It has certainly taken a toll on our performance. A look back over last year s numbers shows that as the financial industry s problems seeped into the real economy and began to have a corrosive effect on demand, our revenues and earnings suffered. However, all the evidence suggests that the business model we put in place in the good times will allow us to outperform our competitors through the crisis and help us emerge stronger when recovery comes. That model is built on flexibility, diversification and economies of scale. In the boom years when the focus was on managing growth, we kept our discipline, ordering multi-purpose vessels that allow us to adjust the cargo mix depending on demand, and building bigger for critical markets in order to achieve better cost/earnings ratios. In recent years, the corporation successfully concluded public offers on ACL, Finnlines and Minoan Lines, each of which a leader in a strategic geographical market that slotted perfectly into the wider group. And we reinvested our profits, boosting equity and holding down debt to manageable levels in the process. The result is that even as volumes fall - cargo slipped from 1.6 million FEUs in 2008 to 1.3 million FEUs last year and cars handled from 2.8 million to 2.5 million while passengers held steady at 2.7 million - we continue to turn a healthy profit on strong revenues. Revenues were down last year from the 2.5 billion registered in 2008, but at 2.1billion, they were still more than respectable under the circumstances. The same goes for earnings. They may have fallen by more than 50% year-on-year, but we still posted 128 million in earnings last year, a solid performance in a difficult climate. Although times are still difficult due to the ongoing economic crisis, other indicators also confirm that we are battling successfully through the storm. We cut net debt last year from 2.3 billion to 2.2 billion and boosted net equity from 1.5 billion to 2.0 billion. What is more, areas of weakness last year are now becoming areas of strength, like Finnlines, which we expect to turn a profit this year after its reorganisation. And external factors are working in our favour. Having brought forward US dollars to cover the purchase of newbuildings contracted in Korea, the increase in the value of the dollar alone could translate into a benefit of roughly 100 million this year. As you will read in this issue of Grimaldi News, we are confident enough of the future that we are still investing even in the teeth of the crisis. The Marocco has just made its debut run between North America and West Africa, calling at Savannah for the first time and boosting capacity on the route for cars and containers. In the Mediterranean, the state-of-the-art cruise ferry Cruise Olympia was delivered at the end of June and has been deployed on the Ancona-Greece route operated by Minoan Lines, while the ro/ro vessel Eurocargo Genova has just started sailing between Genoa, Catania and Malta; these deployments again represent big increases in capacity. Finnlines, meanwhile, has just announced that it is extending its Bilbao-Antwerp-Helsinki service to St. Petersburg and the rich Russian market. At this stage of the game, we would say our business model is working very well indeed.

3 Atlantic network North America/West Africa Service strengthened Savannah The newbuilding Marocco replacing older tonnage while service extended to Savannah Boston New York Baltimore Jacksonville Dakar Lome Cotonou Tema Lagos Lobito With the aim to better reflect customer demands and requirements, the Grimaldi Group has proceeded with the reorganisation of its USA-West Africa Ro/Ro and container service. The first move has been the replacement of a PCTC (Pure Car & Truck Carrier) by the new multipurpose Ro/Ro vessel Marocco in order to assure a more uniform sailing frequency for container shippers from the East Coast of the U.S. The new vessel was delivered to the Group on the 30 th of April by the Hyundai Mipo Shipyards of Korea. With a length of metres, a width of metres, a gross tonnage of 47,300 tonnes and a service speed of 20 knots, the Marocco is designed to offer the maximum flexibility in terms of intake capacity and type of cargo loaded. She has an ideal cargo intake of 2,000 cars/vans, 2,000 linear metres of rolling cargo and 800 TEU and, thanks to her two cranes on the weather deck, she is able to lift units (containers and general cargo) up to 40 tonnes. The Marocco has been deployed on this service in order to ensure a 14-day frequency from New York and Baltimore in conjunction with two other conro vessels, the Repubblica di Roma and the Benin. Furthermore, as from the 4 th of July the North America West Africa service includes the new call at the port of Savannah (Georgia): owned and operated by the Georgia Ports Authority, Savannah is a strategically located port able to accommodate the demands of U.S. South Atlantic shippers of containers and any rolling cargo. The new rotation of the service will be: Jacksonville, Savannah, Baltimore, New York and Boston, while the direct calls in West Africa remain Dakar, Lomé, Cotonou, Lagos and Tema, with feedering services to Banjul, Conakry, Freetown, Monrovia, Boma, Douala, Pointe Noire, Luanda, Lobito, Takoradi, San Pedro and Abidjan. The capacity for shippers of rolling and project cargoes remains at previous levels in order to ensure that customer requirements are met, while the deployment of revised tonnage surely allows a better schedule from the U.S. ports of Jacksonville and Boston, in addition to the benefits of a fortnightly service from New York and Baltimore. 