Hopefully the June Gloom will give way to a glorious July. Don t miss out on the events planned at the Club for the 4th of July weekend. The fun starts with the Dingy Poker Run on July 1st and ends with a great 4th of July BBQ and fireworks. The wallpaper work is over and the bar area looks refreshed. The burgees have been cleaned and look better than ever. The new mounting and frames for the Staff Commodore s pictures have a modern style and look really nice. Thanks go to Mark Fogel, Diana Lorentzen and Steve Nash for all your work on this project. If you didn t make it to the Lobster Feast you missed a fantastic, sold out, evening. Thank you Faye and Larry Robertson for chairing the event, Harry Meisel and Carlos Bilbao for gently cooking over 300 lobsters and all the other members that helped setup the room, cooked all the other food and served and cleaned up throughout the evening. I hope you ll take a few minutes to read the Minutes of the last BOD meeting. The Board discussed the possibility of going cashless in the bar in the future. Your opinion is important. Talk to a Flag Officer or Director to find out more and to have your opinion heard on this subject. I look forward to seeing you at the Club. 5 Vice Commodore Mike Richards I don t know what happened to June Gloom, but July should prove to be great at CBYC. We start with our annual Dingy Poker Run on Sunday, July 1st. The 4th of July falls on a Wednesday this year so join us for a 4th of July Party of ribs, chicken, baked beans, potato salad and watermelon. To top the night off, join us to watch the fireworks. As always, the Lighthouse has all of the information and particulars for everything happening at CBYC so please review it and make notes on your calendar for the things you want to do. Reservations are always appreciated. Additionally, reservations help the event host to anticipate the number of members who will participate. In the summer months, parking can be a challenge. Please be considerate of other members if you are going to be out of the Marina. Dean, our Dock Master, can direct you to the least used parking spaces. 6 Board of Directors Minutes - June 5, 2018 this event. Commodore Mike Stavros called the Board of Directors meeting to order at 19:00 hours. Roll was called and with two members excused, a quorum was declared. Gwen Butterfield, from Butterfield Communications, reported we have recently lost two prominent people associated with the Port. Philip Tondreault who managed Cabrillo Way Marina and was a long-time member of the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce and Jim Gladson, the founder of Los Angeles Maritime Institute. She also reported the San Pedro Chamber Annual Luncheon and Business Awards is scheduled for June 14 th and recommended we purchase a table for Steve Thomas, Chairman of the Membership Committee said one Associate MIP, Elizabeth Campbell, has met the requirements of membership. It was moved and seconded to approve her membership, and the motion passed. Steve stated eight other MIPs are in various stages of the membership process and the Committee is excited about this group, as they all currently have boats. Steve reported a request from a Non-Resident Family Membership wherein, as the wife can no longer use the membership, she and her husband (now deceased), wish for the membership to be passed to their grandson. There was much discussion and it was decided to table the matter. Director Kevin McCloskey will review the bylaws, have dialog with the grandson and bring his findings back to the BOD. James Dimon, member of the Los Angeles Police Department Boosters and their Junior Cadet Program for At-Risk youth, has requested use of the dining room for a Texas Hold Em Fundraiser in September for about 70 people. He is asking that the Club donate the use of the room. While further research is done with the ABC regarding any possible impact on our Liquor License, it was moved and seconded to tentatively approve the request. The motion passed. James then requested use of the room for a fundraiser for about 80 people for Congresswoman Nanette Barragan, 44th District, on July 20 th. A motion was made to donate the dining room for the fundraiser. The motion was seconded and passed. S/C Diana Lorentzen came to the Board representing the Aesthetics Committee, which works in conjunction with the House Committee. She stated that the wallpapering is done and the Staff Commodore wall is nearly complete. She then presented a list of items she wanted the Board to consider. She found a brass plaque that stated, Cell Phone use within the clubhouse is not allowed and asked whether it should be posted. The