6 Neighbors Up and Down the Road The Foothills Yuma, Arizona The Foothills, just east of Yuma, is a separate unincorporated community in Yuma County, offering its residents full services, a variety of eateries, attractions and recreational opportunities. It has easy access to I-8, with three exits - 9, 12 and 14. This rapidly expanding area grew 25% in the past 10 years, with a current population of over 30,000. There has been interest in annexing this community into the City of Yuma, but local residents appreciate their independence and have resisted such efforts. The area is supplied by Farwest Water & Sewer, privately owned and operated. All streets are paved, accessing a variety of oversized residential lot options, including RV lots with pad and storage, park models, modular homes, and site-built homes, some valued at over $300,000. The newer cluster of homes comprise the more upscale neighborhood in the southeastern area, close to the Gila Mountains with a slight elevation to enjoy the distant views. In addition to numerous desirable RV resorts, many of the private oversized lots are available for rent during snowbird season for those wanting a quiet setting without the RV park atmosphere. Enjoy all the Foothills offers with a variety of retail, dining and professional services, and local recreational opportunities. Somerton Just 12 miles south of Yuma, in the fertile Yuma Valley, you ll find the primarily agricultural town of Somerton, population 15,000. Drive the same distance south to Mexico as you go southwest on Hwy. 95 through San Luis, AZ. Somerton was established in 1898 and incorporated in 1918, on land once claimed for the fraudulent Rancho El Paso de los Algodones [land] Grant. This property along the Colorado River was very attractive to speculators. The U.S. Congress passed a law that allowed settlers who were on the land prior to May 25, 1898 to buy up to 40 acres for only $1.25 per acre. In addition to agriculture, there is some light industry starting up in Somerton. Citrus and vegetable growing and processing employs many local residents. The community is experiencing an increase in retail services. For entertainment, there are many great places for lunch or dinner, and the Cocopah Resort Casino and the Cocopah Tribe s Wild River Entertainment Center, Museum & Cultural Center, & Speedway offer excellent recreation hubs. Check their scheduled activities and events while you re visiting Somerton. 4 Yuma Community Guide 2018 yumacommunityguide.com

7 Wellton Located 29 miles east of Yuma on the opposite side of the Gila Mountains, the town of Wellton serves the surrounding production of agricultural products. During the winter season, the population of 3,000 almost doubles as seasonal residents flock from the western states and Canada to the many RV parks. It s no wonder, with so many warm, sunny days that the area in and around Wellton has become such a popular retirement destination. nce a water stop for the Butterfield verland Mail stagecoaches and then the Southern Pacific Railroad, this small town s history began with its founding in As cars came into use, Well Town, named for the water wells to supply the railroad, became Wellton which is now primarily an agricultural community. Coyote Wash Shopping Center is located just south of I-8 at the Wellton exit, on Commerce Way. The Coyote Wash Golf Course is a short distance south, surrounded by the master-planned community of Coyote Wash. San Luis Go an additional 12 miles south of Somerton, on the north side of the Mexican border. The city promotes trade with Mexico with a combination of industrial, commercial and agricultural businesses. San Luis proximity to the border also provides a tremendous opportunity to leverage binational recreational and cultural assets. Shopping in the Mexican border town is always a favorite, and the open air markets in this town offer Mexican souvenirs, dentists, doctors and pharmacies within walking distance from the border. A rich heritage and cultural appeal make this city a unique community. You ll discover binational events ranging from a Corn and Date Festival, to the Tierra Sonora Concert and off road events. San Luis is the gateway to the Sea of Cortez where the Golfo de Santa Clara is merely 70 miles south of the border, which offers abundant recreational opportunities such as recreational diving, sailing, swimming and great seafood restaurants. The new coastal highway La Costera toll road connects Puerto Peñasco, Rocky Point to El Golfo de Santa Clara making a safe passage for visitors wanting to experience beautiful beaches, resorts, cruises, deep sea fishing, multiple water sports, and the famous Harley Davison bike rally. yumacommunityguide.com Yuma Community Guide

