3 San Telmo Extension Plaza Zuloaga San Sebastián The San Telmo Museum is housed in a former convent built in the mid-sixteenth century by Dominicans Nieto Sobejano designed a contemporary extension next to the old monastery Their intervention is two fold: first they remove the result of a long process of successive modifications on the old building This way the physical and functional character of the historical building can be appreciated again Secondly, they propose a new anex, in-between the Monte Urgull and the old building This extension is not much more than a new green wall, defined by the existing topography This new facade is a perforated metal skin, enveloped in plants which will blend the new architecture with the vegetation on the hill The annex houses a new entrance, new areas for cloakrooms, shop, auditorium, media-room, didactic hall and cafeteria and 2 pavilions with temporary exhibitions 2008 Structural engineer Services engineer Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos NB35 R Úrculo Ingenieros Consultores City of San Sebastián - Donostia MI_MOA The museum is under construction and closed until mid 2011 Tuesday to Saturday: 10:30-13:30 y 16:00-19:30 Sundays and public holidays: 10:30-14:00 Closed Mondays Closed on December 21st, 25th, January 1st, 6th and 20th, and May 1st In the summer opening hours might differ, check the museum's website to be sure The museum is pretty easy to find, at the bottom of the mountain Urgull with the Christ-statue From the centrally located Boulevard (not to be mistaken with any boulevard along the beach), walk towards the mountain through the Calle de San Juan Bus: 5, 8, 9, 13, 16, 18, 21, 26, 28,

4 photo: Mieke Vullings Aquarium Donostia Plaza Jacques Cousteau San Sebastián From its beginning in 1929 the Aquarium in San Sebastián, Donostia, has been situated on the western slopes of the Monte Urgull, just above the port Now a new phase starts and the old building is largely remodeled and extended with new functions like a large sea-front restaurant on top The Aquarium gets a new entrance hall but keeps its old façade Two large meeting rooms are added and two terraces upstairs of the Aquarium offer grand views over the scenic bay La Concha A new elevator joins the downstairs port boulevard with the higher Paseo Nuevo So the old and familiar views now have a new passage way Don t forget to get a kalimotxo with your pintxo at the top terrace You could stay there for ever Hoz Fontán Arquitectos Aquarium Donostia San Sebastián MI_MOA Aquarium: 3 April through 30 June and 1-30 September: 10:00am-8:00pm Monday through Friday 10:00am-9:00pm weekends and holidays 1 October through 2 April: 10:00am-7:00pm Monday through Friday10:00am-8:00pm weekends and holidays To get to the Paseo Nuevo, first go to the port, west of the old city (Parte Vieja) Walk along the water, and go up the Monte Urgull You'll pass the building There is no space for parking, nor public transport Grupo Bokado is the owner of the restaurant at the top, see for more information The opening hours of the restaurant differ from the downstairs aquarium 4

5 Peine del Viento Paseo del Piene de los Vientos San Sebastián At one end of the Bay in San Sebastian at the foot of Mount Igeldo was where Eduardo Chillida placed his favorite piece of work, the Wind Comb (Peine del Viento), in 1977, with three spectacular pieces of steel anchored to the rocks and surrounded by the sea This is a magical space, which is a unique example of harmony between art and landscape The place, according to Eduardo Chillida, is the sole focus of works of art, and is a vital factor that conditions any activity As the beginning and end of the urban fabric in San Sebastián, the Wind Comb combines the artist s main concerns but it is the concept of space that stands out most clearly The artist s work is not included in a space but the work itself creates the space This is a place that, in itself, has attracted my attention throughout my entire life We all usually have a place like this in our lives ; the place has given me an idea of what I m going to do 1977 Artist Eduardo Chillida City of Donostia hansbrinker 24/7 Walk all the way along the bay La Concha, towards the west You'll find the sculptures at the feet of the monte Igeldo Next to the sea, at the end of the boulevard 5

