Barony of Stierbach 3 From Your Baron Colum Maxwell and Baroness Briana Maclukas Greetings from Baron Colum and Baroness Briana unto the populace of the most wonderful Barony of Stierbach We have returned victorious from the Great War to the north. In our absence, our loyal servants in our westernmost lands defended us with honor. A number of our good gentles were recognized for their service and participation, both on and off the battlefield at the great Pennsic war. Stierbachi were everywhere, it seemed whether serving at Troll, Heralds Point, or Chiurgeon; participating in arts and sciences; teaching classes; or fighting on the battlefield or shooting on the archery range. We have become a force to be recognized, and recognized we are! forth. We lift our heads with pride whenever Stierbach goes We were pleased to meet a number of newcomers to our lands, and look forward to furthering those acquaintances. And we have forged friendships with those in far distant lands. Our special thanks go to Lord Stefan von Kiel, who secured our encampment space, saw to it that all were comfortable, and found a secure fortress where we could cache supplies until our next campaign in the north. Also, thanks to Lord Iustinos who spent his sole weekend at Pennsic ensuring that the camp shower was set up and working properly. Thanks also to Lord Enequey and Juliane for spending a good portion of the week working on scrolls. Looking forward, there are many opportunities for us

4 4 The Bull all to participate over the next couple of months. Begin now to gather and/or make items that you can donate to the Silent Auction at Holiday Faire. We would like to have 2 full sets of armor for any new people that should show up at a practice. I would prefer any pieces you have to be donated instead of loaned because loaned implies that it may be retrieved and I would prefer to have the bag stay complete. Plus there is a nice donation form we can give you for a tax deduction. Here is a quick list of what I'm looking for. Let me know if you have any pieces to donate. 2 helms 2 sets of elbows 2 sets of knees

6 6 The Bull 2 pieces of body armour (prefer something like a coat of plates so will fit more than one size) 2 gorgets 2 pairs of half gauntlets 2 basket hilts 2 pieces of sword length rattan 1 shield Barony of Stierbach 31 a paid one. Site: Prince William County Fairgrounds, Dumfries Rd, Manassas, VA Site Restrictions: Site is Dry. Autocrat: Sean MacKelly (Matthew Kelly), Pintail Ct, Purcellville, VA (540) , theermine@aol.com If you should have any pieces, even ones that could use a little repair, and would like to donate to a good cause, please let me know what you have and when I can pick it up. Stierbach is looking to get a heavy fighter practice of our own. The plan is to have a practice, not just a bash session. So I would like to know what day of the week would you like? Weeknight or weekend? Indoor only or is outdoor okay? A big question is where to have it? What part of Stierbach (Sterling, Loudon, Manassas, etc)? Also, does anyone know of a location where we could have a practice? I'll put together a list of suggestions and then get everyone's opinion. I have also been accumulating loaner gear for those who would like to try heavy fighting before buying armor. If anyone has any armor to donate, please let me know. I'll be at the Baronial business meeting next week if you want to drop it off. Thank you all. Only reservation is Barony of Stierbach 7 Greetings, From the President of the SCA, Inc., Linda Moore, and the Exchequer, Susan Earley, Concerning the Hurricane Katrina We are all saddened and affected by the terrible aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, especially those of us in Meridies and Gleann Abhann. I know many of you have already opened your hearts, pocketbooks, houses and sewing rooms, etc to the victims. Thank you. This support of each other is one of the things that makes the SCA so strong. Below is a message from Susan Early, the Society Exchequer, regarding financial donations for relief. I know this information has been widely distributed, but we wanted to make sure everyone who needs it gets it. Each kingdom should have a disaster coordinator in place through the seneschal s office. There is a web site referenced below maxandlethrenn.org/hurricane_relief/ that is being coordinated through the Kingdom of Meridies. It contains lots of good information on how you can help, so please bookmark this for future reference, and check here if you want to do something specific. With warm regards, and hope for the future, Linda Moore President, SCA Inc.

