Warrick County began its climb to become the coal capital of Indiana in 1850 with the opening of the first mine, known as Phelps Coal Bank, near Newburgh. RECREATION Leisure time in Newburgh offers a wide choice of activities, from mud racing, drag racing, and motorcycle racing at the Chandler Raceway to more quiet recreation such as fishing, camping and hiking at the numerous parks within the county. Hunting of deer, rabbit, duck and other fowl is prevalent in the northern part of the county. The prehistoric Indian village, Angel Mounds, is also a unique and fascinating experience. The Ohio River offers boating and fishing activities. The spectacular Freedom Festival in Evansville is listed as one of the top 100 events in the country. Along with the Ohio River Arts Festival, it brings thousands to downtown Evansville every year.
