1 What Are Internal Pullers? Back to the Basics Internal Pullers Internal gear and bearing pullers are simple tools that are designed for dismounting press fit items through the center of the part to be pulled. They have specially designed jaws for inside pulling jobs such as crankshaft pilot bearings, bearing cups, needle bearings, bushings, seals, grease retainers, gimble bearings and rear-axle bearings. Internal pullers often feature a slide rod and sliding hammer to help facilitate the removal of bearings. These unique features help the technician generate the maximum amount of force without the need for additional tools. Internal pullers provide a straight pull and help avoid unnecessary damage to the component being pulled. 2 What are the components? Internal gear and bearing pullers generally consist of these basic parts: Posi Lock Puller internal gear and bearing pullers have a patented design that consist of: Jaws (2-or3-jaw options) Cross Arm/ Cross Bar Slide Rod & Hammer Patented Safety Cage T-handle Jaw head assembly (simular to the cross arm) 3-Jaws Slide Rod & Hammer How to use an internal puller? Although there are many applications, the process for proper gear and bearing removal with an internal puller is simular. Below are instructions on how to use a Posi Lock internal puller. Select the proper puller Examine the part to be pulled and select the proper size puller for the application. Adjust and fit the puller Fit the puller by inserting the jaws through the center of the component to be pulled. Take extra precaution to make sure the jaws fit tight against the inside of the housing. Turn the t-handle of the puller to lock the jaws firmly inside the component. Remove the part Start with the sliding hammer in a rest position at the bottom of the slide rod. Pull the sliding hammer to the top of the slide rod until it rams against the handle. This action generates the maximum amount of force that is needed to move the component. Repeat until the component is completely removed. Campaign 3 Pg. 2

3 Selecting an internal puller When choosing the proper puller for a specific application, several points must be considered: Puller Reach Puller reach is the available distance between the pulling surface of the jaw and the jaw head of the puller. This distance varies and decreases as jaws are opened. When choosing a puller make certain the reach is sufficient to attach the puller. Puller Spread Puller spread is the maximum distance that the jaws can open. In choosing the proper puller make certain the puller has a large enough spread to attach to the object being removed. Force Force varies between each user when using an internal puller. The stronger the technician, the more force they can exert. It is impossible to predict the exact force needed for every pulling situation. The amount of press fit and force of removal can vary greatly between jobs. The setup requirements along with the size, shape, and condition of the parts being pulled are variables which must be considered. Safety OPERATOR SAFETY COMES FIRST! Study each pulling application before you select a puller. A significant amount of force can be exerted with a puller. Respect theses forces and always observe safety precautions: a. Always select the proper puller for each pulling job. A puller equal to or larger than required. b. Inspect the puller before each use. Replace any worn or damaged parts with authorized parts. c. Always wear safety goggles when using pullers. d. Always use hand tools with mechanical pullers. e. Never apply heat or alter the puller by welding, cutting, or grinding. f.