BOD found the plaque unnecessary, as most are very courteous and step outside for cell phone usage. There were bags of linens left in the Junior Room, and this matter will go to Vice Commodore Mike Richards for resolution. With an influx of new younger members with children, the return to a proper Junior Room is needed. She was asked to list items of concern around the Clubhouse for Vice Commodore Richards, and he will address these matters. Diana stated that the carpets had not been cleaned since 2014, but it was noted they were cleaned after the last Lobster Feast in 2017, when the tables were refinished. Fleet Captain Steve Holmstrom gave the Marina Management Report saying we have two 48-foot slips and one 40-foot slip available. All dry storage slips are full and the commercial building is completely full. It was noted the Port Police have been seen out of their cars on foot patrol and bicycles around the marina. We appreciate the additional security measures. 6 Visit us online at cbyc.org Copyright 2018 Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club, San Pedro CA

7 Treasurer Aaron Feves ed the Profit & Loss Budget vs Actual for the Club and the Landing to the Board and Secretary Karen Perrault ed the May BOD Minutes to all members. An error was noted and corrected. A motion and second were made to approve the Minutes as corrected, which passed. Fleet Captain Holmstrom said the Chili and Rib Cook-Off and Auction for the Youth Foundation were a big success and he thanks all who participated. There were 13 Chili chefs and 5 Rib chefs, serving 75 people. Laurie Holmstrom organized the auction, M Liz Callender and Cheryl Thomas helped with everything. Bob and Pauline Falstrom helped set up for the evening. This event helped raise $20,000 in Golden Scholarships to the local schools, Air Force Base and Aquarium of the Pacific. Commodore Stavros said the Treasurer sent a list of members whose 2018 dues are unpaid. These members are subject to termination. One member was removed from the list. A motion was made and seconded to terminate all non-paying members from the list. The motion passed. Rear Commodore Katinszky says the Wet Wednesdays are very successful. Twenty boats participated in the Around Catalina to Dana Point race. The Avalon Cruise, hosted by the Embrees, had twelve boats. June 8-10 will be the Isthmus Cruise and there are three cruises scheduled for July. July 1 st is the Dinghy Poker Run, the th is the Emerald Bay Cruise and following is the Cat Harbor Cruise, July Junior Staff Commodore M Liz Callender reminded all that there would be no General Meeting in June, as we will have Lobster Feast on June 23 rd. Commodore Stavros said that Vice Commodore Richards had concerns about eliminating all posters from the lobby area of the club and there was discussion regarding when posters might still be appropriate. A motion was presented providing for approval of posters at the discretion of the Vice Commodore as to the number and placement. The motion passed unanimously. There was discussion of the Marlin that was removed from the bar and it was determined that it could return while allowing additional burgees to be placed below or around it. A motion was made to replace the Marlin. The was a second and the motion passed. It was moved and seconded to approve the sale of three Catalina pictures for $225 and it was moved and seconded to dispose of two chairs in ill repair. Both motions passed. A motion to purchase glare-reducing shades was withdrawn for further research on the matter. Commodore Stavros said the next Fleet Week meeting is June 20 th, and he and Director Abernatha will attend. There was discussion concerning the Chamber of Commerce luncheon on June 14 th, and it was determined that CBYC should buy a table. The Commodore will contact attendees. Director John Stillo stated he spoke with Tony Johansing concerning our insurance coverage and he felt they were appropriate. It was suggested that Director Stillo meet with the Marina Management Committee to discuss the need for regularly updated proof of insurance for the lessees and ensuring that CBYC is listed as an Additional Insured on their policies. Rear Commodore Katinszky said that he looked into improving our DirecTV contract, but there is no other service available to us, so we will have to remain with them. DirecTV offered to update our equipment, which will require a two-year commitment. Commodore Stavros said our POS system is eight years old, and we paid about $27K for it at that time. It has been crashing and the explanation we receive is that it is old. The Aloha System was investigated but was found to be too