This is always the big event of the year and is scheduled for December 19th. The prelunch reception begins at 11 am and lunch will be served at noon followed by some great entertainment until about 2 pm. Lunch will be $45 each. You will enjoy an excellent meal with all the trimmings. Table registration forms are enclosed below. Reservations and checks must be received by Bob Hickman, 11 Butler Dr., Lafayette by December 5th. LITTLE SIR PROGRAM NEAL HUNTLEY Don t miss the Ladies Day Christmas Luncheon. Our annual Ladies Day Christmas Luncheon will be held on Wednesday, Dec 19, at St. Mary s College Soda Center. Reception begins at 11am, with lunch served at noon followed by entertainment until 2pm. Cost is $45 per person. We've selected a great menu for you and your guests. Be sure to support this festive holiday event. Table reservation forms are enclosed. 2 BRANCH REPORTS SUNSHINE REPORT: STEWART KNUDSEN Good news. No reports of serious illnesses have been reported. From Branch 171, Monte Logan notes: SIR Lloyd Pringle is doing well after his heart problem and he even attended our last meeting. Ladies Day Christmas Luncheon Revenue/Expenses ($3,330.00/$1,350.00) ATTENDANCE REPORT: BOB HICKMAN Attendance at the NOVEMBER luncheon was 119 (highest attendance of the year). There were 113 members (83%), the speaker, two guests, one visitor, and two make-up member from Branch 171. There were 20 excused members and 3 unexcused who will be asked to pay the cost for the lunch. The following members have missed 6 or more meetings out of the last 12 and could be subject to termination if they do not attend the January meeting: #107, and 163. Certification of attendance at another SIR Branch will be considered a credit to the Attendance Record. Note: To be excused from a future meeting or to bring a guest, please see instructions under ATTENDANCE INFORMATION and TO BRING A GUEST on the last page of this Newsletter. 3 Pete Gates and Brad Hatcher with their nice string of trout ACTIVITIES REPORTS (Branch 174 & Branch 171) ASTRONOMY: GEORGE COBB (Br. 174) ; LARRY LANGE (Br 8) There is no meeting in December. Please plan on joining us at our January meeting on Monday, January 14. BARBERSHOP HARMONY: BRAD DEWEY (Br. 171) , RON BASS (Br. 174) Our SIRpremes barbershop group is currently at the optimum capacity for just the right harmony. Therefore, until one of our current members decides to retire (or heaven forbid, loses his voice), we regretfully will be unable to accommodate additional members. But please contact me if you would like to serve as a substitute for one of the parts at some future sing or would like ultimately to join us. BOCCE BALL: BILL BONDY (Br. 171) , NICK BIONDI (Br. 174) Bocce Ball is played weekly on Tuesdays and Fridays at 10 a.m. just beyond the bandstand at the Moraga Commons, weather permitting. There is no cost; requires little knowledge or skill; and is great fun. For information, call Bill (for Tuesday play) or Nick (for Friday play) before going to the court. BOWLING - AREA 2: DAN WELLER (Branch 8) Area 2 League bowling is held at Diablo Lanes in Concord every Wednesday at 10 a.m. This league is for SIR members only. Be there at 9:30 a.m. More members are welcome. Call for more information. BRIDGE: GREG TCHERKOYAN (Br. 171) STEWART KNUDSEN (Br. 174) We meet at the Moraga Hacienda on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. COMPUTERS & TECHNOLOGY - AREA 2: PHIL GOFF (Branch 116) <philgoff@yahoo.com>, DEREK SOUTHERN (Branch 8) <derek.southern@gmail.com>; DICK CURRY (Br. 174) Please note there will be no meeting of the Computer and Technology Group in December. Please plan on joining us at our January meeting to be held Thursday, January 17. DOMINOES: DAN MURPHY (Br. 171) , Currently we are playing at one of our players home on the 2 nd Wednesday of each month at 2 p.m. Please call Dan for details. FISHING - AREA 2: KARL DROESE (Br. 171) , Big Fish PETE GATES All SIR members and guests are welcome and, indeed, encouraged to participate in fishing trips as well as attend the monthly meetings. Our next meeting will be held Thursday, December 20, at the Legend Sports Bar and Grill, Diablo Creek Golf Course at 4050 Port Chicago Highway in Concord. Meetings start at 8:30 a.m. Mike Corker and son caught 4 nice stripers fishing from Pittsburg, and Joe Miscione and son caught nice stripers to 16 lbs on several ventures to Montezuma Slough. Terry Miller, Dick Thomson, Tom Boltz and Carl Moyer caught nice stripers and small sturgeon from Pittsburg. Paul Dubow joined Carl for yet another striper and more small sturgeon there, and Carl s daughter caught her first ever keeper (53 ) sturgeon fishing near PG&E. Carl and Terry Miller caught rock fish and ling cod from the ocean. 