It is included in the all-inclusive rates but you will have to pay it on completion of your hire. The fee is calculated on the number of kms you drive during your hire. You then pay a fee per kms. It only applies to diesel vehicles. Petrol vehicles are exempt. The main collection cities for hiring a campervan are Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown. Wellington used to be one of the main centres but now only a few operators hire from here. You can also hire from Blenheim, Dunedin, Greymouth, Hamilton, Nelson, Picton, Tauranga, Thames and Whitianga but the choice of vehicles are limited and location fees apply. If you hire in the South Island and take the vehicle on the ferry and return it to Auckland or vice versa you can really maximise your time in New Zealand. One way fees may apply but you won t have to pay for two ferry crossings. The choice of who to hire from in New Zealand has been specially selected by us. We only hire from companies that have been in business for a reasonable length of time and have a large enough fleet so that in the event of a replacement vehicle needed then they have one. We also highlight safety and require all vehicles to be strict on high safety standards. Budget campervans and motorhomes are generally older and so they are cheaper to hire. The insurance is also cheaper. But, you can get newer vehicles if you book early. Flex rates are used by many New Zealand companies. This means that as the motorhomes are booked the price goes up. So that the nearer to the date of pick up the more expensive it becomes. Book early to get cheaper hire rates. These are the companies we feature on our website. The smaller camping cars are the cheapest, then the low tops, then hi-top. If you add a shower and toilet then the price goes up but you do have the ability to freedom camp (wild camp or boon docking) in fully contained vehicles. There are 2-berths, 3-berth, 4-berth, 5-berth and 6-berth vehicles for hire in New Zealand. The quality does vary and so does the price. There are a limited number of 7-berths for hire. All vehicles from the camping car to the large 6-berth motorhomes have cooking facilities and somewhere to keep food. This can be anything from a cool box (esky) to a large fridge with small freezer. You will want to save costs where you can. These are our top tips: Pick up and drop off in the same location if you are going to hire for less than 21 days to save on one-way fees. Hire for one-way to save backtracking and you will only have to pay for one ferry crossing. Hire for over 21 days to avoid a one-way fee (in most cases) Book all inclusive if you are on a very long hire as the road user charges will be costly on a long hire where you are covering a high number of kms. Book a self-contained vehicle so you can save on camp-site fees by free-camping. You can still freedom camp in New Zealand but you need to be self-contained with on board facilities and to ensure that waste water and waste is disposed at dump stations. You may find that your own travel insurance provider will cover the insurance excess on your vehicle. Check before you hire. You could save money. We advise taking full cover insurance in New Zealand as it is not compulsory for drivers to have their own insurance. You have to be 21 years old and hold a credit card to hire in New Zealand.
