1 OUTINGS PROGRAMME 2016 MEETING PLACES: WH V Meadway, West Hill, Epsom: Meet at venue. F = Full Day M = Morning E = Evening A= Afternoon We encourage members to car share on outings, as some venues have restricted parking spaces and it also helps to reduce the impact on the environment. However, if you are unwilling or unable to drive to a venue you should try and make prior arrangements for a lift, as it is not always possible to find enough seats on the day. If you do travel in another member's car it is customary to share the cost of the journey. If you intend to travel direct to a venue please notify the leader Graham Cole ( : mobile) or Bill Vincent ( : mobile). Directions list to all venues obtainable at indoor meetings. NOTE: Most venues are quite exposed and need warm / rain proof clothing with stout shoes or boots. Full day outings require a picnic lunch, which may need to be carried with you on some of the outings. All distances and locations are approximate. Please refer to the leader if you are unsure. The use of a good map is recommended as some destinations are a little obscure and it is difficult to give precise parking instructions. WALK GRADE: Each venue has a walk grade assigned to it. Whilst everyone has their own view on what is easy and what is hard the following grades give some idea of what can be expected. Grade A = easy, and advises that the under foot conditions are generally good and the distance not too far. Grade B = some difficulty, and implies some unevenness under foot, possible slippery surfaces, slopes and / or moderate distance. Where A/B. is shown then this implies that conditions will be poorer particularly if the weather has recently been, for example, very wet. Grade C = difficult, and implies a long walk or underfoot conditions which are most difficult.

VENUE DESCRIPTIONS and DIRECTIONS 2016 (Note Not all of these venues are in our current programme) BEDFONT LAKES Leave the M25 at Junction 13 and take the A30 towards Central London. Pass through the Crooked Billet traffic light complex and then over another set of traffic lights by Ashford Hospital. Still on the A30 you come to the roundabout where you should take the fourth exit into Clockhouse Lane where there is a free car park MORNING Walk grade A WC nearby BUSHY PARK A3 to Hook underpass taking A309 to the Scilly Isles via Hinchley Wood. Follow A309 to Hampton Court. Cross over the River Thames and straight on at roundabout A308 (Hampton Court Road) towards Kingston. Just after a sharp right bend, turn left into Bushy Park. Pass the Diana Fountain and park at car park adjacent to pond. A walk for winter birds in a Royal Park. OS map 176 ref TQ Sat Nav TW11 0EQ MORNING Walk grade A WC CHOBHAM COMMON A3, A245 towards Woking from Painshill roundabout Cobham. Continue on A245 to six cross road roundabout taking fourth exit towards Chobham, A3046. In Chobham take the B383 signposted Sunningdale. After about ½ mile turn right into Red Lion Road, which becomes Gracious Pond Road. After about 1 mile passing Langshot equestrian center, park on the left on grass verge by fire beaters. Walk over sandy ground. Good site for Dartford warbler and nightjar. Bring an anti mosquito spray. OS map 186 SU Sat nav Near GU24 8HL EVENING Walk grade B No WC CLIFFE POOLS M25, Junction 2 M2,A289, B2000 to Cliffe. After 2.7 miles turn left at Rectory Rd, Right into Bucklands Rd and then Left into Salt Lane. The RSPB Reserve car park is at the end of the lane. OS map 178 TQ SatNav Near ME3 7SZ DUNGENESS RSPB M25, M26, M20 junction 10. Take A2070 to Brenzett following signs to Lydd Airport. At Brenzett still follow signs to Lydd Airport by taking A259 towards New Romney. After 3 miles approx. turn right on to B2075 to Lydd. Cross an old railway bridge fork left and proceed to roundabout turning left. After 1½ miles approx. turn right at a standard RSPB sign post. A 2 mile walk around old gravel workings, scrub and fields at this premier reserve looking for migrants. PM other venues near by. OS map 189 ref TR Sat Nav TN29 9PN FULL DAY Walk grade A WC and visitors centre ELMLEY RSPB M25, M26, M20 junc7, taking A249 towards Sheerness. Follow this road under M2, and A2. Proceed towards Sheerness. Take