), and WBKA (Welsh Bee Keepers Association), last year the Snowdonia National Park offered a unique opportunity for those living within the Park to keep bees! 37

39 Training courses through CALU were open to all, which enabled them to keep bees and make them eligible to apply for a grant through the Park in order purchase a traditional beehive. This was an exciting way to learn new skills as well as a means of promoting local produce and contributing towards biodiversity within the Snowdonia National Park. CALU training programmes may continue contact calu@bangor.ac.uk for more information, but the Park Authority s support for beekeepers will continue contact the Snowdonia National Park Office on for more information. Dolgellau by Merfyn Wyn Tomos On 17 th July 2011 at the Sesiwn Fawr Dolgellau festival the book Dolgellau by Merfyn Wyn Tomos was launched. It is a collection of old images that records the history of the town of Dolgellau. The book is sponsored by the Dolgellau Townscape Heritage Initiative, of which the Park Authority is involved an initiative to repair and restore the character of historic buildings and their settings. The book is for sale at the National Park s Tourist Information Centre in Dolgellau, priced at 12, but if bought together with CADW s publication Dolgellau: Understanding Urban Characteristics they are offered at a special price. 42 Friends of the Park Campaign for National Parks I grew up in what is now the South Downs National Park and that is where my passion for nature began roaming the Downs and canoeing down the river Arun. Today, I am delighted to help protect Britain s finest landscapes as president of the Campaign for National Parks. The Campaign for National Parks is the only national charity dedicated to protecting the National Parks so that they are available for everyone to enjoy. We do this by campaigning passionately against the threats that National Parks face from things like climate change, energy and other developments. We also encourage as many people as possible to discover National Parks, to enjoy the many activities that they have to offer and help us to look after them. The success of the Campaign for National Parks depends on public support. Without your help we would not have been successful in securing the designation of the South Downs and New Forest National Parks, or in protecting the National Parks from many damaging developments. To support our campaigns, get involved in our work, make a donation or find out more, please visit Ben Fogle President Campaign for National Parks 41

43 Snowdonia Society The Snowdonia Society (Charity no ) works hard to protect, enhance and celebrate Snowdonia. Our vision is a National Park in which the unique and irreplaceable qualities on which the economy depends are proudly protected by thriving and cohesive communities that have adapted to climate change. Through practical enhancement, campaigns and monitoring the work of statutory bodies, we provide a means for local people and visitors to contribute to the protection of this spectacular landscape, ensuring it can be enjoyed now and in the future. Membership benefits include a biannual magazine focusing on important issues affecting Snowdonia, discounts with local businesses including 20% off purchases from Cotswold Outdoor, informative events and exciting volunteering opportunities. Most importantly, our members support allows us to continue our vital work. Join us for a varied programme of educational lectures, visits and guided walks and, working with partners throughout the park, beach cleans, footpath maintenance, invasive species clearance, tree planting and more. In doing so, you will help to enhance the area, have fun, learn new skills and meet others who are passionate about the park and its wildlife. For more information visit or our office at Caban, Yr Hen Ysgol, Brynrefail, LL55 3NR. Alternatively, info@snowdonia-society.org.uk or call to speak to any member of staff. 42