extensive. We are now looking into a TAI system. It was estimated that we would need a minimum of $20K to replace our system. There was discussion of eliminating all cash transactions at the club. Director John Stillo pointed out that we are required to keep $400K in the bank (not in a CD) to qualify for free armored car service for our cash. If we eliminated cash, we could put half of that money in a CD and earn about four thousand dollars per annum (twenty thousand dollars over five years), thus paying for a new POS system in five years. The BOD agreed that we need further research into a new POS system and to evaluate whether CBYC could go cashless. There being no further business before the Board, Commodore Stavros adjourned this meeting at 20:53 hours, and went onto Executive Session. These Minutes are respectfully submitted by Secretary, Karen Perrault. Visit us online at cbyc.org Copyright 2018 Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club, San Pedro CA 7

8 8 MEMBERS IN PROCESS Please intoduce yourself to our MIPs if you see them around the Club, make them feel welcome. Nick & Debbie Sampson Nick and Debbie Sampson moved to California from the UK eight years ago. Nick, a keen sailor since the age of 9, moved to the US to work for Tesla and more recently set up the new electric car company, Faraday Future. Nick and Debbie were active members at South Coast Corinthian Sailing Club in Marina Del Rey but their move to Palos Verdes and Nick s commitment to work led them to look for a club nearer to home. Both served as officers; Debbie was their Social Chair for three years and Nick climbed the ladder to Commodore. Nick enjoys social sailing and racing and has raced on all sized boats from his C15 up to 50ft and Debbie prefers not to spill her wine! Terry & Becky Klein We have both lived in the Los Angeles area (San Gabriel Valley) all of our lives. We do not have any children, just parrots that act like children! Terry, retired in 2016, was in the beer industry the majority of his working career and started sailing in 1974 with Toby and Stan Lewis at the old Holiday Harbor Marina, has crewed on NEFERTITI for hundreds of races and is also a current member of Buccaneer YC. Becky, who worked with special needs kids the bulk of her career started sailing with her grandfather Toby in the 70 s, also crewed on NEFERTITI from time to time and was a guest at various yacht club events. Terry is primarily interested in participating in racing events while both of us look forward to being CBYC members and socializing with long time members we already know and new ones we ve yet to meet. Clyde & Kathleen Foss Clyde and Kathy Foss met while attending CSULB and married in Kathy is a retired public and school librarian and a mountain and horse person who married an ocean and fishing person. They have two sons and three grandchildren. Clyde is trying to retire after 43 years of owning his own construction company. Clyde s love of boats began on the Colorado River with the purchase of a used flat bottom racing boat and expanded over the years to several sailboats and powerboats, now winnowed down to a 30 ft. Striper and a 48 ft. Riviera in which he wants to cruise the Gulf of California and then the Alaskan Inland Passage as well as Club activities and cruising events. Randy Wood Randee Wood is a third generation Angeleno returning to the peninsula after an extensive career working in the field of Medical Technology services, applications and research. Growing up in LA, we always had a boat in the family, states Randee. She never thought of being a Captain until retirement, when she purchased her first boat. Currently, Randee participates with Southern California Cruiser Association (SCCA) in Navigation Rally Events (Predicted Logging) and looks forward to representing CBYC in the future while learning more skipper skills as an active member. David Seltzer David grew up in the SF Bay area but has been in San Pedro for 30 years. An Engine grad out of Cal Maritime, over his career he has worked in every different engineering capacity and on almost every type of oceangoing vessel. He is now retired. David has two grown daughters, Anna and Eva, who live close by. Outside of a sail aboard a Cal20 at a very young age and a couple of simple day sails along the way, he is just beginning to sail and has made it his retirement job to become proficient in all aspects of sailing and seamanship so he can one day realize his dream of going offshore. Recently he has been enjoying Wet Wednesdays, again on Cal20s. David enjoys helping however and whenever he can and looks forward his membership at CBYC as an opportunity to share this with like-minded people. 