2 Dear Participants We are very happy to welcome you in Zurich for the 5th Annual Conference of the Society for the History of Recent Social Science. Below you find some information that should help you to plan your trip. We included information about the venue, about your options of transportation to and in Zurich, as well as a list of selected hotels. Note that the first holding of a Formula E race in Zurich coincides with our conference. It is therefore important that you book a hotel as soon as possible; there will be a lot of visitors coming to Zurich and the hotel prices will therefore be even higher than usual. Also note that the prices below are an indication; they might not always apply (e.g., Thursday nights are cheaper than Saturday nights). Therefore, be sure to book your hotel as soon as possible. 3 Venue Center for Ethics, University of Zurich The conference takes place at the Center for Ethics, Zollikerstrasse 117, 8008 Zurich. You can find further information about the venue on the Center s website: Close to the Center for Ethics is the Botanical Garden. It is nice to go for a walk there; they also have a cafeteria. Most trains to the city center will stop at the main station. The train ride takes about 15 minutes.

5 From the airport (A) to the main station (B) When you arrive at the airport, the best way to get to the city center is the train. It goes directly to the main train station (called Zürich HB, which stands for Hauptbahnhof ). At the airport, you find signs to the trains; the platform is on the lowest floor. Most trains to the city center will stop at the main station. The train ride takes about 15 minutes. You should be able to find your best connections on google maps or on the website of the company: At the main station: From the platform (B) to the tram (C) Platform Tram 4 at Bahnhofquai Station Street The stops of the different tram lines are located in distinct locations around the main station (see picture above). From the tram at the main station (C) to the conference venue (D) If you want to go directly to the conference venue, you take tram 4 from the main station (direction of Zürich, Tiefenbrunnen ). You step off the tram at Höschgasse. From there, it is about a seven-minute walk to the venue. 5

You find public transport information (e.g., about fares and schedules) here: You will have to buy a special ticket from the airport to the city center. In case you want to travel around in the city, you can buy day passes ( Tageskarten ) for the zone 110, the city center. The cost of a day pass is 8.80 CHF per 24 hours. You can use all kinds of public transport (i.e., tram, bus, ferry with an extra fee). The city center and our venue are located in the city center zone. 6

Hotels in district Seefeld The conference takes place at the Center for Ethics. The Center is located in Seefeld, a district of Zurich on the east side of the upper Lake Zurich.

Note that indicated price ranges can change, depending on when and where you book. It is sometimes advisable to call the hotels in order to make sure you get the lowest rate. 1.

Room prices start at 170 CHF for single and double rooms. There is one single room you can get for 120 CHF, but you share toilet and shower with everyone on the floor.

7 Hotels in district Seefeld The conference takes place at the Center for Ethics. The Center is located in Seefeld, a district of Zurich on the east side of the upper Lake Zurich. The following list of hotels are within walking distance of the conference venue. They are ranked from the lowest to the highest price category. Note that indicated price ranges can change, depending on when and where you book. It is sometimes advisable to call the hotels in order to make sure you get the lowest rate. 1. Aparthotel Familie Hugenschmidt From this quiet location near the Lake of Zurich you should be able to reach the conference venue in 7 minutes. Room prices start at 170 CHF for single and double rooms. There is one single room you can get for 120 CHF, but you share toilet and shower with everyone on the floor. Breakfast is not included but there are two bakeries around the corner. From the main station, you can get to the hotel in 20 minutes by public transport (with tram 4 to Fröhlichstrasse and a walk of about 50 meters). The way from the airport to the hotel takes about 40 minutes (you best take a train to the main station and then take tram 4). Homepage: Address: Karlstrasse 5, 8008 Zürich 2. Hotel Nimo We were able to negotiate lower rates with the hotel. If you mention in the booking process that you participate in the HISRESS conference you will be able to benefit from them. A single room is available for ca. 180 CHF and a double room for ca. 250 CHF. (Those rooms face the street. There is also a single or double room facing the backyard available for 220 and up to 260 CHF). A breakfast buffet is included. Walking to the conference venue takes around 15 minutes. From the main station it is between 6 minutes (take the train to Stadelhofen and walk for 350 meters) and 12 minutes (take the tram 4 until the station Kreuzstrasse and walk for 100 meters) to the hotel. 3. Lady s first design hotel Despite of its name, guests of any gender are welcome in this hotel. 1 You can walk to the conference venue in 15 minutes.

You can book them under the code HISRESS-Konferenz on a first-come-first-serve basis. You can reach the hotel from the main station within 15 minutes (take tram 4 to Feldeggstrasse and walk ca.

Breakfast is excluded, but can be ordered for 23 CHF per person if pre-booked online. To benefit from the special prices, you have to refer to HISRESS in the booking process.

8 3. Lady s first design hotel Despite of its name, guests of any gender are welcome in this hotel. 1 You can walk to the conference venue in 15 minutes. The price for a single room or double room starts at 205 CHF. Breakfast is not included. We have blocked three of those rooms for you. You can book them under the code HISRESS-Konferenz on a first-come-first-serve basis. You can reach the hotel from the main station within 15 minutes (take tram 4 to Feldeggstrasse and walk ca. 200 meters) and within 35 to 40 minutes from the airport (there are trains to the station Stadelhofen, from where you can walk 10 minutes to the hotel; or take tram 2 or 4 to Feldeggstrasse ). Due to an arrangement with the University of Zurich, the hotel proposes the following special prices to us: A single room is available for 208 CHF. Breakfast is excluded, but can be ordered for 23 CHF per person if pre-booked online. To benefit from the special prices, you have to refer to HISRESS in the booking process. The hotel is within 17 walking minutes from the conference venue, 6 minutes from the main station and half an hour from the airport (for both, take the train to Stadelhofen and walk 350 meters). Homepage: Address: Dufourstrasse 5, 8008 Zürich 1 What the name is really about: The hotel management wants to give opportunities for mentally or cognitively impaired women to re-enter the job market and offers 12 fully guided jobs for them. The wellness area is open to women only. 8

Hotels in the City Center The following hotels are located in the city center. From the airport, you can reach all of them within 30 minutes (always take a train to the main station).

The conference venue is reachable from all those hotels within 15 to 25 minutes (the best way to get the connections is via google maps).

Hotel Platzhirsch Price: Due to special rates for the university, the lowest price for a single room is 110 CHF and 200 CHF for a double room.

Just mention that you take part at the HISRESS conference when you book (again, first-come-first-serve basis). Arrival main station: 10-minute walk from main station to the hotel.

9 Hotels in the City Center The following hotels are located in the city center. From the airport, you can reach all of them within 30 minutes (always take a train to the main station). Many of them are within walking distance from the main station. The conference venue is reachable from all those hotels within 15 to 25 minutes (the best way to get the connections is via google maps). The following eight suggestions for hotels rank from the lowest to highest price category. 5. Hotel Platzhirsch Price: Due to special rates for the university, the lowest price for a single room is 110 CHF and 200 CHF for a double room. We have blocked two single rooms and one double room for you until the 25 th of April. Just mention that you take part at the HISRESS conference when you book (again, first-come-first-serve basis).
