1 March 1st, 2017 Volume 2 - Issue 3 Top of the Morning!!! March Aquamarine This is a month of changes Time Springs ahead and Spring officially starts. Also many people start their Spring Cleaning and purging out all the things you no longer need. It s also a great time to get the outside of your home cleaned. After the cool winter months many of our homes turn Irish - a bit of the green! Get out and enjoy the beautiful weather for soon the Aquamarine is the primary birthstone for March, and the color ranges from blue to green. In myth, the stone is said to promote knowledge and fight fear. Aquamarine folks are typically honest, imaginative, trustworthy, and very good communicators. In folklore, the bloodstone is said to attract good fortune, health, and wealth. It is sometimes used as a secondary birthstone for March as a complement or alternative to aquamarine. HEAT of summer will be here. Be sure to check the events calendar and check the bulletin board in the WWS Clubhouse for event details and sign-up sheets. Donna Right in Your Own Backyard There are so many things to see & do in Florida. Our featured area to visit this month is: Apalachicola Bay, Florida If your looking for something to do and want to spend a weekend or few days or even a week away you should consider Apalachicola Bay. The coastal communities of Apalachicola, St. George Island and Eastpoint are the heart of the Forgotten Coast and offers an authentic taste of Florida's Gulf Coast. Experience historic Apalachicola, a quaint small southern town with a strong maritime culture, an eclectic group of locally owned shops and galleries, restaurants which serve fresh local seafood, and meticulously restored B & B s and hotels. continued on page 3 1

2 A Note from the President The HOA will be taking a summer break from May to August picking back up in September. Just a reminder when residents come to a HOA meeting please remember to be respectful to others especially the board members. Discussion need to be limited to HOA issues only and personal issues should be dealt with out side of the general meeting. If you have a problem please come see me. THANKS I want to thank Marcia Norman and all the great volunteers who help to put the activities together. As we approach April, Marcia Norman, will step down from being the social club chairperson. It has been decided to split all HOA activities. Every activity we sponsor someone needs to step up and assist. We are looking for someone to do Potluck Dinners, Dinner/Dances, Annual Yard & Bake Sale, Memorial Day Pot Luck, Mother s Day and Father s Day, Sugarmill Woods Angel Tree, Valentine s Day, St. Patty s Day, Halloween & New Year s Eve. If you would like to see those activities to continue please contact any board member and sign up, we will be willing to assist. I am hoping within the end of March or sooner we will have lights up and running at the outside clubhouse, parking area. I know this has been a problem, for all of us. Then we will be looking to expand the parking area. Remember to carpool when you can for clubhouse activities. Please park on the street if necessary, or at the office until the parking area expands. Thanks for you positive feedback. Sandy Johnson mecop37@gmail.com Construction Corner. By John Hickey Our month with construction has had a slow start due to citrus county bringing back the impact fees after January 17 th. When they took effect before that everybody and there brother who are building contractors file for permits to beat the date - so that just made boxes and boxes of permits. With daily calls from me and a daily visit each day to the building permit office from Bill we have finally received ours now we can move forward. The office has been very busy with a lot of walk in traffic and a lot of lots have been reserved and home orders are starting. Watch for the red stakes as other work continues in the community. Jack is finishing painting the body of the clubhouse before the heat returns as well as many other projects. So keep your eyes open it s going to be an exciting summer with a lot of construction going on. Thanks, John 2

3 Apalachicola Bay Continued from page 1 You ll also find miles of uncrowded pristine beaches, an endless supply of shallow bays and waterways, excellent fishing and acres of National and State forests to explore. Combine all this with some of the finest oysters and seafood in the country and your stay is sure to be perfect! You could stay outside all day every day in Franklin County. Spend the day fishing, boating, kayaking, birding or hiking. Take a guided tour on the Apalachicola River, see the historic waterfront and learn about the role the river has played in the history and economy, then head up Apalachicola River to view the many wild and isolated marshes or take a trip across Apalachicola Bay to one of the barrier islands - St. Vincent Island National Wildlife Refuge, Cape St. George State Preserve and Dog Island. Or rent a boat or kayak and explore the remote bays and inlets where you ll likely catch a glimpse of a bald eagle overhead or a dolphin swimming in the surf. Land based adventures include trips into the expansive Apalachicola National Forest or Tate s Hell State Forest. Here visitors can enjoy hiking, birding, hunting and fishing on thousands of acres of primitive forests. Whether you are staying on the beach or touring the historic district in Apalachicola, bicycling is a great way to get around. Bike rentals are available on the beach and in the historic district. Browse the many shops and galleries that feature locally made, one-of-a kind works. Apalachicola Historic District has over 900 homes, buildings and sites that are listed in the National Register District some dating from the 1830s. Things To Do: A scenic walking tour of the town acquaints visitors with sites such as cotton warehouses, which housed the City s once prosperous cotton export during the 1800s, a sponge exchange and Victorian homes nestled amid magnolias. 4 Apalachicola Bay Continued from page 3 A History Rich with Steamboats, Timber and Seafood: The port of Apalachicola was established in Shipping cotton was Apalachicola s big industry and it soon became the third largest port on the Gulf of Mexico. By the 1850s, the waterfront was lined with brick warehouses and broad streets to handle the loading and unloading of cotton. Steamboats laden with cotton came down the River and were unloaded. Then small shallow-draft schooners (lighters) shuttled the cargo to ships moored offshore. As the railroads expanded throughout the United States, a new industry took shape in the City. Home to large cypress forests, Franklin County developed several big lumber mills in the late 1800s. Lumber magnates built many of the magnificent historic homes that line our streets. By the end of the 19th century, harvesting oysters and seafood became an important industry. Today Franklin County harvests more than 90 % of Florida s oysters and 10 % of the oysters consumed in the nation. Shrimp, blue crab and finfish are also very important commercially, bringing in over $14 million worth of seafood to Franklin County docks annually. We have visited this area several times and I can promise you will not be disappointed. If you love seafood, historic towns and the beautiful white sand beaches I know you ll love this area. This information was collected from the Apalachicola Chamber of Commerce site along with the photos. For more information visit their site where you can read the visitors guide, Historic Walking Guide and more! 4