6 San Martin Market Calle de Urbieta San Sebastián This new market hall, now more shopping mall than food, replaced an old market place which was originally built in 1884 José de Goicoa designed this original building, inspired by a French example, the Les Halles in Bayona The old market was built at the point when the city of Donostia started to grow beyond its walls, and the market has subsequently expanded since Eventually the old market place with fresh fish, fruit and meat, has grown to be part of the collective historic memory and the social structure of the city Because the need for commercial space in the city centre grew, and the consumer behaviour changed, the city decided to replace the old market This decision was a controversial one Many inhabitants dispute the necessity of another new and mediocre shopping mall, and argument that the city, known for it's strong gastronomic tradition should not have replaced the fresh food-stalls with DVD's and clothing Floor area/size m² Main designer, Luis Uzcanga Almudena Grandío City of Donostia Naomi 6

7 photo: Mieke Vullings photo: Mieke Vullings Mugikleta Plaza de Europa San Sebastián This is a bicycle stand next to the campus of the University of the Basque Country A mobile and transportable module which serves to rent and store bicycles The architect Koldo Telleria teaches landscape architecture in the next-door Faculty of ure Each module costs Euro and in the first phase four of them will be installed in major municipalities of the Bask province Gipuzkoa Each module contains a service point for information and rent, a place to do small repairs and the storage space to park the bikes It is designed as an urban piece of furniture Two other modules will be placed near the station of Eusko Tren in Lugaritz and Amara and the fourth one near the Northern Renfe train station The title of the project is a word game, a mix between the Bask words 'mugitu' (to move) and 'bizikleta' (bicycle) photo: Mieke Vullings Koldo Telleria Diputación Foral de Gipuzkoa + Eusko Tren + Gureak MI_MOA 7

8 photo: Mieke Vullings Building Ignacio Maria Barriola Plaza de Elhuyar San Sebastián This is the social services building for the University of the Basque Country It's situated in the centre of the campus and functions as a multi-purpose building, with offices, a central lecture room, auditorium, classes, cafeteria, canteen and exposition space The organisational clarity of the building goes beyond its external image, and is presented with powerful volumes The building is a semi-public space, with the lobbies dominating as university meeting spaces, a three-storey agora, hierarchically structured The building is open to the south, where the campus has a central green area, and closed to the north, facing the street Inside classes are organised along the street façade, to keep a broad and spacious area towards the south, where the corridor and stairs form an open informal meeting area The corridor opens up to the outside balcony The building is constructed with post-tensioned floor slabs which reach a transverse span of 11,5m with a thickness of 30 cm Floor area/size m² JAAM architecture partnership University of the Basque Country MI_MOA photo: Mieke Vullings 8

9 Plaza del Tenis Paseo de Eduardo Chillida San Sebastián Located at the western end of the boulevard that runs along 'La Concha', the bay in San Sebastian, the sculptures of Basque artist Chillida are placed next to the Plaza del Tenis The place is the beginning and the end of the city, it is a symbol of the union of the city with nature In a city that ends in a way, that is the sea The square is situated next to a Tenis Club, hence the name The public space is designed by local architect Luis Peña Ganchegui: "I looked for a similar treatment of both ends of the horseshoe de la Concha, at least in concept engineering of the city, an architectural engineering that is Where the stone is treated by the beds of architectural form, as blocks of a Renaissance palace As for the material, I choose the pink granite walls in Porriño A unique element, the cobbles of fixed and variable length section, it provides the unity of material and guarantees that the number of shares within the scale of sculptures " 1975, Landscape architect Luis Peña Ganchegui hansbrinker City of Donostia 9

10 Plaza de la Trinidad Calle 31 de Agosto San Sebastián This is an interesting open space situated between the apse of San Telmo church, the Church of Santa Maria, Mount Urgull and 31 de Agosto street It is located on one of the oldest sites in the city, and houses the local pelote field (Jai Alai ball sport), and is often used for festivals, sports and concerts The new space was created to coincide with the hundredth anniversary of the demolition of the city walls and was the beginning of a series of works by the architect for public areas, such as the square of Peine del Viento "The project shows a collection of partial solutions from unions and meetings that seem to be there earlier as a natural and logical evolution of what they called this place" The mountain ending in a stone tribune and the wall of the sporting field provide a natural link between the buildings that surround the square The new extension of neighbouring San Telmo museum will connect to the square too 1961 Luis Peña Ganchegui City of Donostia Naomi 24/7 From the Boulevard (where busses stop), walk towards the mountain, and look for the square, opening up to the Calle 31 de Agosto 10