The whole idea of heritage areas under National Park Service supervision is to create public-private partnerships, and I think Yuma is a great example of that model, Flynn said. If the guiding purpose of History and a vision for the future heritage areas is a grassroots, community-driven approach to heritage conservation and economic development, Yuma is the poster child. From Native American tribes to Spanish explorers to gold-seekers, travelers found their way to Yuma for hundreds of years because this As heritage areas are intended to do, we ve told a nationally significant was the safest place to cross the mighty Colorado before dams tamed it. story about the crossroads of frontier history, Flynn said. 16 ffroading in Arizona Courtesy of Arizona State Parks Arizona State Parks and Trails offers many different ways for people to enjoy the diversity, beauty and excitement of the state. Whether in one of the 35 state parks across all regions of the state or on one of the thousands of miles of trails, Arizona State Parks can help you experience Arizona in a new way. With parks along the Colorado River in the west to mountainous trails in the north and lake-front property in the south, there are plenty of choices for your travels. Arizona offers unique experiences for RV travelers, and plenty of options for those seeking experiences off the beaten path. In the last few years, one new development has been the implementation of an offhighway vehicle program. This ff-highway Vehicle (HV) Program strives to create a user experience that enhances visits to Arizona s state parks for recreational enthusiasts. By adding several new team members and a more personal handson approach to engaging Arizona s vast HV community, Arizona State Parks and Trails has accomplished trail maintenance and construction, statewide trail mapping systems, economic impact studies, and extensive grant work. Since 2003, the HV industry has introduced a wide range of machines that make it easier for families, members of the ADA community, and outdoor enthusiasts to connect with nature. Arizona State Parks & Trails is conducting user surveys in 2017 and is excited for the results, as it will help us and our partnering agencies provide better HV programs to our residents and visitors. ne recent success story is the partnership between Arizona State Parks & Trails and The Arizona Peace Trail of western Arizona. ne of the most important aspects of the HV program s success is our ff-highway Vehicle Ambassador Volunteer Program. This volunteer program is newly-developed to enable private citizens to work with federal, state, and local land managers and public safety officials to promote responsible off-highway vehicle (HV) recreation. These volunteers contribute their time, experience, and local knowledge to create a positive image of their recreation activity; identify and record road, trail and other resource issues; and educate HV users on responsible HV use. There are currently more than 150 ambassadors state wide that help keep Arizona s trails open and maintained. ne of the most successful Ambassador activities is Show Me Rides. Show Me Rides introduces riders to new HV opportunities statewide by providing a free guided ride to the public. Please remember to always ride safe, ride smart, and ride sober. To learn more about off-highway trails, Show Me Rides, the Arizona Peace Trail, or other updates about how to enjoy trails and experiences in and around Arizona s state parks, visit azstateparks.com or call MY-PARKS. 14 Yuma Community Guide 2018 yumacommunityguide.com

The goal of this program is to make it easier for consumers, retailers and restaurants to identify and purchase Arizona products. Research indicates that, given a choice, consumers prefer to purchase locally grown foods. Besides eliminating the need for vast amounts of transportation fuel needed to ship food products, food safety and security issues are easily addressed when products from local farms and dairies are consumed. Buying AZ Grown benefits you and your community The best plants and produce come from Arizona. Choosing Arizona Grown products provides quality you can trust, see and - in the case of produce - taste. If you are an Arizonan, you can help the environment by buying Arizona Grown products. 46 Pickleball and Arizona A Win-Win Do you know what pickleball is? There are currently an estimated two million pickleball players with an astonishing eight million expected by If you haven t caught this sports addiction, there is still time for you! Pickleball is a paddle sport created for all ages and skill levels that is played both indoors and outdoors. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. 68% of USAPA members are over 60 years old, yet this sport is not just for the seniors anymore. The USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) was organized to promote the growth and development of pickleball on both a national and international level and is headquartered in Surprise, AZ. According to USAPA, an average of 76 US venues are created each month; this growth is exciting. More and more we re hearing that it s not only players, but cities, communities and schools that are jumping on the pickleball bandwagon. It makes good sense as the game is not only great for people s health, but it s good for local economies. There are hundreds of pickleball clubs throughout Arizona so if you re not finding out where to have fun in your area, you are missing a great opportunity to get exercise, meet people and have fun. As we know Arizona prides itself on being a world-class vacation destination. Demand for pickleball courts has become so intense that RV parks and resorts that don t have pickleball courts are losing snowbird business to parks that do.
