2 DISPATCHER Page 2 Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat. The flurry of the holidays starts with warm and peaceful feelings toward our family and friends. I have been struggling to think of something to make for my friends and family. Nothing big, but I like to give something handmade to as many as I can. I still see a commercial that played a number of years ago, where kids are holding up their puce colored sweaters with one long arm, and saying Thanks, Grandma. I think it was a commercial for gift cards or something like that. I strive to avoid that. I realized as I was out shopping that shopping bags will be my thing this year. Since the new law passed, all of the stores are charging for plastic bags. Problem solved. Now, I just have to make them. We have a very exciting year ahead of us, with some really cool workshops and speakers. Sign-ups start at our December meeting, so get in line for some of the excitement. Not to mention, the Home Tour and Luncheon is next June. It will be here before you know it. We will have a new opportunity quilt, and we start the year with a bang, by taking the bus to Road to California. Get your Christmas quilts and decorations out, and settle back for a wonderful end to your year. I hope all of your family can gather as much as possible to celebrate and share in the season. Family is a gift that cannot be taken for granted. Have a Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah and Happy New Year. Pam Boozan

3 Page 3 ORANGE GROVE QUILTERS GUILD Representatives from the 3-1 Marines will be at our December meeting to receive our gifts to their children. Please bring unwrapped toys for infants to 11 year olds and gift cards (e.g., Game Stop, Target) for the older kids. Let s help make their holiday special. ROAD TO CALIFORNIA The quilt show, Road to California, starts January 19-22, Did you know that a single day entrance is $16.47 if you go on your own? That doesn t include parking, and walking to the venue, waiting in line to get your ticket, walking through the whole show, and then walking back to your car before you even get to drive home. That is why we organize our annual bus trip, so that you get transportation from the Elks Lodge included, no parking fees, and it includes your show entrance fee. For $37, you get there with curbside service, go in and enjoy the day, and get curbside service to pick you up and take you home. What a deal!! Walkers and walking assistance can be accommodated. Carol Munn is selling tickets at our next guild meeting. If we don t sell at least 45 seats, we may have to cancel, so don t lose out on this opportunity. Come on. You ll have fun.

6 DISPATCHER Page 6 If any of you have receipts for reimbursement from the Guild, please bring them to our meeting on Wednesday, December 7. I would like to get all of the expenses for 2016 settled by Dec. 31. However, if you cannot get your receipts to me by then, you will still be able to turn them in next January. Thanks, Jane Oglesby Membership Report for December dispatcher It s renewal time again! The year has really gone by! You will find a copy of the renewal form in this newsletter, on the webpage or there is one in the 2016 yearbook. I will have forms at the guild meetings if you don t have a way to print it. The dues are still only $25. (A check or exact cash is greatly appreciated! Credit card, if necessary, but only if the treasurer is available.) Quite a bargain for so much fun during the year. Your renewal form needs to be to membership by the January meeting so you will be in the yearbook. (Yes, I need a new, fully completed, one each year for easier bookkeeping). Remember, that the guild yearbook is given only to current guild members. It becomes a very useful tool when you are trying to find the phone number or address of a guild member. Also, the information in the yearbooks is only for guild member use and we do not give copies or information from the yearbooks to nonmembers or other entities. The yearbooks will be ready by the March meeting. Maybe the February meeting if I can get those January renewals in quickly and get a faster turnaround for the yearbooks. Happy Turkey Day to everyone! Bonnie Lippincott Membership Chairman

Jane Oglesby $50.00 gift cards Mary Lou Ripper, Marilyn Pond, Bea Vieira, Eva Jamar $30.00 gift cards Dolores Kaiser, Sandra Bloore $25.00 gift cards Sallie Jones, Justine Gentile, Barbara Winkler, Cheryl Guacci, Judy Hughes, Nancy Post CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE WINNERS!!!!! 2017 UFO CHALLENGE Stack um up Roll um out Get um done! Sign up now for next year s challenge!!!!! Choose your favorite 5 UFO S and join us for the fun!! Your #1 UFO is due at the January meeting. You can turn it in at the December meeting, if you like. REMEMBER: QUILTED BOUND LABELED This is going to be a record setting year. Look for members with the ribbon with buttons on their name tags. Say Hi... make a friend...talk to someone you haven't talked to before. Let's make new friends this year. Join us for the fun!

