1 CLUB OFFICERS President: Nigel Farthing President Elect: David Knights LOOKS EAST The Weekly Newsletter of The Rotary Club of Ipswich East Edition th March 2018 Club website : Orwell Walk Website: Facebook page: Charity Number: Lunchtime Meeting at Greshams bell rings at 12.55pm Tuesday 27th March 2018 David Falk SCC Green Access Officer Suffolk Walking Festival Duty Rotarians: Matt Kennington & Steve Jones (?) Last Tuesday, Norman Lloyd, campaign manager at St Elizabeth Hospice, told us all about the launch of Hospice s next fundraising event, Elmer s Big Parade Suffolk which will be seen for 12 weeks in the summer of 2019 starting in June. Vice President: Liz Harsant Secretary: Tony Baker Asst Secretary: Martin Westlake Treasurer: Neil Hewitt April Birthdays Neill Keveren Bob Parker Janet Dillaway Kevin Day Satish Khanna Michelle Bevan-Margetts May Birthdays Peter Moss Tony Dodds Tony Baker Mark Murphy David Knights The trail which is based on Elmer the patchwork Elephant (the much loved children s book character) has seen St Elizabeth Hospice once again join up with Wild Art, who organised last year s Pigs Gone Wild art trail and new partner Anderson Press, who owns the publishing rights to Elmer. Pigs Gone Wild was a huge success raising 200,000 for the vital work done at the hospice. It also attracted 250,000 visitors to Ipswich Town Centre and Waterfront contributing 1m to local economy. The 2019 event which coincides with both Hospice s and Elmer s 30th anniversary is planned to be even bigger event running for 2 weeks longer with fifty Elmer sculptures around the city centre and waterfront, compared to forty Pigs last time. Norman informed that he is looking for sponsors for fifty Large Elmer sculptures which will form the main part of the trail and these will be joined by more than one hundred Junior Elmer sculptures. These are smaller and crafted just as creatively by children in local schools and community groups. The junior Elmer sculptures will be displayed in small herds in town centre stores and venues for the 12 weeks period. At the end of the event the fifty Large Elmer sculptures will be auctioned for fundraising. Satish Khanna

4 Association of Clubs in Great Britain and Ireland Conference, Bournemouth 19th-21st March Five members from Ipswich East IW Club and their partners attended (Margaret & John Barbour, Mandy & Des Cunningham, Catherine & Alan Forsdike, Ruth & John Goodship Val & Dick Jeffery) and a very good time was had by all. The conference began with a Celebration of Unity and Service led by our own Revd Catherine Forsdike with Bournemouth Area Salvation Army Fellowship Band and the District 8/24 Choir accompanied on the piano by Ipswich East s Rtn Revd Alan Forsdike. Both the Revs appeared unfazed by the nearly 2,000 people in the auditorium (they described it as their largest gig!). During the two days there were presentations from a variety of charities (EACH, Alzheimer s Research UK, Medical Detection Dogs, Modern Slavery) and inspirational speakers: Helen Sharman (the first British citizen to go into space) and John Benjamin from The Antiques Roadshow entertained us with the story of his life in colourful gems. Entertainment was provided by The Opera Boys on the first night. The Romsey Area Youth Jazz Band played at the end of the second day s proceedings (and very good they were too) and Old Dogz New Trix played 60 s hits for the Cool Cats Hot Chicks themed party on the last night when everyone let down their hair (and put on their animal prints). Here is a selection of embarrassing pictures. Far right is Association President Liz Thomas from the IW Club of Great Yarmouth in our District 8 with Rtn Tom Griffin from the Woodbridge RC who will be RIBI President in Club of Ipswich East International Afternoon Tea Sunday 20th May pm at the home of Margaret & John Barbour Tea, sandwiches and cakes Raffle, Tombola and games Raising funds for a Shelter Box to be sent anywhere in the world where needed per person 4

5 The Rotary Club of Ipswich East Registered Charity No In aid of Fresh Start SPONSORED CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT WEDNESDAY 2 nd MAY 2018 FELIXSTOWE FERRY GOLF CLUB The Rotary Club of Ipswich East is again holding its annual Sponsored Charity Golf Tournament at Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club. In addition to providing a most enjoyable day for all of the participants, the Rotary Club will again be seeking to raise a considerable sum for charity. The chosen charity this year is Fresh Start. As usual, there will be a number of prizes to be won, by teams and individuals including a sponsor s prize. We will also be continuing our ever popular tombola. Sponsors will have the opportunity to sponsor one of the 18 holes and display their own advertising material around the relevant tee or green. There is also the opportunity to display items elsewhere in the golf club by prior arrangement. The cost of sponsoring a hole is 100. Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club will provide all participants with an excellent fish and chip meal, served between 12noon and 7pm and this is included within the entry fee which also includes coffee and a bacon roll on arrival. The entry fee for a team of three persons, including fish and chips, is 195. If you are unable to enter a team but would still like to support the event, please feel free to be a sponsor only, in the knowledge that your money is going to a very deserving cause. To those of you who have supported this event in the past, we thank you for your support and look forward to seeing you again this year. If you have not attended before, you will be most welcome. To confirm your team entry and/or sponsorship, please complete the enclosed application form as soon as possible. Yours sincerely Chris Harrall Fundraising Committee Tel or chrish@charrallassoc.com 14 Penshurst Road, Ipswich, Suffolk IP3 8QY 5
