2 Teatro Auditorio San Lorenzo de El Escorial Calle Del Rey San Lorenzo de El Escorial The Teatro Auditorio San Lorenzo de El Escorial sits discretely in a side street, not far from the eponymous monastery The site, on the Calle del Rey next to the Parque de Felipe II, slopes, and the architects have taken advantage of the topography to reduce the height and bulk of the fly towers of the two auditoria 1200 persons can be accommodated in the main auditorium and 300 in the smaller one The complex is best entered via the adjacent park, from where one descends into an open courtyard around which the main spaces are distributed The main public circulation areas are finished in a very simple, minimalistic fashion, with a dramatic curved wall at the rear of the principle theatre stalls The exterior is clad with stone panels of a set module, which is applied with great rigour and determines almost every aspect of the architecture Picado de Blas Arquitectos City of Madrid 2

3 La Coracera Castle Calle del Castillo s/n San Martín de Valdeiglesias It is a 15th Century building, very altered in the second half of the 20th Century The intervention tries to enhance the architecture and original elements and introduces some new designs which do not alter the original concept, as if they were pieces of furniture that can be removed at any given moment 2010 Carlos de Riaño dhv81 3

4 La Granja Escalators and Car Park Paseo de Recaredo Toledo Dealing with cars in historic cities is always a thorny problem One of the many solutions available is the underground car park, which was adopted here However, the only space available was outside and well below the old city walls The architects provided the city with 400 parking spaces, but have also provided a series of 12 escalators to get from the car park into the old city The temptation to put in two very long moving staircases has been resisted Instead, the journey is broken into six stages, all with a slight change of direction between each flight The route is set into the hillside to take advantage of the views, and to keep the users dry in inclement weather Shelter is provided by a series of cantilevered concrete slabs These roofs have been planted to allow the whole structure to blend into its surroundings 2001 Structural engineer Martínez Lapeña - Torres Arquitectos Gerado Rodriguez Ayuntamiento de Toledo 4

5 Castilla-La Mancha Archives Calle Valdemarias Toledo This project (itself a competition win) has won several awards, notably one for the use of the terracotta cladding around the main volume When used to cover large areas, terracotta tile cladding can look flat and dull Here, the architect has overcome that drawback by introducing bands of tiling with a different profile, and interspersing them among bands of flat tiles This adds variations in texture to the four large windowless elevations, which would otherwise appear uninteresting At the top of the main block, the tiles have been used as a lattice or veil to disguise the roof mounted plant Corten steel clad fingers of support accommodation stretch away from the main block in opposite directions, along the street façade Public access unknown!
