1 New Reflections on Grammaticalization 5 Edinburgh, July th 2012 Second circular This circular provides some more information about the timing and location of NRG5, some information about travel, information about the social programme, and some suggestions regarding accommodation. A final circular will be sent out at the beginning of July with further practical information, but please do not hesitate to contact Graeme Trousdale (graeme.trousdale@ed.ac.uk) if you have any questions about the conference. Timing Registration and conference opening Registration for the conference will open at 8.30am on Monday 16 th July. There will be a short welcome at 9.45am and the first plenary will be at 10am on that day. Closing The final session (a plenary paper) will take place between 12 and 1 on Thursday 19 th July. Location The conference will be held in the David Hume Tower of the University of Edinburgh (with plenary papers being given in a nearby lecture hall). The David Hume Tower is building 34 on the map on page 3 of this document: Travel For most people, travelling to the conference will involve either flying or getting the train to Edinburgh and then either walking or getting a bus or a taxi to the conference venue or your accommodation. The main train station (called Waverley Station) is a good orientation point - it is situated right in the centre of the city, between the New Town and the Old Town, just next to Princes Street (Princes Street is the main central shopping street in Edinburgh), and there are normally lots of taxis available there. This section contains details of how to get to the centre of town from the airport and of how to get to the conference venue from the station. Travel from Edinburgh Airport into central Edinburgh Edinburgh Airport is quite large, with a fair number of direct flights, especially from Europe, and with excellent connections to Heathrow and other major hub airports in Britain and continental Europe. However, given that the Olympics will begin in London about a week after the conference starts, you may find that travelling via London is expensive. 2 It is easy to get from the airport to the centre of town, using the very frequent, fast, comfortable and safe dedicated bus service (Airbus 100), which takes about 30 minutes, and currently costs 6 for a return ticket, and 3.50 for a single ticket. However, there is ongoing construction work in the centre of Edinburgh as the new tram system is developed, so there may be some delay to the service. Details of the service, including a timetable, can be found at The last stop on this bus journey will leave you right in the heart of Edinburgh - opposite Waverley train station. Another bus, service 35, is even cheaper (currently 1.40 for a single ticket), but takes longer to get to the city centre (about an hour). It stops near the university (you should get off at Forrest Road), about 5 minutes walk from the conference venue. You can find details about this service at your- bus/timetables/819- service- 35.html You could also take a taxi from the airport into Edinburgh - a typical journey time to the city centre takes around 25 minutes by taxi and fares vary according to the distance travelled and time of day, but a typical cost will be no less than 20. Travel from the centre of Edinburgh to the university The main train station in Edinburgh is Waverley Station. You can find information about train times to and from Edinburgh and book tickets online, with a credit card, at If you want to go to the conference venue in the David Hume Tower, off George Square, after you arrive in Edinburgh, you could take a taxi from the station taxi rank, or you could take a bus, or if you like to walk, it would take around 15 minutes. Given the disruption caused by the construction of the new tram system, we will only be able to provide accurate information regarding bus services when we send the final circular at the beginning of July. Registration and social programme The following social activities have been arranged: Monday 16 th July: Opening reception (free) Tuesday 17 th July: Conference dinner. The conference dinner will be held in the Playfair Library of the University s Old College ( 35) Wednesday 18 th July: Evening walking tour of Edinburgh ( 10) Thursday 19 th July: Walk up Arthur s Seat (fairly strenuous!) or around the Botanical Gardens (not at all strenuous!) Friday 20 th July: Post- conference trip to a local whiskey distillery ( 15)
