1 2017 PARENT INFORMATION PARENT INFORMATION FORNEY ROCKWALL CAMPUS
2 JOURNEY OVERVIEW Sunday, June 18 - Saturday, June 24 Winter Park, CO We will be taking over 900 high school students and volunteers from all of our campuses including Firewheel, Forney, LPE, Richland, Rockwall, Town East and White Rock to the beautiful Colorado mountains. Each day is filled with incredible worship with Matt Wheeler and guest speaker Jared Herd. Students are assigned to a small group to help walk them through the challenging and powerful messages they will hear. STAY UPDATED SOCIAL MEDIA Follow Journey on Twitter and or check out #419journey. You can also visit fournineteen.com/journey CONTACT/EMERGENCY The Vintage Hotel 100 Winter Park Drive Winter Park, CO Notes EMERGENCY In the case of a family emergency, we ask that you contact one of our Camp Deans, Tom Hoover and Clyde Pikes. Emergencies can include any incident regarding health, family crisis, or immediate pick-up. Tom Hoover - Camp Operations Coord Clyde Pikes - Camp Dean Bill Bonny - Medical Staff Janey Shepherd - Camp Coordinator Campus Pastors Greg Bradford - Camp Director Shane Boswell - Rockwall Pastor Mauri Villasenor - Firewheel Pastor Byron Milligan - Forney Pastor Felipe Castro - LPE Pastor Austin Patton - Richland Pastor Jamie Starrett - Town East Pastor Trace Jones - White Rock Pastor
3 MEDICAL Our medical team is comprised of all paramedics who are trained in all aspects of emergency medicine and advanced life support. They are capable of delivering on the spot treatments, first aid and comprehensive emergency medical care. Students will need to come to the medical station at camp at the appropriate times during the day to receive medications. If they forget (which we know teenagers do) our medical staff will track down the student to give them their medicine. During the bus ride to and from camp, the medical team will follow the buses in order to administer medicine as needed and in cases of a medical emergency. ALTITUDE ADJUSTMENT Adjusting to the climate: We will be travelling to approximately 9,200 feet in less than a 24 hour period. The great thing is that we will be doing so by bus, and not by air, so the impact and transition to the body will be reduced. However, there will still be a significant acclimatization, or adjustment period, once we arrive. Many think that the more fit or healthier we are, the less likely we are to suffer from some level of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and that is simply not true. At 9,000 ft, with the reduction in barometric pressure, there is essentially 30 35% less actual oxygen molecules in every breath you take. As a result, our breathing rate increases slightly until our body makes minor adjustments (production of more red blood cells, and the higher production of some key enzymes) and then all is well. How to help with the adjustment period?: The answer is very simple, but is something that we need to help our students begin doing about 3 4 days prior to leaving, as well as on the bus ride to Winter Park. Hydration: This is probably the number one key in success! Try to convince your students to drink a minimum of 3 quarts of water per day beginning 4 days prior to departure. The body will need the extra fluid during that adjustment period as well as while they are at camp. We will be encouraging them to maintain water based hydration during the entire camp. Carbohydrates: As you pack snack foods and things for the bus ride, consider packing things that have a high carbohydrate content. I realize this is not suitable for every particular diet, or medical condition, but if we can consume a high carb load on the way up to camp, as well as on day one once we arrive, the adjustment period will be greatly shortened and improved. Medications: Now you may be asking, what if my student does suffer from some form of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness)? As we will be in the 9,000 10,000 ft range, we will simply treat the specific symptoms (headache, nausea, vomiting, etc.) with our paramedic medical staff and get them back on their feet so they are able to experience everything God has in store for them while at camp. There is no need to pack any additional what if type medications other than their current prescriptions, as we will have the ability to dispense typical over-thecounter medications to your student based upon your permission to do so. In the event of a significant breathing emergency or shortness of breath, we will be equipped to deliver immediate oxygen support, as well as have access to the village medical clinic nearby. SECURITY We have thoughtfully considered and established all of our policies and procedures in keeping every student safe while they are in our care. We are bringing our own security team, composed of volunteers, many of whom are police officers. This team is led by Tom Hoover (on the RW staff) and Kevin Black (a seasoned volunteer in our ministry). ROOMING We are staying in nice hotels/condos, and therefore we ask that you have a conversation with your student about respecting the things in their room. Any damages will be paid for by the students room deposit. Adult leaders will be the only ones who have access to get into the room. Rooms are locked at all times (including free time) so a student must get access via their room leader. Once students are in the room for the night, they will not be allowed to leave. Our security team will do a room check on all rooms every night to ensure all students are in their rooms. Problems with your student s room assignment do not constitute an emergency. We work as hard as we can to make sure that students room with who they requested, but there are instances where it is necessary to go outside of those requests. We can promise that each room is created thoughtfully and prayferfully and your student will have an amazing week. NOTES
4 TRANSPORTATION We will be traveling to Colorado on chartered buses. The buses will all stay together for the entire trip. Once we are in Winter Park, everything is within walking distance (or gondola ride) unless a student has pre-registered for an excursion. Our same buses and drivers will be providing transportation to the daily excursions. All of the buses will be stopping in Amarillo to get new and refreshed bus drivers for the duration of the trip. All buses are pre-assigned and will be listed on the student s nametag which they will receive at check-in. Buses are assigned by room/friends requested. The majority of the buses are also split by guys/girls. We will have staff members and adult leaders spread throughout each bus. We will show movies on the buses and they will be rated G or PG only. Once on the bus, students will not be allowed back off the bus except for designated lunch stop. We will be stopping for lunch at the Colorado Mills Mall and students will be responsible for their own lunch. Each bus will have a bus captain who will have a roll sheet and they will ensure every student is accounted for at all times. You are encouraged to send snacks & drinks with your student for the bus ride. Breakfast muffins and juice will be served on Sunday morning. On the ride home, Chick-Fil-A will be served for dinner on Friday night. SMALL GROUPS The leaders in your student s small group will be background checked and trained by the campus Youth Pastors. Small groups are campus specific and generally range from students plus adult leaders. Small group time is for discussion on the topics the camp speaker teaches on during worship sessions. These same small groups will participate in the daily rec games as well. The rec time builds comradery and team work which then spills over into their group discussion times. REC TIME Our goal with recreation is to bring a sense of togetherness to our small groups. We know that a team is built stronger and faster by having shared experiences. Each day a small group will compete against other groups in games that require problem solving, team work, and fun! All of the games are based off of Survivor challenges, so what's not to love? FREE TIME & EXCURSIONS Free time is between lunch and dinner each day. Every student will receive a two-day activity pass. This pass allows unlimited base area activities which include the alpine slide, Zephyr Express chairlift (ski lift) to top of mountain, mini golf, maze, bungee, gyro extreme and a climbing wall. This is also the time that students will go on any excursions that have been paid for in advance which include white water rafting, ziplining and mountain biking. Students cannot sign up for these excursions at camp. By that time activities will be full and all excursions require a signed parent release. MINISTRY CAUSE Every year we place a special emphasis on a ministry or cause to highlight needs in our world. This year, funds will be used by our own team of high school students from Lake Pointe to install home kits in Guatemala. Home kits have three parts: Solar panels and lighting in their tine and mud hut homes, a water filtration system that cleans the water they have collected and concrete stoves with proper ventilation. This will replace their existing fire pits from which the smoke alone is the equivalent of inhaling 400 cigarettes a day. This will also help keep their children out of reach from an open flame. By our students meeting their physical needs this summer with the funds we raise at Journey to provide these home kits, we open the door for God to meet their Spiritual need. He is the living water, the light within the darkness and the eternal air that we breathe. NOTES