the slip road off the A249 just before the new bridge. Take the second exit off the roundabout and after one mile turn right towards reserve (signed). The reserve is at the end of a 2 mile track. Good selection of spring and winter birds. OS map 178 ref TQ Sat Nav ME12 3RW FULL DAY Walk grade B WC FARLINGTON MARSHES, HANTS A3 & A3(M). Stay on the A3(M) until it becomes the A27. Ignore signs for A27 Chichester, Havant and Farlington. Leave at junction sign posted A2030 Southsea (before M27 motorway). At the roundabout at the end of the slip road, turn left into the reserve just beyond the traffic lights. Turn in slowly as it is narrow. Proceed to furthest end of road, parking where possible. Walk along sea wall overlooking lagoon, grazing

4 marsh, reedbeds & scrub. Waders, wildfowl, good for early migrants. OS map 196 ref SU Sat Nav PO6 1UN FULL DAY Walk grade B No WC GILLINGHAM COUNTRY PARK M25, M26, M20 to junction 6, A229 signposted Chatham, M2 east, leave at junction 4 signposted Gillingham. At the A2 Bowater rounderbout, left onto A2. Follow Brown signs for Gillingham Country Park Sat Nav ME8 7TL HORTON COUNTRY PARK Horton Country park is sign posted from the Christchurch Road roundabout and also from the Chessington Road/Hook Road roundabouts. From West Hill, turn right and at the first roundabout take the first exit and at the next roundabout take the second exit. Continue a short distance and take the second exit at the next roundabout and Horton country park car park is about 220 yards on the left. OS map 176 ref TQ MORNING Walk grade A WC LAKENHEATH RSPB M25 East through Dartford Tunnel, Join M11 north exit on to A11, A14 and A11 sign posted Theatford. Take A1065 for 2 miles. Turn left onto B1112 sign posted Lakenheath for 6 miles. The reserve entrance is on the leftsat Nav IP27 9AD LONDON WETLANDS CENTRE A3, A306 which runs from the South Circular at Roehampton to Hammersmith. Once in Barnes you can follow the brown tourist signs to the centre. WWT Membership or Admission applies Sat Nav SW13 9WT FULL DAY Walk grade A WC OARE MARSHES, FAVERSHAM M25, M26, M20 to junction 7, A249 towards Sheeerness. At the M2 go towards Dover / Faversham. Leave at next junction (6). Take A251 towards Faversham. After about ½ mile turn left at T junction onto A2 towards Sittingbourne. At first roundabout in 1 mile approx, turn right. At next T junction in front of boat yard turn left. In less than ¼ mile turn right on hill at 3 Mariners pub. Follow this lane (to Harty Ferry) for just over 1 mile crossing Oare marsh. Park on right hand side adjacent to sea wall and small building which is wildlife centre. OS map 178 ref TR Sat Nav Past ME130QA to the end of the lane. FULL DAY Walk grade B WC PAGHAM HARBOUR, SIDLESHAM, WEST SUSSEX From Epsom take the A24 towards Dorking. At Beare Green on major roundabout at take the A29 towards Ockley. Continue on the A29 until roundabout junction with the A27, & take the Chichester direction. On the A27 (Chichester bypass) turn left on the B2145 to Selsey. After about 5 miles on the B2145, the reserve car park is on the left hand side about 1½ miles beyond Sidlesham. Good numbers of species, with migrants, at this seaside reserve. OS map 197 ref SZ Sat Nav PO20 7NE FULL DAY Walk grade B WC PULBOROUGH BROOKS RSPB From Epsom take A24 to Dorking, continue on A24 towards Horsham. At major roundabout take A29. Follow this road through Ockley, Billingshurst. At Pulborough, turn left at roundabout on to A283 to Storrington. In 2 miles approx. turn right at a standard RSPB. signpost. Migrant and resident birds. OS map 197 ref TQ Sat Nav RH20 2EL RAINHAM MARSHES M25 through the Dartford tunnel. Exit at Junction 31 onto A1306 for 1.5 miles. Signposted Purfleet. Turn Left into New tank Hill Road, following the brown RSPB Signs. Sat nav RH19 1SZ