8 8 The Bull SCA BRANCHES MAY DONATE TO OTHER 501 (c)(3) ORGANIZATIONS. This includes the American Red Cross, Unicef, the Salvation Army, etc. SCA BRANCHES MAY DONATE TO OTHER SCA BRANCHES. However, please wait at least a month or two, so that the exchequer is ready to handle the donations. They may have RealLife(tm) to handle right now and sending them a check when they have no access to the bank would not be helpful. If a branch wants to donate SCA equipment or regalia, please check with the branch first to make sure that what you want to give them will be a) needed and used, and b) not also promised from another branch. No one wants to have 12 sets of thrones and no banners, coronets or pavilions. SCA BRANCHES MAY *NOT* DONATE TO ORGANIZATIONS THAT ONLY BENEFIT SCA MEMBERS. There are already two charities set up to specifically benefit SCA members - Medieval Disaster Relief ( and Chateau Teafort Foundation ( SCA funds may NOT be directed to these organizations, but both organizations will happily take personal donations. You can even get a spiffy CD from Chateau Teafort. It is *excellent* that we have an organization where so many people are willing to help out our cousins in the affected areas. I would caution that any aid that requires attention from any of the affected people right now would not be as helpful as it would be in a couple of months. They have more basic needs to attend to at this time, and those needs are best handled by the professionals. Barony of Stierbach 29 please contact Kim of Wolfshaven at kim_wolfshavensca@yahoo.com. Alexandre de Tourouvre AoA Eloise le Gardeur AoA This many matters of importance having been accomplished and the day having aged to evening, Their Majesties bid the Order of Chivalry to take council with them and then closed Their court. It is possible that at this meeting of the Chivalry it was decided to place the good Justus fitz Ternon, Royal Bard of Atlantia, on vigil to contemplate joining that most august order (an event which indeed took place upon the 18th night of August, A.S. XL, as I beheld myself) but as I was not present at that meeting of the Knights I can only speculate. Long live King Robert and Queen Denise! Your servant for better or worse, Olagh Ruaidhri an Cu Barony of Stierbach 21 From the Atlantian Keepers of the Clewe and the Page s Academy With the permission of the Keepers of the Clewe (Atlantia's Knitting Guild) and the Page's Academy, Halima al-shafi'i issues the following challenge to the knitters and Pages of the kingdom: Each knitter is challenged to find and teach a Page (or Pageaged child, 9-14) to knit. Pages are encouraged to seek out knitters. Knitters will create squares that are 7" by 9" in any stitch. Knitters will display their work at Kingdom 12th night. All knitters are invited to knit for this event, and each local group is encouraged to have a local point of contact for this challenge. At 12th night, the local group with the most squares will win a prize sponsored by Sayyida Halima al- Shafi'i. Also, a special prize will be awarded to the Page who creates the most squares. After 12th night, the squares will be donated to Michael's Arts and Crafts stores for their "Warm Up America" program. The stores will join the squares into afghans to donate to the needy. 17 20 The Bull of his faith, reform Judaism, his family and I will be holding a Sh'loshim - a celebration of the life of our lost loved one. It will be held on September 18th, from 2:00pm to 7:00pm, at Brookfield Park: 7417 Floyd Avenue, Springfield VA. This will be a day of enjoying the activities Sandor loved including SCA dancing and fencing as well as modern folk dancing and a ham radio demonstration. We will play from about 2-4:00pm, then we will move into storytelling. At this time, everyone is invited to share stories about Sandor in bardic-circle style. At around 5:00, Cantor Steinberg will come and lead us in a Jewish memorial ceremony much like the one held immediately after his death. Afterwards, we will continue to share time together and clean up by about 7:00. Please visit for more details about this event. This will be a pitch-in food event, and we will post on this blog the guidance for what to bring (haven't figured it out yet as of this writing). Please dress comfortably for being outside all day and wear SCA garb if you wish. I am deeply grateful to all the people that made Sandor's entrance into the SCA a happy one. Having found myself a mate not yet in but compatible with the SCA, it brought me no end of joy to see him entering the Barony of Ponte Alto with such enthusiasm. He loved the dancing, fencing, costuming, and friends he found in the SCA. I thank you for being there for him. Please contact me at orange@indy.net if you have any questions, and please forward this to appropriate lists. Any and all are welcome to the Sh'loshim, and I need help getting word out to Atlantian lists.