4 Fleet development Further enhancement of the Sea network in The newbuildings Cruise Olympia and Eurocargo Genova delivered to the Group The Grimaldi Group, in line with its policy of development and enhancement of the Group s Motorways of the Sea network, has recently taken delivery of two newbuildings which replace older tonnage and further strengthen its fleet in the Mediterranean. First was the cruise ferry Cruise Olympia which was delivered on the 30 th of June from the Fincantieri shipyard of Castellammare di Stabia near Naples. She was immediately deployed on the Ancona-Igoumenitsa-Patras route, operated by the Group s subsidiary Minoan Lines, alongside her twin vessel Cruise Europa which was delivered last October. The state-of-the-art Cruise Olympia is 225 metres long, 31 metres wide, has a tonnage of 54,310 tonnes and can carry 3,000 passengers, 3,000 linear metres of rolling cargo, and over 250 cars. The vessel has a service speed of 28 knots, completing the journey between Ancona, Igoumenitsa and Patras in just 22 hours. The Cruise Olympia has 413 cabins including 18 owner s suites and 50 junior suites, plus 548 reclining seats (114 of which first class), and offers on board services comparable to those of a cruise ship: à la carte and self service restaurants, a wellness and fitness area, a pleasant swimming pool and an equipped gym. Other important amenities onboard are a casino, a discotheque, a supermarket, two lounges for truck drivers, a conference centre, boutiques, an internet café and a children s playground. To underline its environmental friendliness, the ship was awarded the Green Star certificate by the Italian Ship Classification society (RINA), proving that it has been designed, built and will run Valencia Barcelona The Livorno/Valencia service extended to passengers too with a zero impact on the environment thanks to the Clean Air and Clean Sea notations. The Cruise Olympia is another example of how to successfully combine a high quality service with a low cost concept. Genoa Porto Torres Cagliari Tunis Venice Ancona Tripoli Livorno Civitavecchia Palermo Trapani Malta Salerno As from the 14 th of July, the current Livorno/Valencia service operated by the Group for the transport of rolling cargo, will be extended to passengers too, while increasing the frequency from three departures every 15 days to twice-weekly. This has been possible thanks to the deployment of the ro/pax ferry "Sorrento" (built in 2003) which has a loading capacity of 2,230 linear metres of rolling cargo and 160 cars, equal to a 20% more compared to the ro/ro ship replaced. It features also 93 cabins and 64 reclining seats and can accommodate up to 830 passengers on board. The vessel is equipped with a self-service restaurant, bars, TV room, shop and a video games corner. The deployment of the "Sorrento" opens the gate to the transport of trucks and other accompanied rolling units, between Livorno and Central Italy to the whole South of Spain. Cor Catani 4 GNE WS

5 of the Motorways the Mediterranean fu a Igoumenitsa Piraeus Patras Corinth Heraklion The new vessel will offer extremely competitive rates for rolling freight and a low cost policy for passengers, while continuing to provide onboard services similar to those of a cruise ship, and thus confirming the revolutionary vision of freight and passenger transport introduced by our Group on the route between Italy and Greece said Emanuele Grimaldi, President of Minoan Lines. The Cruise Olympia is the last of four cruise ferries built by Fincantieri for the Grimaldi Group. The first two units, the Cruise Roma and Cruise Barcelona, operate daily on the route between Civitavecchia, Porto Torres and Barcelona. Furthermore, the deployment of the new vessel enhances the advantageous Long-Bridge formula, through which transport companies can make only one reservation and buy a single discounted rate for two sea legs: Valencia-Livorno, Barcelona-Civitavecchia or Livorno, and Ancona-Igoumenitsa / Patras. Departing from Barcelona or Valencia, trucks arriving at Civitavecchia or Livorno can embark from Ancona to Greece onboard the Minoan Lines vessels. Another new state-of-the-art ro-ro vessel, the Eurocargo Genova, was delivered to the Group on the 10 th of June. The first of 10 twin vessels ordered from the Korean shipyard of Hyundai Mipo in Ulsan, the vessel is to be deployed on the Genoa-Catania-Malta route as from mid July. With a length of 200 metres, a beam of 26.5 metres and with a gross tonnage of 32,644 tonnes, the vessel can carry 3,900 linear metres of rolling cargo at a service speed of 23 knots. The Eurocargo Genova can also carry 12 passengers in six cabins and is equipped with 10 decks, two of which are hoistable. The vessel has a ramp capable of loading cargo units with