6 Neighbors Up and Down the Road The Foothills Yuma, Arizona The Foothills, east of Yuma, is a separate unincorporated community in Yuma County, offering its residents full services, many attractions, and recreational opportunities. It has easy access to I-8, with three exits - 9, 12 and 14. This rapidly expanding area grew 25% in the past 10 years, with a current population of over 27,000. There have been many efforts to annex this community into the City of Yuma, but local residents appreciate their independence and have resisted such efforts. The area is supplied by Farwest Water & Sewer, privately owned and operated. All streets are paved, accessing a variety of oversized residential lot options, including RV lots with pad and storage, park models, modular homes, and site-built homes, some valued at over $300,000. The newer cluster of homes comprise the more upscale neighborhood in the southeastern area. This area rises slightly allowing distant view. It s close to the Gila Mountains to the east. In addition to numerous desirable RV resorts, many of the private oversized lots are available for rent during snowbird season for those wanting a quiet setting without the RV park atmosphere. Enjoy all the Foothills offers with a variety of retail, dining and professional services, and local recreational opportunities. Somerton Just 12 miles south of Yuma, in the fertile Yuma Valley, you ll find the primarily agricultural town of Somerton, population 15,000. Drive the same distance south to Mexico as you go southwest on Hwy. 95 through San Luis, AZ. Somerton was established in 1898 and incorporated in 1918, on land once claimed for the fraudulent Rancho El Paso de los Algodones [land] Grant. This property along the Colorado River was very attractive to speculators. The U.S. Congress passed a law that allowed settlers who were on the land prior to May 25, 1898 to buy up to 40 acres for only $1.25 per acre. In addition to agriculture, there is some light industry starting up in Somerton. Citrus and vegetable growing and processing concerns employ many local residents, and some small commercial service companies are paving the way for more small businesses. For entertainment, there are many great places to eat lunch or dinner here, and the Cocopah Casino and the Cocopah Tribe s Wild River Entertainment Center, Museum & Cultural Center, & Speedway are recreational hubs. 7 Wellton Located 29 miles east of Yuma on the opposite side of the Gila Mountains, the town of Wellton is a lively center for business, services and recreation. During the winter season, the population of 3,000 almost doubles as seasonal vacationers flock to the many RV parks from the western states and Canada. It s no wonder, with so many warm, sunny days that the area in and around Wellton has become such a popular retirement destination. nce a water stop for the Butterfield verland Mail stagecoaches and then the Southern Pacific Railroad, this small town s history began with its founding in As cars came into use, Well Town, named for the water wells to supply the railroad, became Wellton which is now primarily an agricultural community. Coyote Wash Shopping Center is located just south of I-8 at the Wellton exit, on Commerce Way. The Coyote Wash Golf Course is a short distance south, surrounded by the master-planned community of Coyote Wash. San Luis Go an additional 12 miles south of Somerton, and you ll be in San Luis, just over the border from Mexico. The city promotes trade with Mexico with a combination of industrial, commercial and agricultural businesses. San Luis proximity to the border also provides a tremendous opportunity to leverage binational recreational and cultural assets. Shopping in the Mexican border town is always a favorite, and the open air markets in this town offer Mexican souvenirs, dentists, doctors and pharmacies within walking distance from the border. 16 Walk on the Wild Side at Yuma Parks Riverfront revival enters second decade with trail, education center by Ann Walker, Yuma Visitors Bureau In this desert city that long turned its back on the river that shaped its history, a milelong nature trail along the shore at West Wetlands Park marks the newest effort to expand access to the Colorado River. Complete with interpretive signs, benches, and even an outdoor environmental classroom amidst the tall cottonwoods, the riverside trail joins Centennial Beach and the rebuilt Stewart Vincent Wolfe Memorial Playground as star attractions at West Wetlands Park, which itself only opened in The new trail opens up groves of cottonwoods and willows that over the last decade have grown into a forest. Yuma Visitor Bureau When we started doing restoration, you couldn t even get to the river or touch the water because the non-native vegetation was so thick, said Charles Flynn, executive director of the Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area, which also spearheaded redevelopment efforts. We wanted to reconnect Yuma to the river that gives it life. We live in the desert. People just can t get enough of the water, no matter what the season, Flynn added. This work is not just for birds and animals but for people to enjoy as well. Yuma s 21 st century revival has centered on the Colorado River, with nine miles of paved, lighted trails linking a new hotel and conference center to two new city parks, two state historic parks now under local operation and hundreds of acres of restored wetlands. The trail system runs west from the visitor center to West Wetlands Park and Joe Henry Memorial Park and east through Gateway Park, the heart of the historic river crossing that first put Yuma on the map. Beyond the cean-to- cean Bridge, the paved trail skirts the East Wetlands for about two miles. In deference to the wildlife, this section is not lighted, but offers expansive vistas of marshes, wetlands, and riparian woodlands from dawn to dusk. For those who want to explore on two wheels, bikes can be rented at the Visitor Information Center at the Yuma Quartermaster Depot State Historic Park, 201 N. 4th Ave., by arrangement between Yuma Visitors Bureau and Mr. B s Bicycles. Since 2002, Yuma s environmental restoration efforts have been no small undertaking. Workers have planted more than 200,000 trees, plant and shrubs and moved more than 330,000 cubic yards of dirt to create two miles of channel and lakes in the once water-starved East Wetlands. As the tangle of invasive vegetation has been replaced with native trees and water quality has improved, wildlife has voted with its wings. The bird population has doubled and species diversity has increased by 75 percent. In addition, endangered Yuma clapper rails are now mating and nesting in the East Wetlands. Eventually, the various restoration areas are expected to provide habitat for more than 330 