9 Housing at Ortutxueta Calle Ortutxueta Bilbao This proposal, winner of the competition Europan IV, involves the recovery of the lands of a disused mine next to a very densely populated working class neighbourhood It is part of a zoning operation of the authors who then afterwards break up into different tasks, according to the division of the plot This intervention is very directly connected to the project of the adjacent plot, which is the one that can hold the highest population density The project is adapted to the slope and creates a block with no access to traffic On this block, the buildings wind over a well-cared collective space It tries a type of row house which also takes advantage of the difference in elevation to regulate the heights and places emphasis on the decks which, in this case, become a fifth spectacular façade The scarce variety of types of homes is the least notable aspect Project is not public! 10 University Library Deusto Avda de las Universidades Bilbao The new Library of the University of Deusto is open to students, researchers, institutions and companies worldwide It seeks to pursue pedagogical innovation, while at the same time offering a dynamic and flexible architectural environment, in accordance with the new European Space for Higher Education In this regard, the open access facilities have been conceived as a space where users may find the best conditions for learning and research The development of the library must be seen in context of the wide range of actions carried out by Bilbao Town Council in the last few years, which seeks to consolidate Bilbao as a city of knowledge The deep changes that this city has undergone have facilitated, among other things, the expansion of university campuses in the city centre, as in the case of the new library The building is divided into five floors above ground and another five underground, all equipped with modern electronic resources Floor area/size m² Rafael Moneo University of Deusto hansbrinker The Library will be closed on Sundays, bank holidays and on the following days: 13 October, 2 and 3 November, 7 December, 22 December - 1 January, 28 January, March, 1 May, 31 July, 15 August, 22 August (Bilbao) Days with special opening hours:21 December: 8-12 pm The new University of Deusto Library is strategically located and integrated into the Abandoibarra area, facing the Guggenheim Museum 10

14 photo: Aleix Bagué photo: Aleix Bagué Bilbao Research and Administration Building Ibaizabal Bidea Bilbao This complex on the outskirts of Bilbao houses m2 of work area and almost 1000 m2 of parking spaces in a gently sloping green field site The new building tries to retain the atmosphere of the landscape comprising two rolling hills against a background of low mountains The volume is divided into three elongated prisms, two glazed and the other one made out of granite and concrete These were placed upon the different levels of the hill A fourth cubic block, also glazed, forms a square with the stone one that opens up onto de widest valley The glass façades draw in the humid and misty landscape typical of the region It was intended that the complex retained a recognizable scale despite its size, and that each working space should posess an understandable relationship with the rest of the building and the surroundings (text from website architects) photo: Aleix Bagué Project is not public! 18 Peine del Viento Paseo del Piene de los Vientos San Sebastián At one end of the Bay in San Sebastian at the foot of Mount Igeldo was where Eduardo Chillida placed his favorite piece of work, the Wind Comb (Peine del Viento), in 1977, with three spectacular pieces of steel anchored to the rocks and surrounded by the sea This is a magical space, which is a unique example of harmony between art and landscape The place, according to Eduardo Chillida, is the sole focus of works of art, and is a vital factor that conditions any activity As the beginning and end of the urban fabric in San Sebastián, the Wind Comb combines the artist s main concerns but it is the concept of space that stands out most clearly The artist s work is not included in a space but the work itself creates the space This is a place that, in itself, has attracted my attention throughout my entire life We all usually have a place like this in our lives ; the place has given me an idea of what I m going to do 1977 Artist Eduardo Chillida City of Donostia hansbrinker 24/7 Walk all the way along the bay La Concha, towards the west You'll find the sculptures at the feet of the monte Igeldo Next to the sea, at the end of the boulevard 18

