There were many people involved in the preparation but a special Thank you to John & Deb Emanuel for the use of the margarita machine again this year. 17 gallons of margaritas were enjoyed by the members and their guests! Also thanks to Chuck and Phil who were a big help in the cleanup on Sunday along with everyone else who was there. Thanks again to Jana & Vince O Brien for the great house BBQ at their Lake Ann cottage. Once again - good food and great company! CONGRATULATIONS was given to Mike Rogers and his girlfriend, Jo, who are engaged to be married. Mike is also going to take a year and go to school to become a Harley mechanic. He has been an auto mechanic for about 30 years. We will be looking for advice from him real soon! Riding season is slowing down but other activities are beginning to pick up. The Salvation Army Food Drive will be held again this year on the weekends of November and November We will be doing 2-3 hour shifts again this year at the Oleson s stores on Garfield and Cedar Run/North Long Lake Road. (Remember to dress warmly!) Sign-up sheets were passed around for anyone who would like to volunteer a few hours of their time to a worthy cause. If you did not attend the meeting but want to volunteer your time the sheets will be at the next Chapter meeting or you can contact Paula. The Christmas Party: Tickets this year are once again $20 per person. They are on a first come/first serve basis as we only have space to seat 110 people. Buy your ticket early - they went fast last year and there were a few people who were unable to purchase them. We will be holding the silent auction again so begin thinking if there is something you would like to donate. Rooms will be available at the Holiday Inn for $59.95 per night IF YOU RESERVE BY NOVEMBER 4 TH. We have a block of rooms held for the chapter. Alden will be our DJ for the evening again this year. If you have any suggestions for music that you would like to hear PLEASE them or talk to Cheryl or Eric. You may also bring your own CD to be played. Tom French is going to place a suggestion box at Classic for ideas of places that we can go to for our rides. These can be either our Thursday night ride or a weekend destination. Remember when making a suggestion that this is a riding club so that we can get together and enjoy the ride and the socializing. We are not a dinner club - it is not about the food-it is about the people. We have officially changed the name of our Thursday rides to Thursday Night Bike Ride rather than dinner rides. Once again - if you are not receiving the newsletter by mail and you would like to PLEASE CONTACT CHERYL (or Jeanette). She cannot get it to you if she is not aware that you want it. And most importantly - READ YOUR NEWSLETTER! There is a lot of information included in each months issue. Many of your questions can be answered in them. You can also access it online on the chapter website which is: If you are interested in holding a position as an officer there are still vacancies that need to be filled. We have had a few people show interest in them. Contact CLASSIC LEGEND TIMES

VOLUME 10, ISSUE 11 Page 3 October Chapter & Business Meeting Minutes cont d Raggs, Bob, or Classic if you are interested. Don will make the final approve of all officers. New members attending tonight are: John & Debbie Ockert, Carolyn Risk, Wild Bill Casey BUSINESS MEETING - Tuesday, October 19, 2004 Members in attendance: Raggs & Paula Mack, Lew Kirchner, Jim Dow, Bob & Sandy Oliverious, Tom French, Kim & John Lefler, Kevin & Jamie Reirson, Eric Fischer, Greg & Jeanette Sherman 1. The Salvation Army Food Drive (November and November 20-21): Eric said that Classic's trailer will be available for us to use this year. Lew and Jim also volunteered the use of their trailers for us. Bob is going to get us the drop boxes for putting the donations in. There were many people who gave us cash donations last year so this year we are going to also have the Salvation Army "money pots". We will be doing 2-3 hour shifts at both Oleson's stores and stop at 5:00 on all days. This gives us time to also drop off the donations at the Salvation Army on each day. We have one of the banners from last year and are looking for the other. The sign-up sheets will be available at the November chapter meeting. WTCM will be announcing the event prior to both weekends and will be taking donations also. 2. The Christmas Party (Saturday December 4th at the Traverse City Holiday Inn): Tickets this year are once again $20 per person. We will be holding the silent auction. Alden will be our DJ for the evening again this year at a fee of $250. Paula had a graphic of the Christmas pin that is being designed for us to see. Eric motioned to approve the design, Bob seconded the motion. All in attendance agreed. 