As well as being a five time winner of the Open Championship, Braid was a renowned designer of over 200 golf courses and Taymouth continues to be a fine example of his work. Other internationally-iconic courses he created include Gleneagles (which hosted the 2014 Ryder Cup) and Carnoustie. The championship-length course is laid out in the estate s former deer park. She described the castle itself as splendid as they drove up to it, as they were received by a group of Highlanders, dignitaries and pipers. Once inside, she wrote that all the rooms were newly and exquisitely furnished, with splendid features including the painted ceiling in the Baron s hall, the beautiful oak carvings in her private apartments, the fine Gothic nature of the dining room and the amazing views from her small sitting room across the wooded hills. 16

The origins of Highland Tay Retreat date back to 1550, when Sir Colin Campbell of Glenorchy built Balloch Castle.

The first element of the rebuild was completed in 1733 which is when the castle was renamed Taymouth Castle.

The work began in 1809 when the gothic design of the famous plasterer Francis Bernasconi was accepted.

This was demolished once the plans to completely remodel the castle, proposed in 1716, were put into action. The first element of the rebuild was completed in 1733 which is when the castle was renamed Taymouth Castle. In 1805 the architects Archibald and James Elliot were commissioned to completely re-design the castle and its interiors. The work began in 1809 when the gothic design of the famous plasterer Francis Bernasconi was accepted. The dominating feature of the current estate was completed by 1842 in time for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert s belated honeymoon visit. This was the royal couple s first visit to Scotland and the Queen wrote warmly about the welcome and hospitality they received, also repeatedly referring to the beauty of the castle and the grounds. It is said that it led them to build their own Highland home at Balmoral. The royal couple stayed at Taymouth Castle for 3 days during their honeymoon cementing the status of this magnificent location. 17

There are numerous masterpieces within the rooms accessible in the castle, from secret doors in the library to a grand hand-carved fireplace made from local chlorite slate, from a ceiling insured for several million pounds to wall hung Chinese silk banners.
