5 RECENT CLUB ACTIVITIES... Tathra Vintage Fair Saturday 9th September A total of 9 club vehicles were displayed at the Tathra Vintage Show and Shine Fair on Saturday the 9th of September. Ray Ubrien had his '37 Chev, Geoff Exell took his Jaguar out for a drive. Anthony Dack had his Holden FC and for the first time, the Volvo P1800. Henry Peterson had their heads turning with the '55 Holden Ute. Ron McCartney displayed his very original 1980 XD Ford Falcon. Wayne & Sue Milford settled for a shady spot with their '54 FJ Holden. Graham Peterson had us looking for our sunglasses with his sparkling GTR XU1 Torana. Andrew Duchesne arrived very regal in his Maroon Valiant. It was nice to see Gary Smiths new project, a '58 Packard on the back of his Bedford Truck. The morning was a little breezy but the sunshine was delightful against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean. There was a great variety of vehicles on show, coming from different clubs and personal cars and caravans. There was a peoples choice award organised by the Event Coordinators, Carman & Tim from the Beachside Caravan Park. Anthony shared 3rd place with his Holden FC. This event is proposed to happen again next year, only bigger and better. It was nice to see so many visitors and locals out enjoying the day. (thanks to Anthony Dack for this report) 5

6 Past Members Memorial Run held on 10th September. Sunday, the weather was much better than the cool windy day before at Tathra on Saturday. Six cars left Bega for Pambula about 9.00am, they were Bob and Nola Russell in Falcon Fairmont sedan, Wayne and Sue Milford in Holden FJ sedan, Peter and Jan Wilton in Ford Zephyr sedan, Barbara Black and Lyn Murphy forced to drive a modern as Barbara s cars did not want to leave their shed, Neil and Kerri Wood in a modern, Ray & Pauline Ubrihien with granddaughter Hanna in 37 Chev. We were met by Henry and Janelle Petterson in Holden FJ ute at the markets in Pambula Hall, nice craft and jewellery to buy there. Then on to the big monthly market held on the Pambula Soccer Field, a lot of stalls to look at, trash and treasure also food and vegetable stalls. From there we decided to go to the Lions Park out on the coast at Pambula Beach for a late morning tea. There we all enjoyed the scenery, weather and good company with a chat and to top it all off Barbara produced the leftovers of that beautiful 30th birthday cake. At 12.30pm we went to Pambula Golf Club for lunch to meet other members who could not get away earlier. Janelle bought her mum along, others were Andrew and Sue Duchesne, Alan and Lesley Smith, Peter and Joycelyn Clark, Geoff and Lorraine Exell, Gary and Fran Thornton with friend Frank. It took a while for the 27 of us to get our meal but was well worth waiting for while enjoying a complimentary wine or beer with our meal. At the end of a very enjoyable day we made our own way home. (thanks to Ray Ubrihien for this article sorry no photos) Lions Club 100 Years Celebration in Colombo Park, Bemboka Sunday 17 September It was a lovely spring day that greeted members of the BHMC when they arrived in their historic cars to join the many displays on show at Colombo Park. As well as over 20 historic cars and trucks from the BHMC and SCHVC there were impressive stationary engine displays from the Bombala Engine Club and numerous old tractors, predominantly Massey Ferguson and Chamberlain. Complementing these exhibits were numerous stalls selling handiwork and home-made cakes, examples of 1st World War uniforms and equipment, there were demonstrations by the local tai chi class with the local primary school students putting on a very impressive dance display. There was a very well stocked food canteen run by the Lions and the archery area proved very popular with many exhibitors and visitors. I guess the only disappointment was the small number of visitors who turned up to support what was a terrific display arranged by the organising committee. 6

7 Gary and Monica Smith had a diverse collection of historic vehicles on show including a Datsun 240z coupe, 1969 Isuzu Bellett, 1978 Isuzu Tilt tray truck and a 1974 Isuzu 6-ton truck with a 1958 Packard on the tray. Other club members present on the day where: Ray and Pauline Ubrihien 1935 Oldsmobile, Wayne and Sue Milford 1954 FJ Holden, Anthony and Kathy Dack 1971 Volvo P1800, Judy Brand and Charles Hodsdon 1959 Mk.1 Jaguar, Henry Petterson 1955 Holden FJ ute, Kerri and Neil Wood modern. Article by Gary Smith and editor. NSW SMA AGM Saturday 9th September 2017 Col McRae attended this meeting on behalf of the BHMC and ended up accepting a committee position. Congratulations Col! 8 MEMBER S VEHICLE FOR THE MONTH Anthony and Cathy Dack s 1971 Volvo P1800 The Volvo P1800 was originally purchased by David Ferguson from Mosman in Sydney. The original number plate was BAI 798. The vehicle was purchased from British & Continental Cars on William St, Sydney and serviced by the same company in their service centre in Waterloo. Gerry Lister was the service manager and I have been in touch with him recently. He remembers the car fondly. David was a lawyer in Sydney and drove his car to work most days, but not really anywhere else. While the car was under warranty the paint work deteriorated and had to be resprayed. The vehicle has been housed for all its life, so that is why the paint is in such good condition. In 1985 David must have wanted a little more performance from his P1800 so he took it to Zyfert & Muller in Edgecliff. There is a receipt for the engine work that was done. Engine was bored out a bit and all parts crack tested and balanced. They fitted a better oil pump and mild cam. Ported the head and tested it on flow bench. It does go well. David was a member of the Volvo P1800 Car Club for many years. Over time David's eye sight deteriorated and he was becoming less confident driving his car, so his family finally convinced him to sell it. My father saw it advertised and asked if I could go and have a look at it. I happened to be going to Sydney the next weekend and got in touch with him. After talking with David and looking at the car I was convinced that the car was worth the money. It needed some work, but not a lot. So, I called Dad and told him that if he wasn't going to buy the car, I would. So, the job was done. My father and brother flew down from Hervey Bay and met with David. Bought the car and drove it home over 2 days. At the end of the 1st day I got a call asking if it had an over drive. "yes. There is another switch on the dashboard or opposite the indicator " Oh. Is that what that is, came the replay. My brother and I got personalised plates for his birthday. VPI800. In gold. Dad had a lot of work done to the brake system, but little else. Whenever we went up to Hervey Bay I checked it over and gave it a bit of a tune. As you can imagine it didn't get driven much but did get washed a lot. Unfortunately, dad past away in February but thoughtfully left his much loved P1800 to me. Kathy and I flew up recently and drove it back. It didn t take long to find out that it goes well. So, a couple of days driving and we got the girl home and it is now on historic plates. (thanks to Anthony Dack for this article) 8
