United will offer five flights weekly. The 108-mile trip will take less than an hour. Pueblo is not currently a destination from DIA. Denver Gets Direct Flights to Hailey Colorado travelers will be able to fly nonstop between Denver and Sun Valley, Idaho, starting July 2, 2014, when United Airlines begins flying from DIA to Friedman Memorial Airport (SUN), located in Hailey, Idaho, which is 13 miles south of Sun Valley. United will offer one flight daily in each direction. Transitions and Installations on the Hotel and Transit Center With his hands locked around the wooden handle of a large silver sledgehammer, Mayor Michael B. Hancock commemorated a significant construction milestone on the Hotel and Transit Center project in August As hundreds of employees, elected officials and aviation industry professionals watched, Mayor Hancock knocked a large silver pin from an anchor for a terminal roof tension cable, starting the transition of roof cable anchoring to temporary March 24, 1843, saw the first transit company formed in London. 2 towers, which have now supported the Jeppesen roof during these last 19 months of HTC construction. Looking north from Peña Boulevard, construction on the14-story hotel progresses steadily. Workers are currently pouring concrete for the 12th floor. In March, the tension of the roof is being transitioned again, this time to permanent anchors on the new public plaza, located between Jeppesen Terminal and the new hotel and transit center building. In February, workers began taking down the non-structural elements of the towers. During the week of March 3, they added new tensioning cables to the terminal roof structure and forged new connections to the public plaza tent anchors. Next, they will begin tensioning the cables and preparing to shift the terminal roof load. Meanwhile, across the plaza, the first panes of glass are now being put in place on the hotel skeleton. These panes are the first of more than 222,000 square feet of exterior glass walls that will cover the hotel when it's complete. That's about the same square footage as four football fields. Also on the project: Workers are pouring the hotel's level 12 Walls are going up inside the hotel's future conference center All of the steel is now in place for the public plaza canopy Track is being installed at the train platform for the new RTD East Rail Line Stringfellow. The transport presumably was by balloon, and the company failed. The first parachute jump from a powered airplane happened on March 1, Albert Barry made the jump in Saint Louis, Mo. Some sources say the first jump actually was in 1911 by Grant Morton. Twenty-one years ago, on March 25, 1993, Barbara Harmer became the first woman to co-pilot a commercial supersonic flight. 3 Walls are going up inside the hotel's future conference center. DIA's new Westin hotel, which is being built just south of Jeppesen Terminal, will be a facility that will be especially convenient for business travelers. Workers to Repair Peña Boulevard from West of Tower Road to E-470 Work is now underway to rebuild a highly traveled section of Peña Boulevard from just west of Tower Road to E-470. Denver International Airport's contractor began work to reconstruct the approximate one-mile section of Peña Boulevard on March 10. The $9.6 million project is expected to be complete this year just prior to the busy Thanksgiving holiday. More than 72,000 vehicles travel this section of Peña Boulevard each day. Deterioration of the concrete on the one-mile section from just west of Tower Road to E-470 has progressed to the point that routine maintenance is no longer effective. Crews are currently constructing a temporary bridge that will carry traffic over Tower Road while construction is ongoing. The bridge will be part of a temporary realignment of Peña Boulevard that will allow workers to reconstruct one side of Peña Boulevard while traffic uses the other side of the roadway. "Peña Boulevard is now about 20 years old and is showing the wear and tear normal for a concrete roadway," said Dave LaPorte, Denver's deputy manager of aviation for Airport Infrastructure Management. DIA will maintain four travel lanes, two in each direction, for Peña Boulevard traffic throughout the construction project. During construction, speed limits in the area will be reduced to 45 mph. Drivers heading to DIA should allow for extra travel time.

Denver's Top Destinations for Spring Break First, let's clarify the headline. High school and college scholars take spring breaks at different times, so it is difficult to determine the favorite places where they like to go when classes are on hiatus. So, we decided that most students take a spring break in March. Therefore, our statistics tell us that the 10 most popular nonstop destinations from DIA in March are:

A quick scrutiny of the stats reveals that a majority of these ranked locales have sand. Not necessarily, beach sand, although four of these 10 places have beaches. You may not think Orlando has sand, but it does if you count the sandy soil that is prevalent there (also the beaches of its many lakes). Looking at the beaches, the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans are represented, as well as the Gulf of Mexico.

