However, if the licence document is not in the English language, you must carry an official translation with the permit, or an International Driving Permit. Generally, international drivers licence for visitors to Sydney can be used for driving cars in Sydney if you do not intend to stay in New South Wales (NSW) and do not hold a permanent visa as this makes you a visiting driver. It is easily accessible by all modes of transport including car, train, taxi or bus. You can also take an airport shuttle bus to the city which costs around AUD $13 per person. Ask for the direction upon arrival at the information desk. The main bus terminals are located at Circular Quay, Wynyard, Town Hall and Central Station (Railway Square). Fares depend upon the number of 'sections' you pass through. As a rough guide, short trips within the city and to the inner suburbs will cost you between $1.90 (1 to 2 sections) and $4.20 if you pay cash to buy the tickets. However, if you purchase a TravelTen ticket which is good for 10 trips, it can save you 20% on the bus fare. For instance, if you pay cash for a short trip (1 to 2 sections), it will cost you $1.90 for the bus ticket but it is only $1.52 per trip on TravelTen. George Street, Sydney For your information, George Street is the Sydney CBD's main north-south thoroughfare with public buses plying along late into the night. Located at 75 King Street (Level 8) in Sydney, is easily accessed by public buses, trains and monorail. In fact, we are just two doors away from a bus stop on George Street. Please note that overseas students need to pay full fares. If you intend to travel frequently on buses, you are advised to buy weekly tickets or TravelTen tickets which provide some attractive 20% discounts. 5 PrePay-only Buses We would like to advise our students that PrePay-only boarding of bus services is being introduced throughout the Sydney CBD from March PrePay simply means purchasing a ticket before boarding the bus. PrePay-only buses do not sell cash fares on board between 7.00 am and 7.00 pm from Monday to Friday, and customers must use a pre-purchased ticket to use these services. There are close to 900 ticket agents in Sydney, including newsagents, 7-elevens and convenience stores. Tickets are also available from Sydney Buses' Transit Shops, CityRail train stations and Sydney Ferries wharves. Free CBD Shuttle The CBD shuttle (Route 555) will get you around the City for shopping, business or to connect with other transport. It s frequent and it s free. The shuttle operates every 10 minutes in both directions between 9.30 am and 3.30 pm on weekdays (until 9.00 pm on Thursday nights) and between 9.30 am and 6.00 pm on weekends. The CBD shuttle connects with rail, bus, metrobus, ferries, light rail and the monorail. You can travel around the City centre on the City Circle Line (Circular Quay, Wynyard, Town Hall, Central, Museum and St James Stations). There is also a station at Martin Place. Return (two-way) train tickets are cheaper after 9:00 am. Weekly and fortnightly tickets are cheaper (per ride) than buying a ticket every day. City Rail services begin around 4.00 am am in the morning and run till around midnight (later at some stations). After midnight, NightRide bus services operate in the Sydney suburban area. There is a minimum charge on hiring and then a charge per kilometre travelled. Metered taxicabs operate in Sydney and they charge Town Hall, next to QVB on George Street a flag fall of $3.10 for the service and from $1.85 per kilometre travelled. You need to add 20% if you travel on a taxi between 10 pm and 6 am. This price also increases depending on the amount of time taken to travel. If you take a taxi on a toll-way, you will have to pay the toll for the forward and return journey. Note that taxi drivers do not have to be tipped. The monorail leaves every 3-5 minutes and takes approximately 15 minutes to do the circuit. Single trips or day passes can be purchased at every station. Modern trams run from historic Central Station through vibrant Chinatown and Darling Harbour to the Star City Casino, the Sydney Fish Markets and Wentworth Park 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
