1 The September 2018 Volume LXXXIII, Number 9 EDGE Newsletter of The Ski Resorts Prepare For A New Season As many of you know, ski resorts are competing for our dollars. They offer group discounts, season pass discounts (if you buy early in the year), and most offer senior discounts, though the senior age varies. Over the past few years, resorts have been adding more ski areas to their brand. For instance, Peak Resorts added Hunter Mountain, and Vail Resorts recently picked up Okemo and Mount Sunapee in the East. One of the reasons for this expansion is to make their season pass more valuable to the skier. For example, a Peak Resort Season Pass is good at Hunter, Mount Snow, Attitash, and several more mountains. According to Powder Magazine, resorts will be making major investments this year to improve the skiing experience. Arapahoe Basin is adding 30 new runs and 468 acres of new terrain. Winter Park is replacing their old Zephyr Express lift with a 10-person gondola. Killington is adding a 6-person bubble chair to access the Snowdon peak and updating the K-1 gondola with new 8-person cabins. Stratton will now service the Snow Bowl area with a new 98 chair high-speed lift. Picture yourself taking advantage of these resorts and trying out the new lifts and runs. Now add to that picture doing it with a ski buddy or maybe five buddies! You start to understand the benefits of the Hudson Valley Ski Club. (Check out the Discounts section on our website.) You never have to ski alone. ~ Craig Goldstein Bike the Harlem Valley Rail Trail It was a small turnout for our bike ride on Sunday, August 12. No doubt the forecast kept people away, but fools rush in where the wise fear to tread. So it was four intrepid souls who set out from Mechanic Street in Amenia, undeterred by the possible perils put forth by nature. Luck was on our side. We did not get rained on and the wind was light. Robin, Ellen, Patricia and I made a jovial group. The scenery in the Harlem Valley is exceptional. We enjoyed it throughly as we chatted and petaled northbound to the village of Millerton. We were not hot as the clouds kept us shaded from the mid-day sun. At the north end we relaxed in easygoing Millerton for a while and then took on the return trip to Amenia. It was a nice excursion. I encourage each of you to take time out for a ride on our beautiful and peaceful Harlem Valley Rail Trail before the season is over. If you go, give me a call. Inside... I would love to join you. The club trip to Winter Park, Colorado is full (taking a wait list) and the Mt. Bachelor, Oregon trip has just six slots open. The annual Mt. Snow mid-week has been announced and a few weekend trips are in the works. Stay tuned for those flyers. August saw the annual Garden Party at the Van Zanten home, a bike ride on the Harlem Rail Trail, kayaking, and the clean up on the Dutchess Rail Trail (unfortunately it was rained out). In September we will return to the regular member meeting schedule of the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays at Umberto s of Mamma Marisa on Route 9 in Poughkeepsie (next to Red Lobster). Membership renewals are due by Sept. 5th. At the second September meeting on the 19th, Charlie Shanes will present a slideshow on his 2012 trip to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. I am looking forward to a great ski season and all the events that your club sponsors. Since joining HVSC I have enjoyed many hours of fun and camaraderie with fellow members. When I speak to folks from other clubs and groups I have found that, in comparison, we are a unique mix of active, energetic and diverse people. I have been given the opportunity to be a trip leader again this year and I delight in the thought of meeting and skiing with fellow adventurers. As I process the trip registrations I am happy to see the familiar names, but it s the first timers and the I used to ski sign ups that will allow HVSC to showcase the advantages of club membership. It s not the destination, it s the journey.. Keith R. Faucher Krfauch@optonline.net or President@HudsonValleySkiClub.org Cell

6 6 Club Events Another Wonderful Garden Party On Sunday, August 5th, Frank and Lois Van Zanten opened their home and gardens to us, as they have graciously done for the past several years. This bright, sunny afternoon brought out about 35 lucky guests. I say lucky because the flower gardens were lush from all the rain, the colors were vivid, and the variety was plentiful. As I wandered around I could only imagine the amount of work that went into this display. Another reason we were lucky was the food. Guests were asked to bring dishes to share, and they did not disappoint. On the table were chips and dips, salads, entrees and desserts. There were two different potato salads, stuffed hardboiled eggs and a tomato salad. Lois brought out her wonderful lasagna to go with a large variety of entrees. Desserts ranged from homemade peach cobblers, pound cakes, cookies and pecan diamonds, to pies and ice cream. Oh yes wine, beer, and soft drinks! The combination of great weather, lovely gardens and wonderful food made for an outstanding afternoon. What made it even better were the friendly conversations and connections with folks not seen in a while. Frank reports that this party will take place again on August 3, Try not to miss it. Thank you Frank and Lois. Photos by Peter Gray ~ Craig Goldstein

7 Club Events 7 The North Face gear company was named after the coldest, most unforgiving side of a mountain. Ironically, it was started at an altitude of only 150 in San Francisco in 1966 by two avid hikers who founded a small mountaineering retail store. As they say, the rest is history. Buy early, save more.

8 8 Club Info Should I Buy Trip Insurance? On every HVSC western trip flyer, you will see the recommendation that you buy Trip Insurance. Is it required? No. Is it a good idea? Yes. I have seen firsthand where an individual incurred the loss of their entire trip payment due to an unexpected cancellation for medical / family issue or were stuck with thousands of dollars in expenses because of an injury during the trip. If they had purchased trip insurance, all or most would have been covered. Skiing is a high-risk sport, read the back of your lift ticket sometime, you are on your own. The cost of insurance is around 7% of the trip cost. HVSC recommends that its participants purchase insurance. Purchasing travel insurance is super easy. Each participant may now obtain and pay for coverage by going to our travel agent s website, clicking the TRAVEL INSURANCE link on the grey bar at the top of the page, and registering online with our partner, AIG/ Travel Guard. Identify Encompasse as the booking agency at the appropriate spot on the registration form so that Travel Guard can certify the policy and interact with the booking agent in the event of a claim. Why buy a travel insurance plan? Travel mishaps occur every day. No matter how hard you try, there are some things you just can t plan for. If a family member gets sick. If your baggage is lost. If your trip is delayed. Your passport is lost or stolen. If weather prevents your travel. You need to see a doctor for a sudden injury. If you miss a flight connection. That s why there s Travel Guard. Or you can purchase it on your own. This link is to the company used by the NJ Ski / Snowboard Council. The following is a quote from the Travel Guard website. In addition to trip cancellation and interruption, most travel insurance plans include coverage for trip delay, missed connection, lost or delayed baggage, medical expenses, and emergency evacuation with repatriation of remains. 24 hour assistance services are included to help the traveler with things such as emergency medical assistance, lost baggage tracking, emergency cash transfer, emergency or last minute travel arrangements, assistance with replacing lost travel documents, and much more. Storms that deposit light, cold snow on top of a denser layer create the best powder conditions. Storms that dump thick, heavy snow on a fluffy bottom layer elevate avalanche danger.