3. Tom (Activities Director) is going to have the first six months riding schedule ready by time of the Christmas Party. He is still going to place a suggestion box at Classic for ideas of places that we can go to for our rides. It was mentioned again that members need to remember that when making a suggestion that this is a riding club - not a dinner club. We want to get together and enjoy the ride and the socializing. We have officially changed the name of our Thursday rides to "Thursday Night Bike Ride" rather than "dinner rides". Eric stated that it is NOT the destination, it is the JOURNEY along the way that we all need to remember. It is our friends we are riding with to that destination. As always - ride and have fun! (Raggs stood on his chair and did a dance - I think that he agrees with this!) 4. Much discussion was had regarding how to handle the destinations of the weekend rides. Would we have more members show up if there is a definite destination on all weekend rides or some open rides where it will be decided the day of the ride by the group? It was suggested by Greg that we have structured rides every other weekend with open rides on the opposing weekend. All attending agreed that we will definitely still have the rides such as the Baldwin Blessing and the Brimley Blessing in the UP. Bob motioned that we carry on as is for now, Greg seconded the motion. The motion passed. Eric said that we will be changing the time we will be leaving Classic on weekend rides to 11:00. The Thursday night rides will stay the same with a definite destination each week leaving Classic at 6:30 sharp. The destination of all rides will be subject to change at the last minute. If the group that has gathered agrees that another destination would be preferred they can change it. This disclaimer will be included all newsletters with the ride schedule. 5. Other business: Raggs said that it is time to do another survey of the membership for more of their input. The incoming board should consider this. All in attendance agreed that members need to remember that Eric is off duty when on the rides. He is with us to ride and have fun. If you have a business related question or problem talk to him at Classic during business hours. Since our riding season is pretty much at an end it was stated that any NEW member who will be sending in their dues now will have it applied to the 2005 riding season. Their membership will expire in December of Members need to know that they should utilize the chapter officers. If you have any questions please contact one of them. All names and numbers or addresses are listed in each newsletter. It cannot be mentioned too many times: READ YOUR NEWSLETTER! There is a lot of information included in each months issue. Many of your questions can be answered in them. You can also access it online on the chapter website which is: If you have something you would like to have published please let Cheryl know. She is always looking for things to put in. Eric said that Don at Classic will have a final decision on next years officers by our next business meeting in November. If you are interested in holding a position as an officer there are still vacancies that need to be filled. We want to run the Chapter in the best interest of its members. If you feel you can contribute something please contact Eric or Classic. Don will make the final approve of all officers. Lew made the motion to adjourn, Jim seconded. All were in favor.

Oct. Chapter Meeting Drawings Shooting The Breeze By Michael Cole It is of little good you ll do watering last year s crops with this year s tears. How many of us know someone who carries around old painful memories like a boat anchor, ready to drop at the feet of anyone who will listen? These are not memories of loved ones who died, but memories of old injustices. When I was single, I would refer to this as baggage. There was nothing worse than to take a newly divorced woman to a romantic dinner and hear all of the details about her breakup. One cannot live adequately in the present nor effectively face the future when one s thoughts are buried in the past. If you find an anchor in your baggage, give yourself a break and lighten your load. Write your injustice on a piece of paper and lock it in a drawer. Consider it removed from your inventory. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and move on, all the better, wiser and happier. Quotes are from Dr. Frederic Loomis. For inspiration, check him out on the internet. Paul Jarboe won the 50/50 drawing Ken Buquet won the August drawing for a $25 gift certificate from Classic because he was wearing a Classic t-shirt. Lew Kirchner won the Membership drawing for $20 and he was present. Next month s drawing will be for $20 You could be the Next Lucky Winner! 6 UP TO ALASKA (part 2) Logged by Jim Dow & Dick Rusas On Wednesday the 16th of June, we depart Anchorage on the Glenn Highway #1 to Tok. More Magnificent sights; mountains, glaciers, rivers, lakes and the ever present colorful hot pink fireweed that thrives along the northern highways and springing up rapidly in burned-over terrain. And of course, on this highway are many road repair stops which obviously makes the going slow, but allows us to savor the moment. After a night in Tok, we head south along the Alaska Highway to customs at the border of the Yukon and down to Haines Junction and a night to remember. We check in to the Cozy Corner Motel, have dinner and are having a scotch and cigar on our porch about 9 p.m. I m in making another round of drinks and Dick starts yelling. I run out to see what s going on, and CRUNCH!!! A beat up old pickup