20 members of the fishing group helped eat some of those rock fish and ling cod in Carl s backyard. They also shared some of Terry s yellowtail cooked in garlic butter, and some of Tom Boltz smoked salmon. We began our winter trout season at Shadow Cliffs Reservoir. Pete Gates, Brad Hatcher, Harry Sherinian, Bill Landers, Barry Rauchle and Carl had mixed results, but 17 nice trout to 2 lbs met their doom. Paul Dubow released a very feisty 13 lb striper fishing with Bill Landers. Jack Waddell caught many trout and a few small stripers at Los Vaqueros Reservoir. Bill Landers caught bass, and Joe Peterson landed a nice 6 lb striper for a good dinner. We will be very busy this fall with: delta fishing for bass, catfish, and sturgeon, trout in local lakes, kokanee, crab and rock fish, and attending the various sportsmen shows. 4 GOLF: TONY SCHOEMEHL (Br. 174) GENE BELL (Br.171) We finish off the golf year with two tournaments in Dec. We play Monarch Bay on the 3 rd and Brentwood on the 10 th. HISTORICAL ADVENTURE and VETERANS ACTIVITIES: RICH SJOBERG (Br. 174) TED WESTPHAL (Br. 171) We are reviewing new and exciting adventures to undertake in Our first event will be a tour of the extremely popular Guide Dogs for the Blind s San Rafael campus. Our tour will be scheduled in January on a day to be determined. A docent will be assigned for each 10 members in our group. Our lead docent will be our own SIR Fred George. There is no fee but voluntary contributions are gratefully accepted. Please call Rich for details. INVESTMENT GROUP - AREA 2: ALLEN ESPENMILLER (Br. 174) KEN NAKASHIMA (Br. 171) Please note there is no December meeting of our Investment Group. Our next scheduled meeting will be on January 23. MODEL RAILROADING: GEORGE McLAIN (Br. 174) TOM WESTHOFF (Br. 171) We have a small group of model railroaders, and I would like to invite all other interested members (and those on the waiting list) to join us. There is no need to have a model railroad of your own, as we will also be visiting some amazing model railroad club exhibits from time to time throughout the Bay Area. Just call George (or geomclain@prodigy.net) to be included in our plans. PINOCHLE: Open (Br. 174), BILL KORN (Br. 171) Our pinochle players meet from 9:30 to 12:30 at the Moraga Royale, 1600 Canyon Road, Moraga every Wednesday (except we meet on Tuesday preceding the first Wednesday of each month). POKER: DICK MEDEL (Br. 174) & BILL WIEGMANN (Br. 174) Our low-stakes poker group meets the fourth Wednesday of each month from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. We meet at various locations. RUBBER BRIDGE - AREA 2: ROD SPICER We play on the 1 st Thursday of each month at 9 a.m. We meet at Carl s Jr. at Oak Grove & Ygnacio Valley Road in Walnut Creek. Call Rod for information and a reservation. STAMP GROUP: LARRY BEANS (Br. 171) , RICH SJOBERG (Br. 174) We meet on the Friday following the first Wednesday of each month in the Board Room of Aegis Convalescent Home, 950 Country Club Drive in Moraga at 9:30 a.m. Call Rich for information. TABLE POOL - AREA 2: BILL WEINBERG We meet the 1st & 3rd Monday at 11:00 a.m. at Masse's North Main in Walnut Creek. No advance notice is necessary. Just show up and play. Cost is $5.00 for as long as you want to play. We usually play about 2 hours but not everyone stays for the final curtain. All SIRs in our area are welcome. TENNIS: RALPH THORNICROFT (Br. 174) , JIM COUNTRYMAN (Br.171) The tennis group plays at St. Mary s College at 8 a.m. on Tuesday and Thursday each week. They have players at every skill level and additional members are welcome. Call Ralph for information. WALKING: KEN NAKASHIMA (Br. 171) LYLE DECK (Br. 174) We meet every Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. at the Serbian Church, unless we advise you otherwise via . WINE TASTING: FRANK COMPRELLI (Br. 171) GENE BELL (Br. 171) , JON LEUTENEKER (Br. 174) There are now two wine tasting groups. Both are couples events and normally held in-home starting about 7:00 p.m. with a cost per person averaging about $15. Frank Comprelli is chairman of the group that meets on the second Tuesday of each month - this group has a full roster. Gene Bell is chairman of the group that meets on the third Tuesday of each month - membership in this group is still open. For more information give Jon a call. Jun 1-9, 2013: Memphis Blues to the New Orleans Jazz on the American Queen. A 7 night cruise on board the American Queen down the Mississippi with a pre-cruise stay in Memphis and an optional 2 day post stay in New Orleans. 8 SIR Branch 171 and 174 Ladies Day Christmas Luncheon WEDNESDAY, December 19, 2012 Mark your calendars, get into your holiday mood and come along with us for another enjoyable and festive Ladies Day Luncheon at St. Mary's Soda Center. Reception with wine and conversation begins at 11:00 AM, followed by lunch at noon. We will have the student choral group from Miramonte High School entertaining us with your favorite holiday songs. Our lunch menu will feature a choice of either Roasted Rosemary-Infused Leg of Lamb(LL) or Herbed Grilled Salmon(SA) with Herb Roasted Red Potatoes, Green Beans with Sautéed Almonds and Pearl Onions in a Cheese Sauce. You'll start with a Spinach Salad with Bacon, Red Onions, Tomato, Toasted Walnuts, Crumbled Blue Cheese and Balsamic Vinaigrette. Dessert will be a Grand Sequoia - a Chocolate Mousse with Orange Liqueur. Wine will also be served at your table during lunch. Please submit your reservations using the form below.
