He travelled there via Beijing, the only way to access the country, he travelled with one other person and was escorted around the country by three people, two guides and one driver. They stayed in a large well-appointed luxury hotel in the capital Pyongyang. He made the interesting comment that the lift did not stop at the 5th floor, the site of the hotel s security and the possible site where several people have disappeared. Alan gave us some facts about the country. After the defeat of the Japanese at the end of World War 2 the peninsula was divided along the 38th parallel the south under American Control and the north under Chinese influence. The forgotten war in Korea resulted in the North almost occupying the south until driven back by United Nations force with an Armistice signed at the end of the war. There is still no formal peace treaty and tension still exists along the de militarised zone albeit it is less since Donald Trump met with Little Rocket Man. Alan visited the DMZ and he was aware of a lessening of tension, no loud music and propaganda. He gave us a thumbnail history of the country which is ruled by the Kim Dynasty. There are pictures everywhere of the Supreme leader his Father and Grandfather and visitors have to bow to them- the cult of personality.the present dear leader has had his uncle and half brother murdered. Alan s main impressions of Pyongyang were of a spotlessly clean city with hardly any cars and what ones there were were state owned, an underground system with no adverts an opera house showing revolutionary operas an education system from 5 to 21 which was free, school uniform was free with a flat. The people appeared happy but using measures of GDP etc the country is virtually at the bottom of the league. A fascinating talk and the vote of thanks was given by Bob Parker who was able to compare his experiences of China. Ian Lord Terry Butcher was last week s speaker. During his playing career as a defender, Terry captained the England national team, winning 77 caps in a ten-year international career that featured three FIFA World Cups. He also enjoyed success in his club career, particularly with Ipswich Town and Rangers. Terry subsequently managed clubs in England, Scotland, Australia and Wales, and also had a brief spell in charge of the Philippines national team. 4 Mark and Lesley were among a small group who were able to make the Twinning visit to Bad Salzuflen last weekend. (Ryan Air let us down badly) and here are a few photos.