9 On Saturday, June 2, 2018 at 7:17PM, Joe left us for a long journey across the seas. He was finally with no pain and his family spent his last 7 hours with him. As friends of ours, you know Joe has had problems since he was 35 years old and developed more problems when he became a diabetic and then stage 5 kidney failure. He also had a problem with his heart. He never complained about his illness, but continually gave time and energy to paying back the sailing community and working with our children and grandchildren on things they wanted to do. He was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, the first of his family to be born in a hospital. He lived in Secaucus, New Jersey, with his Dad & Mom and 3 sisters. Was a Boy Scout, hunted with his uncles and Dad. Graduated from Weehawken High School, got his Bachelor s Degree in Accounting, with honors, from Fairleigh Dickinson University. While there, he met Toni and his life changed - he fell in love. After graduation he went to work, starting his career in New York City. Fredrick S. The sandy bottom mixed with the rock formations, kelp and other sea flora makes Emerald Bay ( EB ) a world-renowned spot for diving, snorkeling and sport fishing. NOTE: First time cruisers to EB please review your charts carefully. There is a submerged reef on the West side of the large entrance rock. Corsair Yacht Club advises the safest approach is to enter the harbor with Indian Rock (the big rock) to your Starboard side. 11 July Cruisers Corner By Jim Clark, Cruising Committee We had one cruise in June and it was a big one! All the cruisers and I send our thanks our hosts: John/Bridgett Stillo, Scott/Regina Huston, and Harry/Sonia for a job well done. Although I was unable to attend (bronchitis), all reports are that it was a lot of fun with close to 20 boats in attendance. Cat Harbor Cruise Another cruise hosted by I have already started planning for the 2019 Out of Area Cruise. Considering the devastation of hurricane Irma and Maria in the Caribbean, I would like to suggest that we take our tourist Jeff and Kathy Embree, so you know that this will be a really fun cruise. Please put it on your calendars for July 27 ~ 29. August: Family Cruise Although this is not a cruise planned or hosted by the Cruising Group, I would like to promote it. Hosted by the Social Committee, Family Cruise 2018 is to be held in Cat Harbor at the Del Rey YC facility, August 10 ~ 12. The Del Rey facility is located on the east side of the cove. dollars to that area, specifically the US Virgin Islands and Spanish Virgin Islands (US Territory). They could really use our money and from what I ve discovered so far, the Spanish Virgin Islands are amazingly beautiful. I ve yet to determine a charter company, but there are many that charter out of the east coast of Puerto Rico or out of St. Thomas. Either way, the Spanish Virgin Islands are midway between and about 20 mi. away. It would be like to trip over to Catalina in distance. Out of Area Cruise (Gulf Islands Canada) So far, we have 6 boats signed up and plenty of room for more. I have negotiated discounts from Anacortes Yacht Charters for any of their boats. This area of the Pacific Northwest is absolutely beautiful! One can choose to go to the more rugged and scenic islands or Upcoming Cruises: July: Dinghy Poker Run Hosted by Sherry Brehm, this is shaping up to be a wonderful Poker Run on Sunday July 1 st. Fun, Fun, Fun! Don t miss it! if you want a nice meal ashore, get a slip for the night in one of the many harbors. This is a chance in a lifetime. This will take place on August 25 ~ 31. 17 View from the Dock & Yard The Lighthouse, July 2018 (Sales Tax Included in All Prices) Security. I m told personal security is influenced by personal awareness. Please keep a Head s Up attitude and look where you are going and note who is around you. We are here to help. We try to make a safe place for you by having staff onsite each day, cameras on our property, and members around each day. The Port Police are here to help as well. They patrol the streets and waterways around us. Recently, the Port Police has also run bicycle teams through our area which have been great and we appreciate them. Your efforts to keep your anchors off the docks, toys put away, and know your neighbors helps a great deal as well. Wet Wednesday Racing is in full bloom. The hoists and marina are busy from 5 to 7 each Wednesday so please keep that in mind if you are planning a journey of your own that day. Summer Sailing has started as well, so get your kids and grandkids signed up early. The Juniors leave the dock around 9 am, hit