5 RIVERSIDE COUNTRY PARK, GILLINGHAM, KENT M25, M26, M20 junction 6. Take A229 towards Chatham. Turn onto M2 towards Canterbury / Chatham. Leave at next junction (4) Take A278 to Gillingham. Turn left on to the A2 in approx. ½ mile turn right following signposts to Riverside Country Park. Meet at the visitor centre. Migrant and autumn birds. OS map 178 ref TQ MORNING Walk grade A WC RYE HARBOUR NNR, SUSSEX M25, junction 5, A21 ( towards Hastings ). Take A268 at Flimwell traffic lights, through Hawkhurst to Rye. At Rye turn right on to A259 towards Hastings. Proceed round outskirts of Rye on A259. Turn left at windmill. After about ¼ mile turn left again at signpost to Rye Harbour. Turn right at T junction and park in car park by the Martello Tower. Varied seaside habitats at this excellent reserve for migrants & resident birds. OS map 189 ref TQ Sat Nav TN31 7TT FULL DAY Walk grade A/B WC SHELLNESS, ISLE of SHEPPEY, KENT Proceed as for Elmley, but after crossing new bridge onto Isle of Sheppey carry on for 2 miles until you reach roundabout. Turn right to Leysdown (WC). Drive on and park in ½ mile at sea wall. Walk of about 3 miles. Can be difficult going after bad weather. Excellent winter birds. OS map 178 ref TR Sat Nav Near ME12 4RJ FULL DAY Walk grade B WC at Leysdown STAINES RESERVOIR Take the A308 from Hampton Court towards Sunbury. Turn right at roundabout on the B377 towards Ashford, Fordbridge Road. Turn left at T junction (by Ashford war memorial) onto the B378, Church Road. Cross the A30 at the Bull Dog traffic lights. About ¾ mile, car park on left under height barrier. OS map 176 ref Sat Nav TW19 7PU From Wraysbury take the A30 away from the M25 towards Staines. Turn left at the Bull Dog Traffic Lights. About ¾ mile, car park on left under height barrier MORNING Walk grade A WC at the supermarket STODMARSH NNR, KENT M25,M26,M20 junction 7, A249 towards Sheerness. M2 take motorway towards Dover/Faversham. Leave at junction 7 taking A2 to Canterbury. Take the A28 towards Margate. Within 3 miles turn right in Sturry towards Fordwich. Proceed through village to T junction. Turn left to Stodmarsh village. Turn left in village at the Red Lion pub and proceed to reserve car park. Excellent reserve for bearded tit and summer species. OS map 179 ref TR Sat Nav CT3 4BA FULL DAY Walk grade A/B WC THORNEY ISLAND A3 towards Guildford and Portsmouth. Join A3(M) and then follow signs to Chichester. After about 2 ½ miles on A27 just outside Havant, take the A259 towards Emsworth. Follow A259 for about 1 ½ miles and turn right at sign to Thorney Island. Park on verge at corner with Thornham Lane, about ½ mile. Leave vehicle entrance free at this point. Excellent for waders and other birds at migration time. OS map 197 ref SU Sat Nav Near PO10 8DD FULL DAY Walk grade A/B No WC THURSLEY COMMON A3 towards Guildford and Portsmouth. After Guildford leave the A3 for Elstead on the B3001. At Elstead Village Green, turn left into Thursley Road. Shortly after leaving the village the Moat car park is on the left. OS map 186 ref SU Sat Nav near GU8 6DW. EVENING Walk grade A/B No WC

6 TICES MEADOW A3 towards Guildford and Portsmouth. After Guildford take the A31 towards Farnham. At the Shepherd and Flock roundabout take the third exit, the A325. There is a second roundabout almost immediately where the route to take is the B3208 and follow it into Badshot. As you leave the village there is a second hand car sales garage. You can park here or take a sharp right just before the garage into Low Lane where ample parking is available. The entrance to the Meadow is opposite the garage. Sat Nav, Close to GU9 9LU. Afternoon/ Evening when combined with Thursley Common Walk grade B and No WC at location. WC at the supermarket TITCHFIELD HAVEN, FAREHAM A3, A3M, A27, M27 leave at Junc 9 Left on to A27 to West Fareham. Straight over the first roundabout and in approx 1 mile turn Right at Roundabout towards Titchfield Common, down St Margarets Lane. You come to T- junction turn left into Coach Hill, and after about 100 yards turn Right into Posbrook Lane. This winds along for about 2 ½ miles down a narrow road. You will find sea on your right and Titchfield Haven on your left! 2.90 entrance fee. Summer birds, possible Cetti s warbler. OS map 196 ref SU Sat Nav Near PO14 3JT FULL DAY Walk grade A/B WC WRAYSBURY, MIDDLESEX M25 towards Heathrow Airport. Leave at junction 13. Turn left at roundabout, signposted to Wraysbury, B376. At next roundabout, 200 yards, go straight across into Bell Weir Close. Old gravel pits and scrub. Can be very wet and muddy. Good for ducks, including smew and goosander.