6 Cottage or Shepherd's Pie I love Shepherd s Pie - It s a great recipe to make for St. Patty s Day or anytime. So when I found this easy recipe I was delighted. Now I can whip it up fast and enjoy it along with some rustic bread anytime I want. Ingredients 1 lb. ground beef (or ground lamb or turkey) One onion, chopped Frozen bag of mixed veggies, carrots, peas and corn (or use your refrigerator leftovers) Clove of garlic, minced 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (or to taste) 1 tablespoon fresh chopped thyme Kosher salt and pepper Optional - sliced mushrooms and/or diced tomatoes Mashed potatoes (I used about 2 lb. of spuds. You don t need a recipe peel, boil, mash, add butter, milk, salt, pepper and a dash of nutmeg.) ¾ lb. grated sharp cheddar cheese Instructions Sauté the onion in olive oil for a couple of minutes. Add the ground meat, stirring to break it up. Add garlic, thyme and Worcestershire sauce. Cook until meat is no longer pink. Add veggies and cook a few more minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper Put into a casserole dish, I use something in between an 8 8 and a Top with mashed potatoes and grated cheese. Cover with foil and bake at 350* about an hour, or until hot and bubbly and cheese is melted. Submitted by : Donna Haynes If you would like to share one of your favorite recipes please contact or send one to me ~ Donna or skwamama@hotmail.com To all our Neighbors & Friends at Walden Woods South Carol & I would like to take a moment to thank our wonderful neighbors during our troubled times. 9 28th annual Spring Fling Craft Show Date: March 18 & 19, :00 am to 4:00 pm 1801 NW Hwy 19 Crystal River, Florida The Citrus County Craft Council will host its 28th annual Spring Fling Craft Show on March 18 & 19, 2017, at the Crystal River Mall, in the former Belk's store, from 10 AM to 4 PM Saturday and 12 Noon to 4 PM Sunday. There will be nearly 100 artisans with a wide variety of unique, handmade treasures. Free admission... Spring is getting near and like most of us, you are probably getting ready to do spring cleaning. Not only do we want to get our homes cleaned on the inside but they might also need cleaning on the outside too. It doesn t take long for that green stuff to grow on the outside and under the carports. Even though St. Patty s Day is near I am sure you don t want your home to be wearing a bit of the green. There are a couple of people locally who do house cleaning. This one is highly recommended by many of your neighbors. He not only washes homes but also does driveways & gutter cleaning. Call: James E. Slater ***IMPORTANT MESSAGE*** The WWS Clubhouse is reserved for March 2nd for a Wedding and March 11th for a Baby Shower PLEASE do not use the clubhouse on those days Thanks Speed Limit A continuing problem. 10 Gopher Tortoise - Gopherus Polyphemus Many of you I am sure have seen these gentle creatures around our park. They are a protected species by state law! Just the other day there was a baby one in the road by my mailbox. I picked it up and put it back in the grassy area. A few thing for you to know is if you rescue one of these from the road PLEASE put it in the grass in the direction it was heading. Most of all WASH your hands as soon as you can as they can carry disease. Gopher tortoises are long-lived reptiles that occupy upland habitat throughout Florida including forests, pastures, and yards. They dig deep burrows for shelter and forage on lowgrowing plants. Gopher tortoises share these burrows with more than 350 other species, and are therefore referred to as a keystone species. Conservation of gopher tortoises depends not only on the efforts of FWC and other conservation groups, but also on Florida's citizens. There are many ways to co-exist with these gentle land tortoises. The gopher tortoise is a moderate-sized, terrestrial turtle, averaging cm (9 11 in) in length. The species is identified by its stumpy, elephantine hind feet and flattened, shovellike forelimbs adapted for digging. The shell is oblong and generally tan, brown, or gray in coloration. Gopher tortoises can live 40 to 60 years in the wild. Gopher tortoises are ancient: their ancestors are a species of land tortoise that originated in western North America some 60 million years ago. Of five North American tortoise species (genusgopherus), the gopher tortoise is the only one that occurs east of the Mississippi River. In Florida, the gopher tortoise is listed as Threatened. both the tortoise and its burrow are protected under state law. Gopher tortoises must be relocated before any land clearing or development takes place, and property owners must obtain permits from the Florida Wildlife Commission before capturing and relocating tortoises. Applications for permits are available on the FWC gopher tortoise online permitting site. Online applications are preferred to facilitate a faster review process. Before applying for a permit, please review the Gopher Tortoise Permitting Guidelines at: 10