the dock around noon, and leave again at 1 pm. They take about 15 minutes to get out of your way so please plan around them. Have fun! Acting Chair, Marina Management Committee S/C John O Connor Did you Miss Out on the Isthmus Cove Cruise? The weather for the June 8-10 Isthmus Cruise was perfect! Over 50 Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club members sailed /motored to the island to bask in the breeze and take part in the activities. Friday night everyone climbed aboard Harry Prouty s 100 foot yacht to enjoy great food and great company in a beautiful setting! The Stillos Mai Tais were a big hit. Thank you to Harry and Sonja for hosting us! Saturday saw many take part in a 5.2 mile hike with beautiful views and ocean breezes led by John and Bridget. Gene and Joyce Koehler helped set up for the Fleet 24 Saturday night cocktail party and delivered delicious Daiquiris. Thank you to the Koehlers! Saturday night concluded with 40 club members enjoying dinner at the Harbor Reef Restaurant. Thank you to the Stillos and Hustons for hosting! 19 Hey folks, The Lighthouse, July 2018 A Note from the Aesthetics and House Committee The Aesthetics Committee and the House Committee want to take this opportunity to thank the membership for their patience during the removal and installation of the new wallcovering in the clubhouse. Throughout this long, overdue endeavor, you might have noticed a reorganization of the wall decor around the club. In an attempt to improve our club s lower foyer appearance, and for the safety of our staff, the large event poster boards have been eliminated. The outside event bulletin boards, the three digital displays in the lower foyer and the upper foyer and the bar, the marina gate postings, and more than the weekly blasts will continue to advertise the current and upcoming events. Sign-up sheets can still be found on the shelf to the left beyond the lower foyer arch. The name badge board has been restored to its original place just beyond the arch to the right of the lower foyer arch. The Staff Commodore photo wall takes on a new contemporary look with room for addition photos long into the future. Thanks go to Jib and Kim Kelly, who took on the task of scanning every Staff Commodore photo; we now have a permanent, digital record. And thank you Steve and Dell Nash who removed, hand washed, sun dried, and rehung our wonderful display of nearly four hundred yacht club burgees from around the world. Slowly and methodically, items pertinent to the club are again displayed throughout the clubhouse, while a few may have been retired. During this reorganization, the Junior Room was relegated to a temporary storage room, but that is no longer the case. We appreciate your understanding. Please know that the juniors have their space back and that we will endeavor to maintain their space as it has been designated. If you notice any infraction of this, please speak up and report it. Thank you for your patience in our endeavor of bringing the clubhouse appearance back to one that you will be proud of. The Adventures of CBYC Member, Tim Noyes I left there in May of last year and the time has flown. I sailed down through the Marquesas Islands, the Tuamotu Atolls, Tahiti, Raiatea, Bora Bora, American Samoa, Fiji and New Caledonia and landed in Australia at the end of October. I then went south to the Sydney, Pittwater area and spent the summer out of the cyclone path up North. I am now headed back up through Queensland with the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsunday Islands to visit before I head up to Southeast Asia. Near the South end of the reef I found a wonderful little yacht club and we did a Burgee exchange. The club is the Capricornia Cruising Yacht Club. Like us, they have an active junior sailing program and a very good adult program to teach the older folks how to sail and race. According to Rear Commodore Greg Thomasson (pictured with me), they also had two members on Jimmy Spithill s Americas Cup team in San Francisco. 145 John Howes Drive Rosslyn Bay, Queensland, Australia Their club name comes from the fact that they are located on the Capricorn latitude which is the farthest South that the sun can be directly overhead. This part of the coast inside the reef is called the Capricornia Coast. Their web site is and on Facebook they are Capricornia Cruising Yacht Club. I will try to keep you updated on my trip but I m having so much fun I forget to write. This trip is truly a blast. My best to everyone at the Club, Tim Noyes S/V Marea Visit us online at cbyc.org Copyright 2018 Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club, San Pedro CA 19
