Contact Jim Gahn regarding this event or earmaster@juno.com ASIA Bill Hornbeck, founder of the Amateur Ski Instructors Association, has announced his retirement as Executive Director, effective May 31. The ASIA board has voted to dissolve the 34 year old organization, concurrent with Bill's retirement. This unexpected development will leave a gap in the certification program for skiing and snowboarding instructors with which ski clubs who offer instruction will have to deal. Gwen Whitewater Rafting on the Upper Hudson River "A big thanks to Carole Daniels for leading a dozen brave souls on an exciting 17 mile whitewater rafting adventure on (and in for some) the upper Hudson. The Alpine Lodge in North Creek, with its Great Room for our wine & cheese parties, was quite comfortable and spotlessly clean. The manager made us feel like we were his house guests. Of course, the excite- ment came from the Class 3 & 4 rapids, especially challenging thanks to recent rains and a water release from the dam. Even with the supplied wetsuits, we all got plenty wet, as the photos show. If you missed this trip, you missed a great adventure!" Rich Partridge [More photos at:

Just show up, team up, and play. Proper golf attire is recommended. Each course has its own dress standards so it is best to wear golf shorts and a collared shirt just to be safe. Greens fees and golf cart rental fees are per each courses' rate card and are to be paid by the player. For those that qualify, be sure to ask for a senior rate. Our condolences to his family. From Frank Van Zanten (President HVSC): "John was a great friend. He'll be long remembered as such." From Richard Fick (President TSSC): " With heavy heart I am saddened to inform all that John Brooks has passed away today. As I get more info I will be forwarding it along." From Douglas and Matthew Aho: With sadness we wanted to share that our beloved John Brooks has passed away. He spoke fondly and often of the great times he had with the ski club and all of the many wonderful people he met along the way. Thank you all for being a positive part of his life. A service is being planned for Saturday, May 31st, with details to follow. Thank you for many comforting notes, visits and messages that John has received during this difficult time. 3 HVSC Trips Page 3 Trip Sign-ups June 4 Trip sign-ups for Snowbird and Banff will begin following the regular membership meeting on June 4. Trip details are on the website and are in the newsletter. Members who sign up in person at the June 4 meeting will go on the list first followed by any mail in sign-ups from members. The sign up is for HVSC members only. The trip opens to Trailsweeper members on July 1. Completed registration forms and deposit checks will be accepted from Trailsweeper members on June 4 for the "Wait List". On July 1 the Trailsweeper sign ups will be moved to the trip participant list based on space available. There is no non-member charge for Trailsweeper members. Any space still available is open to non-members. There is a $70 charge for nonmembers. A complete registration form and payment are due at the time of sign up. If you do not have a completed registration form and/or deposit check you will be placed on the "Wait List". Please make your check payable to HVSC Trips with the name of the trip in the Memo section. Registration forms can be filled out and printed from the club website. Spaces for both trips are limited. Nancy Egan, Trip Committee Mt Bachelor, 2013 Member Bill Dunstan receives a personalized trail sign from the participants on the Schweitzer trip. Each day at 4:30, Bill called together a "Board Meeting" at the Chimney Rock Cafe. His enthusiasm was infectious and we thank him for the huge part he had in making the Schweitzer trip so much fun. Nancy Egan looks on. Trip sign-ups... will begin following the regular membership meeting on June 4. Cancellation/Refund Policy for HVSC Ski Trips 1. Minimum cancellation penalty is $100 for weeklong trips and $25 for shorter trips. 2. Cancellation requests must be in writing and will take effect the date they are received by the trip leader. 3. Penalties vary from trip to trip. Anyone who cancels from a trip will be assessed penalties as per our contract with the vendor. Whatever the club loses, the person who cancels will lose plus the $100 cancellation penalty, however, the penalty will not exceed the total cost of the trip. 4. Refunds will not be issued until after the final accounting of the trip. THE TRIP COM- MITTEE STRONGLY SUG- GESTS PARTICIPANTS PUR- CHASE TRIP INSUR- ANCE. The price for trip insurance runs approximately 7% of the trip cost. An option to purchase trip insurance for any reason may be available. 6 Page 6 HVSC Frank Van Zanten, President Hudson Valley Ski Club HVSC History: Frank Van Zanten is the 45th president of HVSC in the club s 75 year history. How many past presidents can you remember? How many can you name? How many did you know? Visit and click Members to see the complete list. From the President We did not have a president for an entire year, but nobody seemed to be too bothered by it. Officers and board members stepped up to the plate, at times assuming more than their normal duties and all taking turns presiding at board and member meetings. It was an awkward time not to have a full roster of officers, seeing how this was the Hudson Valley Ski Club's 75th anniversary year. (Dodoranscentennial, did you know that?) It was a time to be proud of an amazing history, consciously aware of who we are as an organization, and a time to start reflecting on where the coming years and decades will lead the club. Looking ahead, we will have to take account of changes in climate and in the recreational snow sports scene and its related industries Thanks to a great and hardworking planning committee, most ably led by Craig Goldstein, the club's 75th year became a non-stop series of sport, social and community service events. Members responded by widely participating in and enjoying onand off-snow events. Yes, it was an awkward start, but the year developed into a very good one. At the starting point of a new year the club seems wellpositioned for making it a good one. The rosters for officers, board members and committee chairs are all complete and show a healthy mix of neophytes and experienced players. To also make this the very good year that it can be let's all play a part. Review your commitment Music In The Parks Free Lawn Concerts Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. June 4 to being a member, and resolve to attend meetings, recruit new members, make suggestions, do the jobs to which we may have been elected or appointed, take part in club events, etc. Schedule yourself into the June meeting... Music in the Park at Vanderbilt and Mills Join us for any or all of the free Music in the Park concerts every Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. starting June 4th. We will gather at Vanderbilt Mansion under the tallest tree on the left of the seating area approx. 80 ft. from the Mansion for music and snacks. Bring a lawn chair or blanket. We'll look for you if we know you're coming. Leave message at or just show up. On the nights it's held at Mills Mansion, we'll meet on the left side of the stage at the bottom of the hill. Moderate paddle July am Erie Canal on Mohawk River Waterford, NY Locks 7-2 Meet at Coxsackie Thruway Entrance on 9W at 9 am for convoy to Waterford. Start at Lock 7 park; paddle through six locks ; end up in Hudson River just south of lock 2. Must then shuttle cars back to lock 7. Easy Aug am Cold Springs, NY-- kayak launch Head south on the Hudson River to Constitution Marsh Easy Sept am Dutchman s Landing Park Catskill, NY Meet at park. Up the creek with a paddle ; possible Ramshorn Sanctuary. Easy Oct am Cheviot Park near Germantown, NY. Paddle and then end of season picnic. Bring chairs. Easy An overnight trip exploring the Thimble Islands on the Long Island Sound on June 29 is planned. If there is enough interest and weather conditions are positive, the trip is a go. This trip is for the hearty willing to paddle several hours a day. You may just paddle one day (Sunday) and then go home or you may stay until Monday and paddle that day as well. If you plan to stay overnight, let Yvonne know so that she can book a motel or campsite. For the last trip on Oct. 4, we will have a picnic at Dutchman s Landing Park will provide hamburgers, etc. Bring drinks, snacks and chair.