20 photo: Mieke Vullings photo: Mieke Vullings Mugikleta Plaza de Europa San Sebastián This is a bicycle stand next to the campus of the University of the Basque Country A mobile and transportable module which serves to rent and store bicycles The architect Koldo Telleria teaches landscape architecture in the next-door Faculty of ure Each module costs Euro and in the first phase four of them will be installed in major municipalities of the Bask province Gipuzkoa Each module contains a service point for information and rent, a place to do small repairs and the storage space to park the bikes It is designed as an urban piece of furniture Two other modules will be placed near the station of Eusko Tren in Lugaritz and Amara and the fourth one near the Northern Renfe train station The title of the project is a word game, a mix between the Bask words 'mugitu' (to move) and 'bizikleta' (bicycle) photo: Mieke Vullings Koldo Telleria Diputación Foral de Gipuzkoa + Eusko Tren + Gureak MI_MOA 20

21 photo: Mieke Vullings photo: Naomi Schiphorst Building Ignacio Maria Barriola Plaza de Elhuyar San Sebastián This is the social services building for the University of the Basque Country It's situated in the centre of the campus and functions as a multi-purpose building, with offices, a central lecture room, auditorium, classes, cafeteria, canteen and exposition space The organisational clarity of the building goes beyond its external image, and is presented with powerful volumes The building is a semi-public space, with the lobbies dominating as university meeting spaces, a three-storey agora, hierarchically structured The building is open to the south, where the campus has a central green area, and closed to the north, facing the street Inside classes are organised along the street façade, to keep a broad and spacious area towards the south, where the corridor and stairs form an open informal meeting area The corridor opens up to the outside balcony The building is constructed with post-tensioned floor slabs which reach a transverse span of 11,5m with a thickness of 30 cm Floor area/size m² JAAM architecture partnership University of the Basque Country MI_MOA photo: Mieke Vullings 21

22 Plaza del Tenis Paseo de Eduardo Chillida San Sebastián Located at the western end of the boulevard that runs along 'La Concha', the bay in San Sebastian, the sculptures of Basque artist Chillida are placed next to the Plaza del Tenis The place is the beginning and the end of the city, it is a symbol of the union of the city with nature In a city that ends in a way, that is the sea The square is situated next to a Tenis Club, hence the name The public space is designed by local architect Luis Peña Ganchegui: "I looked for a similar treatment of both ends of the horseshoe de la Concha, at least in concept engineering of the city, an architectural engineering that is Where the stone is treated by the beds of architectural form, as blocks of a Renaissance palace As for the material, I choose the pink granite walls in Porriño A unique element, the cobbles of fixed and variable length section, it provides the unity of material and guarantees that the number of shares within the scale of sculptures " 1975, Landscape architect Luis Peña Ganchegui hansbrinker City of Donostia 22

26 photo: Cesar San Millan photo: Cesar San Millan Vital Building Paseo de la Biosfera Vitoria-Gasteiz &apdo=2#uno photo: Cesar San Millan This is the headquarters for the local savings bank The building reproduces the scale of the surrounding small woods, a park of the Natura 2000 networking programme The floor plan has a chromosome shape with four arms The structural concept is based on pairs of exterior metal supports, clad in stainless steel composite panels One of the arms has been conceived as a 26 metre cantilever In this case the concept changes and the pairs do not have any structural function A double height hall located in the heart of the building has its two façades enclosed by a work of art They have been constructed with bright red polyurethane panels with a manually painted biological pattern The idea is to identify the building as a live organism in motion A black skin made of glass protects the inhabited spaces behind the stainless steel pairs Project is not public! 27 Electric Ramps at the Old Centre Cantón de la Soledad Vitoria-Gasteiz This project came about from an idea competition organized by the City of Vitoria-Gasteiz The programme contemplates the creation of covered mechanical ramps, four sections in Cantón de la Soledad and three sections in Cantón de San Francisco Javier The decision to cover the ramps allows a better guaranteed use, given the extreme winter conditions in the city The covering will be both complex and simple It is complex in its apparent three-dimensional perception and simple as it is conceived from equal pieces, uniquely displaced among themselves The basic stainless steel and glass portico acts similarly to the shots of a film, by means of rotary movements around a virtual axis in sequences of one metre distances The sensation of rotational movement that the user perceives uses the movement of the ramp itself to create a connected sequence that holds one's interest all the way up, creating different views in different places along the way photo: Roberto Ercilla 2007 Roberto Ercilla Municipality of Vitoria-Gasteiz Roberto_Ercilla 27