9 Page 9 ORANGE GROVE QUILTERS GUILD Quilters UFO Challenge 2017 Stack um up Roll um out Get um done! This is a chance to turn five UFOs into quilts in only one year! Decide which of your UFOs need to be quilts... pick 5 Describe the finished quilts on the next page. Make sure that No. 1 is the one you want to work on first. Give enough information to easily identify each quilt. For example, green churn dash is a better description than Bill s birthday quilt. Fill out both copies of the list and keep one for yourself so you know what to work on next! Finished means quilted, bound and labeled. The first quilt, due on January 11, 2017 will be No. 1 on your list. It may be turned in early. After that, one quilt will be due every two months, except the fourth quilt will have 3 months because we have no meeting in July. The order of the quilts will be chosen randomly from the remaining numbers. That means that the second quilt due will not necessarily be #2 on your list. When you turn in your first UFO for inspection, you will be given a ribbon and a button to attach showing that quilt is finished. You will receive another button for each UFO as it is recorded as finished. There will be drawings for prizes after each due date is reached; therefore, all who finish even just one quilt will be eligible to win a prize that month. Other prizes will be awarded when the year is up. Due Dates: January 11 March 8 May 10 August 9 October 11

Tickets will be sold on a first come, first serve basis and we will only be selling 300. The luncheon will be held at Mile Square Golf Course. Please no children under 12 at this event. Imagine how happy you will be to take this happy quilt home! How about buying tickets for gifts for your friendship group members? Do you have a friend or relative who would love to have this cheerful quilt on their bed or couch? What a lovely Christmas gift a new quilt will make! Contact Judith Stamper for tickets or information.

12 DISPATCHER Page 12 In December, we will have three drawings-two baskets and a Jim Shore Angel (thank you, Barbara Purks). We would like red and green fabrics and Christmas themed items, please I will try to have a theme for each month s baskets in the new year. These are the themes for the first four months: January- Let It Snow ; blue and white fabric; winter theme February Hearts and Flowers ; any colors; Valentine theme March Lucky Four Leaf Clover ; greens; batiks; Luck of the Irish theme April Bunnies, Bunnies and More Bunnies ; pastels; spring/easter theme I would like to thank the membership for their generosity this past year regarding the basket contributions. Keep them coming!!! Many thanks to those of you who faithfully support our efforts by buying tickets every month! You make our efforts worthwhile. Hoping to see you at our table and hope someday YOU will have a winning ticket! Justine Gentile and Kathy Harvey LIBRARY UPDATE It has been decided, by board action, that our current book library will be closed. There have been months of discussion about the investment of time and space, for so little participation by the guild members. Things became clear to us after we had a recent unfortunate infestation of rats in the garage outside the Elk s Lodge, where our library cart is stored. There was significant damage to a number of the books, as well as the cover which was chewed through. The Elk s immediately set up traps to deal with their storage challenge. There is no concern within the Lodge itself or for books we sold earlier in the year. Friends of the Library will continue to operate, with magazines and donated books. Glenda will remain our librarian which is a board position, until we decide we need a change. I want to thank Glenda for all of her hard work. She put in hours sorting through our books, sitting out in the Elk s garage, while she tried to weed out unused books. As we proceed into the new year, Glenda will decide if fiction books, which are the most popular, will be available in some way. She will keep you posted.

13 Page 13 ORANGE GROVE QUILTERS GUILD SUSAN G KOMEN FOR THE CURE Helen Murray was the winner of the Teapot Cozy pattern kit and 3 Pat Yamin patterns including templates. These items were donated by Pat Essington and Darci Bodin. Thanks to you all for participating in my monthly drawings. Thanks so much to all of you who are so kind to bring me items to raffle off. It's wonderful to see what a compassionate group of women that we have in our Guild. Barbara Purks Philanthropy will not have sew days during December and January. Enjoy the holidays! We will, however, have pillow case kits and piecing and quilting kits available at both Guild Meetings for you to pick up and occupy those idle hours during the holidays--kidding about all those idle hours, not kidding about the kits available. Our goal next year is to make the most of the fabric we have to bring warm hugs to shut in seniors, foster kids, new babies of distressed pregnancies, military children and anyone else who needs a hug. Join with us by picking up a kit, sewing or cutting with us at sew days or by going along to the picnic at Camp Pendleton Beach next summer. Also, don't forget to bring toys/gifts to the December Guild meeting for the Marine families at Camp Pendleton. Thank you all. Wishing a blessed Christmas and happy New Year to you and your family. Becky