a weight of up to 120 tonnes. The garage spaces are all connected by ramps fixed or mobile. Mr Guido Grimaldi, Short Sea Lines Commercial manager of Grimaldi Group stated: With this new vessel we are strengthening our Motorways of the Sea network to and from Sicily. The commitment taken by our Group for the development of efficient maritime links serving Sicilian exporters is proven with the deployment of this vessel which will increase by 70% the loading capacity of our service between Genoa, Catania and Malta, carrying up to 280 semi-trailers. In this way we can offer very competitive freight rates to our customers, as well as contributing to the economic development of Sicily. The port of Catania is a strategic port for us as it is a hub for the Group s services to Malta, Libya and Greece, said Mr Grimaldi. With the delivery of these new vessels, the Grimaldi Group not only aims to create a bridge between the Western and Eastern Mediterranean (making the Balkans even closer to Western Europe and North Africa), but is also committed to providing an even more efficient and viable alternative to road transport, whilst responding to the growing market requirements. 6 Baltic routes Finnlines bound for Russia The Finnish company, part of the Group, extends its existing Ro/Ro service between Bilbao, Antwerp and Helsinki to St. Petersburg and increases cargo capacity on the TransRussia Express service With the aim to expand its presence in Russia and enhance the country s maritime links into the global market, the Finnish Ro/ Ro and passenger operator Finnlines will extend its existing Bilbao-Antwerp- Helsinki weekly service to St. Petersburg. The new service, targeted at the automotive industry as well as at the truck-trailer and container business, will be launched at the beginning of August 2010 with three modern Ro/Ro vessels, whose cargo capacity is over 3,200 linear metres of rolling freight and 367 TEU. The vessels will leave Bilbao on Tuesday, calling the Grimaldi hub port of Antwerp on Friday and Helsinki on Monday before sailing into their new terminus port of St. Petersburg on Tuesday. The new service represents an innovative new link between the Iberian Peninsula and Western Russia via Antwerp and Finnlines home port of Helsinki. It will also allow Finnlines to connect St. Petersburg to the ports of the Mediterranean, West Africa and South America via the far-flung shipping network of its mother company, the Naples-based Grimaldi Group, and will reaffirm the company s strong commitment to the promising Russian market. Furthermore, Finnlines announced several major enhancements to its successful maritime service called TransRussiaExpress (TRE), which links St. Petersburg with Luebeck (Germany) and the ports of Helsinki (Finland) and Sassnitz (Germany), designed to increase capacity on this northern route and significantly expand its reach. In the coming months Finnlines will replace the m/v Translubeca, currently operating in the TRE service with the former m/v Finnhansa, newly repurchased from Finnlines mother company Grimaldi and renamed Transrussia. The unit is a sister ship of the Transeuropa, which already operates in the TRE service, shuttling directly between Luebeck and St. Petersburg; built with the highest iceclass standards, the vessel has a capacity of 3,200 lane metres of rolling cargo and 124 passengers, with a speed of 21 knots. The arrival of the m/v Transrussia will also act as prelude to a significant expansion of the service: We will be adding calls at Ventspils and doubling the frequency of our calls at Sassnitz to twice weekly affirms Uwe Bakosch, Finnlines CEO. We will therefore have two big sister ships calling Luebeck, Sassnitz, Ventspils and St. Petersburg every week. This will not only create new cargo possibilities within the Baltic, but will also open up the passenger market between Germany, Latvia and Russia. Uwe Bakosch concludes. Maltese cadets awarded by the Group On the 22 th of April three former Maritime Institute Officer Cadets were awarded by the Grimaldi Group for achieving the highest grades during their training course as Officers in Charge of a Navigational Watch. Guido Grimaldi, son of Emanuele Grimaldi and Commercial manager of the Short Sea Shipping Department of the Group, presented the Award in the presence of the Hon. Dr Austin Gatt, Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Communications, Mr Paul Attard, President, MCAST Board of Governors, and senior representatives from Malta Motorways of the Sea and MCAST Maritime Institute staff. This year the prize was awarded by the September 2006 Officer Cadet intake, who ended their course in 2009: the winners David Mercieca, Steve Gauci and Mark Mercieca, chosen following a rigorous selection process, received cash prizes. This is the second time that the Grimaldi Group awards former students at the Maritime Institute: in 2007 the MCAST Maritime Institute entered into a cooperation agreement with Malta Motorways of the Sea, a company of the Grimaldi Group, through which the company committed itself to support the training of Maltese Officer Cadets, in their process of becoming merchant marine deck and engineering officers. 6 GNE WS