11 El real club Nautico Calle de Ijentea San Sebastián One of the most representative buildings of rationalism is the Real Club Náutico which is located in the vicinity of the port, rounds off the Paseo de la Concha attached to the wall of the coastline It is clearly inspired by the naval architecture, resembling in form a stranded boat It was built by integrating the existing building, which today is, in part, its ground floor The roof of the building was first used as a terrace on which stood a small wooden building of mahogany plywood ( "La Bombonera") which was also integrated into the first floor Its current state presents some extensions in relation to the original draft 1929 Main designer, Joaquin Labayen José Manuel Aizpurua Naomi tel:

13 NanoPhysics Lab Nanogune Tolosa Hiribidea San Sebastián This beige looking lab is located next to one of the city entry roads, near the university It has an industrial use yet it s an institutional sediment It s also a building boundary between the urban and nature: it starts at the 'asphalt' but is behind the foothills of mount Igueldo With an urban presence and s base of basalt and glass which gives it an air of "pedestal" The Nanogune consists of a tower of 6 storeys and 6 boxes, has an area of 6,000 sqm and is covered with a "skin" that gives it a gray or golden shine The building has a bioclimatic façade, "a kind of thermal quilt" in the words of the architect Exterior esthetics are important to fit the landscape, in the interior a complicated system of protection is required The most impecible one is the 'clean room', devoted to research and where "not a speck of dust" can enter Both this room and the basement laboratories are built in a tight space, isolated from any vibration, electromagnetic interference, noise and dirt Project is not public! 14 Cultural Centre Aiete Park Paseo de Aiete San Sebastián This is a culture and Human Rights Institute located in the monumental "Aiete Park" The project involves the rehabilitation of Aiete Palace and the construction of a new building, half buried, placed in the yard The neo-classical palace was for many years, the place of residence for royalty and the nobility During his reign as a dictator, Francisco Franco chose it as his summer residence The symbolism of it being recovered for democratic society is therefore immense The new building houses the main uses of cultural facilities Socket is a roof garden, a building deliberately abstract that does not come into competition with the figurative language of the Palace It has half-buried in the platforms of the north side, joining them and maintaining the configuration of this part of the garden: the relationship with the city palace and the relationship with the park through the existing platform structure Isuuru City of Donostia-San sebastián NGHM Phone number: (00 34) casadelapaz@donostiaorg,bakearenetxea@donostiaorg Timetable: 11:00-13:30 and 16:00-20:00 City buses to Aiete: 19 Aiete, 23 Errondo, 31 Intxaurrondo-Hospitales-Altza, 35 Arriola-Antiguo-Aiete-Hospitales There aren t many parking areas close to the House of Peace and Human Rigths Centre, so we recommend you to use the public transport 14

15 Basque Culinary Centre Calle de Intxaurdegi San Sebastián The Culinary centre, located in Gastronomic City San Sebastián will have a Faculty of Gastronomic and Culinary Sciences and a Research and Innovation Centre, led by the worlds best cooks Local architecture office Vaumm, won the design competition and presented a building that projects an emphatic, innovating, suggestive and daring image whilst also attempting to integrate it into the hillside respectfully With using the existing height difference, the programme is organised from the access point downwards Its organisation around an external space, centring relations, shows the dynamism flow of movement of people The volume refers to a pile of stacked plates The project shows the parallel between gastronomy and architecture, as both chefs and architects produce their work for others, giving support to other people's enjoyment The roofs are used for the care and cultivation of plants used in the centre's kitchens 2011 VAUMM vaumm The building will be finished near autumn of 2011 Phone info@bculinarycom 15