Phoenix is the destination that ranks highest among Denver's March travelers. Pictured above is the 17th hole at Papago Golf Course, which is owned by the City of Phoenix. City of Phoenix/Tony Roberts Photography. Photo courtesy of the Greater Phoenix Convention and Visitor's Bureau. Perhaps not surprisingly, there is only one cold-weather destination: Aspen. Las Vegas' attraction is self-evident. Phoenix, Tucson, and Palm Springs are probably chosen for their paucity of snow and for their abundance of golf courses. Of course, not all the passengers going to these cities are students. Surprisingly, Cancun, which is becoming legendary as a spring break mecca is only #22 in the rankings. It looks as if Fort Lauderdale at least from Denver is the beach location of choice. If you want to check out Ft. Lauderdale beach conditions, visit or look at the Fort Lauderdale beach cam: Seagrape and palm trees line the entrance to Hollywood Beach on a beautiful morning in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. DIA Exceeds Federal Goals for Minority Participation in Airport Construction Projects DIA has surpassed the goal set by the FAA for the percentage of work on airport runway pavement rehabilitation and construction performed by companies owned by socially and economically disadvantaged individuals. Because the airport receives FAA funding, it must participate in the federal Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Program (DBE), which provides opportunities for certified companies to bid on airport construction projects or be involved as subcontractors. While the 2013 FAA goal for DIA was set at 17.8 percent, the airport achieved a DBE participation rate of percent. Goals are measured as a percentage of contract dollars. In 2013, DIA received $27.9 million from the FAA to pay for runway pavement rehabilitation and improvements. Of that amount, $5.2 million was paid to DBE-certified companies that worked on those projects. "Denver International Airport has made it a priority to embrace inclusivity and to provide significant participation by minority- and women-owned businesses in all airport projects and programs," said Kim Day, Denver's manager of aviation. "We are proud to have exceeded the federal goals." Visit for more information about business opportunities at DIA. Follow this link to Denver's Office of Economic Development to find out how to qualify as a certified DBE company: business certification.

Honoring Cesar Chavez March 31 is Cesar Chavez Day an official holiday for the City of Denver and recognized by the state of Colorado, although it is not a paid holiday for state employees. Last year, President Obama issued a proclamation declaring March 31, 2013, as Cesar Chavez Day. The president said, "More than anything, we remember Cesar Chavez for lending voice to the voiceless. When no one seemed to care about the invisible farm workers who picked our nation's food, beset by poverty and cheated by growers, a courageous man dedicated to dignity stood up and spoke out." People across the world no doubt will become more familiar with Chavez and his place in American history when a new movie about him opens March 28. The movie is directed by Diego Luna and stars Michael Peña, America Ferrera, Rosario Dawson and John Malkovich. Visit CesarChavezMovie to learn about the film and youtube.com to see the official trailer. Chavez, who was born on March 31, 1927, near his family's homestead in the North Gila River Valley outside Yuma, Arizona, became a migrant farm worker as a child, when the Great Depression caused his family to lose their farm and country store. As his parents moved from job to job he went to 38 different schools before deciding after eighth grade to work full-time to bring in extra money for the family. Having experienced the poverty, humiliations and injustices firsthand as a migrant worker, he wanted to change conditions for the people picking fruit and vegetables in this country's orchards and fields, so they could have a better life. That goal became his life's work. Under his leadership, the United Farm Workers the first successful farm workers union in America was formed in the 1960s. Some of the things that he and other union organizers accomplished were: The first real collective bargaining agreements between farm workers and growers Union contracts requiring rest periods, toilets in the fields, clean drinking water, hand washing facilities, and other safety and workplace enhancements The first comprehensive union medical benefits for farm workers and their families through a joint union-employer health and welfare fund, the Robert F. Kennedy Medical Plan The Juan de la Cruz Pension Plan for retired farm workers Affordable housing Chavez, a World War II veteran, embraced a life of voluntary poverty, according to the foundation named after him. "He never earned more than $6,000 a year, never owned a house, and when he died at the age of 66 in 1993, left no money behind for his family," says a foundation biography (chavezfoundation.org). Although he left no estate for his wife, eight children, and 31 grandchildren, he

left a legacy of commitment and service to better people's lives. "Si se puede!" ("Yes, it can be done!") was his motto. Senator Robert F. Kennedy said Chavez was "one of the heroic figures of our time." When Chavez died in 1993, an estimated 25,000 people marched in his funeral procession. Steve's Snappin' Dogs Craving a Jersey hot dog? Flying out of DIA? You don't have to put your taste buds on hold until you reach Newark. Just head to the west side of Concourse B. That's where you'll find Steve's Snappin' Dogs a brainchild of restaurateur Steve Ballas. His restaurant is a well-known Denver brand, and he has begun to offer his unique menu to DIA's passengers. Steve Ballas beckons hungry air travelers to his new Steve's Snappin' Dogs outlet, located at the west side of DIA's Concourse B. The menu features Steve's award-winning, gourmet hot dogs delivered directly from New Jersey. The menu also includes burgers, and sides such as skin-on French fries, panko-breaded onion rings, sweet potato tots and Steve's famous deep-fried green beans. The restaurant will offer dine-in eating and "Steve's On the Go" for quick service. The restaurant and bar will be open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. "My wife, Linda, and I are thrilled by the impact that we have made in Denver, to travelers and residents alike," said Ballas. "We are honored to have been selected to represent Colorado for the first gourmet hot dog concept at DIA, the fifthbusiest airport in the country." Steve's local partner for the airport restaurant is Keith Montoya, who began operating at DIA in 2013 through the airport's Retail Merchandising Unit cart and kiosk program. "The business outreach efforts by DIA are helping to bring new entrepreneurs like myself into the exciting and competitive aviation market," Montoya said. Aviator's Sports Bar & Bar-B-Que

DIA's Concourse B mezzanine (two levels above the train station) has a new restaurant: the Aviator's Club, which is a sports bar and also a high-quality barbecue establishment. It offers a variety of grilled and smoked meats, such as chicken, chicken wings, brisket, pork, ribs and beef accompanied by an assortment of sides, such as salads, potato salad, beans and beverages. The restaurant is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The new Aviator's Club, which specializes in barbecue, is now open on the mezzanine level of Concourse B Center Core.
