2 Presidents Report, Firstly, I would like to Thank you all for the very good attendance at the AGM! My Election as President was not on my bucket list but my officers and I will do our best to have an enjoyable year planed for our vintage club. My wife, Helen elected as Editor as well does not mean it is a takeover, but thank-you, we do not know where Andrew got the time to produce our newsletter, but thanks Andrew. I would like to thank Jim as well for the last two years as President and of course Norm for his 10years that has helped to grow the club to what it is today, so I have big shoes to fill! A big thank you to Chris Pask for accepting the position as Patron and I wish Chris and Alyson an enjoyable & safe trip back to your home country and the Track Marshall & plough, is waiting to Rock & Roll. This newsletter is for the communication of coming events and to foster, promote and encourage everyone s interest in Vintage Machinery & farm machinery. The Newsletter is for and about our members, and their interests and without your contributions I cannot make this enjoyable for you all to read! Please contact me with any information or requests. ianhelenmac@xtra.co.nz. I would like to have one or two articles on the interesting Vintage Machinery that different members have restored and collected and very few members know about? I am very aware that a lot of hard work that goes into restoring machinery and many long hours of dedication and frustration, so my idea is for you to share this and we will all enjoy the benefit and I am sure members must be proud of their achievements and be happy to share them. I can drive vehicles but I do not claim to have mechanical knowledge, so I apologies for anything that is incorrect. If Members don t help me with articles, Ian has a lot of bulldozers I can write about but this newsletter is for everyone, so please contact me! Editor Helen.

The Story of a D4C Caterpillar. Ian brought a D4c which he had previously owned!

He put a logging winch on it and pulled Rimu logs out of the bush to build a new woolshed on the farm, plus lots of tracking in 1982. The tractor was sold with the farm.

We matched photos and details to confirm it was the one Ian owned and so he made a deal and purchased it. It has an oil clutch and an Electric start.

Ian first started driving Caterpillars when he left school in Takapau and when we brought the farm in Nuhaka it had the D4c was part of the deal. He put a logging winch on it and pulled Rimu logs out of the bush to build a new woolshed on the farm, plus lots of tracking in The tractor was sold with the farm. Last year, Dave Symonds took Ian to Tony Connors at Crownthorpe where he had a D4c serial number 24A467, built in Scotland We matched photos and details to confirm it was the one Ian owned and so he made a deal and purchased it. It has an oil clutch and an Electric start. Tony reconditioned the motor, but the rest of the machine was very worn after 60 years of work. Now in bits, Dave & Ian found the Right- Hand sprocket broken on main shaft, Left- Hand Bull gear broken teeth, needs new steering brakes and clutches, new rollers and track gear. It has 360hours on the clock from the engine rebuild. Watch this space for work in progress and pictures of rebuild of Caterpillar. How long depends on the availability of parts and weather.

4 New Life for 770 David Brown My association with a certain little David Brown began in much the same way as my friendship with many of our club members through my work. While discussing a planned drainage project with a Twyford landowner more than 10 years ago, I noticed the sad- looking machine hiding at the back of an open shed. The owner told me that it had a serious gearbox problem and wouldn t drive properly. He hadn t decided what to do with it, but thought it would be too expensive to fix, so he parked it up several years earlier. Every time I passed the property from then on, I checked to make sure it was still there, until late in 2014, David Grenside told me that the property had been sold and there might be a chance for me to buy the tractor. A quick call to the owner - he was happy for me to check it out, so another call, to Andrew, and a date was set. Armed with all the necessaries we towed it into the sunlight, and a short time later Andrew had it running. Driving was a different story however, with a loud metallic chattering sound coming from the gearbox, and a loss of drive whenever just the lightest load was placed on the drive. Andrew soon had the diagnosis a very worn Muff Coupling between the Clutch and the Gearbox. The fix is a simple replacement job, (yeah right!) providing a new coupling can be found of course. The Hour Clock showed just 161 hours, and the owner believes that the clock is original so that s 10,000 hours of work done. A quick chat with the owner, a bit of the folding stuff handed over, and the 770 was mine. Off to the Regional Council Depot for a thorough steam- clean, then into a shed I had rented and the dismantling started, together with the search for parts.

5 The steering was very sloppy so all 3 Tie- rod Ends were replaced and new Pivot Bushes were made for the Front Axle. Wheel Bearings and King- pin Bushes were sound as was the Power Steering gear with the hoses and filter replaced. In the engine department, new Crankshaft Seals front and rear, new Water Pump, Sump off for a clean and to check the Oil Pump intake screen, some new fuel piping, the obligatory new fuel and oil filters, new Tacho and Throttle cables and we re all set to go (or so I thought). Further back, all looked to be in very good condition, including the Live- drive Clutch system. So, with a good clean, a new Muff Coupling in place and fresh oil, gaskets etc., it was all back together. The Brakes seemed to be working well and there were no oil leaks around the Final Drives, so again it was just a good clean- up and fresh oil. The tin work was left with Peter Cooper, who did his usual superb job in sorting the Mudguards, Bonnet and Grille. On the Instrument Panel, the Light Switch was moved to make way for an extra gauge so that the warning lights could be replaced by Temperature, Oil Pressure and Ammeter. Early on I had decided to finish the project in the British style, so a quick trip to David Brown HQ in Ross- on- Wye while we were in the UK bought a Gold Grille, White Steering Wheel and other things that I could fit in my suitcase. Home again, it was time to get the engine started, so with temporary battery connections it was all go, or so I thought! After numerous frustrating attempts and lots of help (thanks Andrew, Jim, Graham & Neil) a Fuel Injection Pump overhaul finally solved the problem and the familiar 3- cylinder DB rumble was sweet music. Some brown paint (me), some white paint (Graham), new footwear all round and a re- wire sees the job almost done. The final touch a red enamel Muffler from John Conaty in Ireland to match the original. The cost as usual, about twice the budget; time taken far too long, but just in time for the Expo in Takapau.