truck rolls on top of my bike. I m about to cry my stomach is in knots and I m about to die Surprise, there s no one in the truck. The driver, Mike, checking into the motel, forgot to put the brake on or in park, so the ugly truck rolled down the gravel lot onto my beautiful machine. So, we call the RCMP, do the report, get a tow truck to lift the pickup off of my bike, set it on the stand, put in a quart of oil, start it up and go for a test ride. All s well, except the front engine guard is so crooked that the foot pegs are eight inches off. Anyhow, it is rideable. So, the young man, Mike, who is a helicopter pilot with the government asks if we d like to take a ride to see the sights from the air. Up we go, over the snow capped mountains that rolled on forever, the rivers, lakes, forests, sun and sky. What a beautiful way to settle down after the event. Upon landing, we go to a local pub, get to know one another, and proceed to get shit-faced. The bike had lots of superficial damage, but was rideable, so off we go in the am for a great day of riding, another night in Whitehorse and visit the Yukon Harley-Davidson to clean the bike and get a rough estimate. On Saturday the 19th we re on the road, visiting Rancheria River Falls and taking in more of the beauty on the way to Watson Lake. Up Sunday to ride the Cassiar Highway #37, which offers outstanding scenery and good wildlife viewing, as well as quite a few miles of gravel roads again, and in general, a somewhat rougher road than the Alaska Highway. We arrive in Stewart, British Columbia for the night after stopping to view and photograph the magnificent Bear Glacier as it calves its icebergs into the Pacific. We plan to cross from Stewart, B.C. to Hyder, Alaska by Ferry to see the bear fish for salmon, but unfortunately, we re told that the salmon run won t start for two more weeks and the bear won t be down until the fish start to run. So. We scrub crossing to Hyder in the morning and head south to Smithers, were we visit the Harley dealer for a new tire for Dick. We re told to get up and on the road east early, because the highways could be closed due to forest fires. We did see and smell the smoke from a distance, but made it to Prince George, B.C. in time. We did witness the ravages and devastation from prior forest fires along our route. Amazing how rapidly the second growth takes hold. We take Highway 97 south to Quesnel, were we bunk in for the night before heading down near Vancouver on the 23rd. Again, the mountains are spectacular, snow covered peaks, gorges, valleys, ravines, rivers, waterfalls, and forests through which we weave and roll with the wind in our faces. All five senses are fully alive and at work, as was the case for the entire trip. We spend the night in the small village of Kamloops on Highway #1 in British Columbia. On the 24th, we weave through the Manashee and Selkirk Mountains, where I ve heli skied, Glacier Pass and Kootenay National Park and cut south of 95 to Creston B.C. near the U.S. Border. Bikers we ve met all along the way have rerouted us from our original trip plan several times, and this was one of those detours. FABULOUS! Listen to the locals From Creston we cross into the U.S. in Idaho, pick up Highway US 2 in Bonners Ferry and head east to Kalispell, Montana for the night. I did a side trip to Whitefish and the Big Mountain Ski Resort in the early evening to see what this looks like in the summer. I ve skied there in the past. Our plan is to do Glacier National Park and Logan Pass in the morning, but the weather doesn t allow our ride up to this elevation, so we forego that and ride to Great Falls, Montana, skirting the south side of Glacier. At Great Falls, my battery pukes and we call Harley Roadside Assistance for a tow. We take Sunday off to sight see the falls, the Lewis and Clark Museum and Exposition, and generally relax. I pick up my bike from the Big Sky Harley-Davidson dealer by eleven a.m. and we re back on the road south in Montana. We cross the Continental Divide, go through the Blackfeet Nation, share the highway with cowboys on horseback driving cattle over the road on open range, ride the switchbacks of Bridger pass, go by Bridger Bowl where I ski the Cold Smoke each winter and arrive in Bozeman for the night. I suggest to Dick that we stay an extra day to visit the museum of the Rocky Mountains at Montana State University, for which he happily goes along. But, Dick is getting lonely. He calls Kathy and tries to arrange having her fly out to meet in Rapid City, South Dakota. Sounded like a good plan to me, but the deal fell through. Poor Dick On June 30th, we head south to West Yellowstone, taking a detour up to Big Sky Ski Resort where I spend a week or two each February. The top of Lone Peak Mountain is still covered with snow. The village of West Yellowstone is busy with tourists, so we are on the bikes early on Thursday to beat the crowd touring Yellowstone National Park. Circumnavigating the park was one of the most enjoyable rides of our whole trip. Maximum speed limits are 45 mph, so it gave us the opportunity to enjoy the sights, the tight twisties, and the wildlife. We stopped to view the firehole, Old Faithful, Yellowstone Lake, and the bison, bear, elk, moose, sheep and eagles. We viewed more wildlife here in four hours than we had for the entire trip. Page 6 CLASSIC LEGEND TIMES