species of birds and wildlife. Ready to learn more? By taking preventative steps to care for your teeth, you can not only maintain a beautiful smile but prevent and lessen the time and expense of correcting and treating dental disease. The Arizona Dental Association recommends regular dental checkups and a consistent brushing and flossing regimen to remove plaque and harmful bacteria so that you can keep your mouth healthy. The best dental plan is prevention! according to Dr. W. Brian Powley, President, Arizona Dental Association. The vast majority of dental problems are avoidable. For most patients, having regular professional exams, x-rays and cleanings costs approximately $1 per day. Combined with a commitment to doing your homework, which means brushing, flossing, and watching what goes into your mouth, you can minimize your out-of-pocket dental expenses. Avoiding professional dental care due to lack of dental insurance is nonsensical. Schedule routine dental visits A visit to a dentist s office is an investment in you. These twice yearly recommended visits are important to evaluate overall periodontal health (the foundation of bone and gum tissue that support your teeth) professionally remove plaque and calculus, as well as checking for any signs of tooth decay, cracked teeth or restorations, and oral cancer. A visit to the dentist is also an opportunity to ask questions and discuss any pain, problems or other concerns. While the recommended number of annual visits to the dentist may vary per individual, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stress that it is important for adults to see the dentist on a regular basis to care for and maintain the overall health of the teeth and mouth. Periodontal disease and tooth decay are the most frequent causes of tooth loss. People with a higher risk of dental and oral diseases, such as patients who have had periodontal treatment, smokers, pregnant women, diabetics and those with weakened immune systems, may need to see the dentist more frequently. ral health is inseparable from overall health and well-being. Practice good oral hygiene To prevent oral health disease, the Arizona Dental Association recommends people use a soft-bristled toothbrush to brush their teeth twice a day with toothpaste containing fluoride to help strengthen teeth. In 2012, approximately 58 percent of Arizona s population on community water systems received fluoridated water, which keeps teeth strong, reduces cavities and prevents tooth decay. Flossing daily helps remove food particles that a toothbrush cannot reach and eliminates bacteria. The best dental plan is prevention! - Dr. W. Therefore, it is important that cancer patients are engaged with their dentist when undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment. Regardless of your dental history, it s never too late to visit a dentist for an examination and development of a treatment plan to address your individual needs and desires, Powley said. Remember, they are your teeth, and a dentist can offer multiple options to achieve the results you want to achieve. Don t be fearful or ashamed, Powley said. 35 Motorhome wners Group Headed To Arizona In March 2017 Members of Family Motor Coach Association (FMCA), an international organization for people who own motorhomes, will pack up their modern-day stagecoaches and make their way to the Rawhide Western Town and Event Center at Wild Horse Pass in Chandler, AZ, March 7 through 10, Located just south of Phoenix, Rawhide Western Town and Event Center will serve as the venue for FMCA s 95th International Convention, when the association makes a long overdue return visit to the Grand Canyon State. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. 68% of USAPA members are over 60 years old, yet this sport is not just for the seniors anymore. The USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) was organized to promote the growth and development of pickleball on both a national and international level and is headquartered in Surprise, AZ. According to USAPA, an average of 76 US venues are created each month; this growth is exciting. It makes good sense as the game is not only great for people s health, but it s good for local economies. There are hundreds of pickleball clubs throughout Arizona so if you re not finding out where to have fun in your area, you are missing a great opportunity to get exercise, meet people and have fun. As we know Arizona prides itself on being a world-class vacation destination. Demand for pickleball courts has become so intense that RV parks and resorts that don t have pickleball courts are losing snowbird business to parks that do. Fun Arizona Pickleball Facts: Arizona Senior lympics included pickleball in 2001 at Happy Trails Resort in Surprise. In 2009, the first USAPA Nationals was held at Sun City Festival in Buckeye. What you need to know about Yuma s ban on using electronic devices while driving The ban, in effect since early 2016, prohibits drivers from using handheld electronic devices, including a cell phone, tablet or electronic game for talking, texting or any other purpose while behind the wheel. The ban does not include hands-free devices such as Bluetooth, law enforcement officers, emergency vehicle drivers on official duties, drivers on private property and those who are legally parked. CB or ham radios are also excluded. Tickets will be dismissed if drivers can prove they were contacting authorities. Arizona is one of two states that haven t enacted any sort of ban on texting or talking behind the wheel. In Phoenix, Flagstaff and Tucson, drivers are prohibited from text messaging. San Luis also bans use of handheld wireless devices. Fines in all cities are $100 or $250 (accident). 49 ver the Border Los Algodones Guide The friendly community of Los Algodones is located in Baja California, Mexico at the California - Arizona border. It is about 10 miles west of Yuma. Go west on I-8, take exit 166 and travel south on CA Hwy. 186/Andrade Rd., past the Quechan Casino & Resort. You may park on the U.S. side in the secured Quechan Tribe parking lot for a nominal daily flat rate and walk less than one block to the port of entry. Most of the businesses in town are located less than four blocks from the border. American dollars are the currency of choice. You ll find a wide variety of shopping and professional services, including gift shops, pharmacies, medical and dental health professionals and open air cafés, offering prices that will make your trip worthwhile. Most businesses employ someone who is fluent in English, so you don t have to worry if you don t speak Spanish. Los Algodones is recognized as a safe destination for tourists. The small business community caters to snowbirds and American/ Canadian travelers with cost savings in mind.