VOLUME 10, ISSUE 11 Page 7 We exited Yellowstone Park at the northeast side and rode the Beartooth Pass Highway 212 up to Redlodge. This is one of the most exciting rides in the country, at least in my experience. Beartooth Mountains are rugged, snow capped peaks with Beartooth Pass almost eleven thousand feet above sea level with grades of 10% and drop offs of five hundred to five thousand feet on either side while traversing the ridges. On one of the ten percent grades, we stopped to assist a motorist whose vehicle had overheated. His cell phone didn t work, so Dick used his to call 911. From Red Lodge, we exit the mountains to ride the prairies to Rapid City, South Dakota. Since there was so much to see and do in this area, we decided to spend several days here. Dick had never been to Sturgis, so even though it wasn t bike week, some vendors were beginning to set up and we were able to surmise what it would be like in August. Of course we did the Black Hills Spearfish Canyon, Iron Mountain Road, Needles Highway, Mt. Rushmore with all the sweeping curves, tight twisties, and tunnels. Here we also saw first hand, crews cleaning up from a recent forest fire that ravaged a wide swath of the Black Hills. The one really great result of riding this area a month before bike week was that there wasn t much traffic on these roads. It was much more relaxing and a lot sager taking this spectacular drive through the pine and spruce forests, meadows surrounded by birch and aspen and the rugged granite mountains. We spent the 4th walking the Holiday Festival in Rapid City, beer tent, concert, etc., etc., etc. On Monday, we visited the Black Hills Harley Store for a new headlight for my bike, a few mementos and pins. We re programmed for our ride home, so head out early Tuesday for a short drive on I 90 to Wall, D.S. to visit Wall Drug for free coffee and good breakfast. I m sure you all have seen highway signs advertising wall drug the world over. Quite an Emporium. After breakfast, we head to the Badlands National Park. The bands of colors of the peaks, gullies, buttes and wide prairies of the badlands have long attracted the interest and praise of travelers with a mix of dread and fascination. Now we pound I 90 east, spending the night in Worthington, Minnesota, then cutting across central Wisconsin to Escanaba, Michigan for our last night, enjoying a great steak and beer at Herford and Hopps. The ride home to Traverse City was in the rain. We contemplated heading back to warmer Alaska All in all, our journey took us through two countries, nine states, six provinces or territories, nine national parks, over twenty Harley-Davidson dealers, over fifty pit stops and at least 250 gallons of gas a piece. We met many, many fun and wonderful people. Each of us replaced one rear tire, had two oil changes, replaced one headlight and of course, I survived the C-R-U-N-C-H. In just under six weeks we logged ten thousand two hundred plus miles. And yes, we re still on first name basis and talking to each other. Dick and I are easy to get along with and on a trip of this magnitude, the travelers must compromise, which we did as long as we followed MY trip plan We were so very blessed to have had this experience, and thank our loves, Pam and Kathy, and our families for supporting us. And of course for, for having someone up there to watch over us, assuring we arrived home safely. Remember, it s the journey, but the destination is important also...do IT!!!

2005 CHAPTER OFFICERS We Need Volunteers! We need members to volunteer to fill leadership roles in our Chapter. A few have already stepped forward to assume a leadership position, but we need more. As you can see on page 2 of this newsletter, we have 16 officer positions with 9 Road Captains. That seems like a lot of people for a club that has the simple mission of riding and having fun. However, even a simple club like ours needs to plan rides and events, safely execute the plans, maintain membership records, communicate with the members and of course, get member feedback to decide just what is fun. By having so many officers, hopefully, these tasks don t take a lot of any one member s time after all, all the members, including the officers, want to have fun at the Chapter rides and events. Motivations to volunteer as an officer are varied sometimes its just your turn, other times its because you have some ideas, and sometimes its because you have a particular skill or talent to offer the Chapter. Whatever the reason, now is the time to volunteer as we like to announce new officers at the Christmas Party. Please contact Eric or Don at Classic if you would like to learn more or just put your name next to one of the officer titles. It s also the time to say THANK YOU to our current officers. They didn't have to serve our Chapter, but they did...and we all had fun this year because of their time and efforts. And THANK YOU to all who have helped our Chapter ride and have fun through out our history. Don Pishney Grandma s Kitchen Celebrating Eric s 50th Ken Buquet Wins! Page 8 CLASSIC LEGEND TIMES
