A Newsletter for Troop 10 Scouts and Their Families Troop 10 Times October 2002 Scoutmaster Minute By Mr. Ryan J., Scoutmaster The first order of business this month is to congratulate our new Troop's new Scout leadership. Working with this year's Senior Patrol Leader, Carl N., will be our newly elected Patrol Leaders: Kevin F., Jeff R., David H., Chris P., Adam S. and Tom Z. These young men will in turn appoint Scouts to the remaining positions of leadership within Troop 10. It's a great group and I am looking forward to working with this fine leadership team. Our camping program got off to a great start with the Illini Jamboree. We joined over 4000 other Scouters in camping at the former Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul. We actually were camped right next to a runway that could land a 747! The street fest before the game, Illini victory, the campus tour, the air force museum and the fireworks all were part of a really good time. In October, we will continue our season with the Fall Camporee. This will consist of a gathering of all of the troops in our Signal Hill District at the Hollows in nearby Cary. Troop 10 is one of the three sponsors. This Camporee will have a "Northwest Pioneering" theme and will consist of a 2- night campout, with a number of games, events and contests through out the day Saturday. There will even be a fishing derby. It should be a great time for new Scouts as well as our veterans. It is also an opportunity to invite WEBELOS Scouts to visit the troop for the day. It should be a great time. We are now closing in on our first Court of Honor for this Scouting year on October 21 S`. Now is the time for all Scouts who have merit badges or rank advancement in progress to try to wrap up their requirements so that they can be recognized at that meeting. The last opportunity for Scoutmaster Conferences and Boards of Review prior to that Court of Honor is October 7 th, so plan accordingly. While Scouting is about learning, fun and advancement, Scouting is also about service. In addition to the various Eagle projects of our older Scouts, we also serve our community through our adoption of the stretch of Route 59 just south of the Village of Barrington. Mrs. W., our Troop Service Project Leader, will be coordinating our fall cleanup of our highway. It will take place on the morning of October 12 th. We will also be looking for a few Scouts for another service opportunity on October 26 th to help the Barrington United Methodist Church, our sponsoring organization, in cleaning up from their rummage sale. In keeping with our troop philosophy of "many hands make light work," please mark your calendar and plan on joining us. Yours in Scouting, Ryan J. 2 The campout to the Champaign area was not my favorite campout because I really don't like football. It is fun to say "Arkansas rules" and have everyone look at you. (Jeff) Playing in the soybean field, hiding from people, was pretty fun because it was almost impossible to see people if they were lying down, which, of course, we never did, if Mr. J. is reading this. The Dominos Pizza near the front was awesome compared to the remains of our bacon sandwiches we made on our grill. It was really weird being right on the runway and having an active runway right next to us. It was really nice to be able to get home by 11 in the morning. Michael R. Junior Venture Service Projects There are 2 opportunities for Scouts to earn Service hours in October: Route 59 cleanup on Saturday 12th October United Methodist Church Rummage sale clear up on Saturday 26th October These are projects in which Troop 10 has been involved in the past & afford all Scouts the chance to earn Service hours, which are needed for advancement. Flyers & sign up sheets will be available at the Troop meetings. Please contact Stella W for further information. There are, however 2 inns right on Route 2 in nearby Oregon, Illinois. The Paddlewheel Inn ( ) as of September 23, did have rooms available for $99 per night (includes 2 queen sized beds). Members of our Troop 10 family have stayed there in the past. Another inn which may be availible is the Chateau Lodge ( ). Thanks! Mr. J.

ATTENTION ALL LIFE SCOUTS!!! This is to serve as a reminder to each of you. When you come to meet with Mr. C. and/or myself, you are required to be in your uniform. We will not make any exceptions. The only time your Class A is not required will be on the Monday nights when we are having a red shirt meeting. Otherwise, Class A uniform is mandatory. This includes meetings at locations other than regularly scheduled meetings. If you do come to a meeting without your uniform on, the meeting will not take place. You will be required to call one of us back to reschedule the meeting. This is not intended to be difficult or unfair. You need to remember that you are working towards Boy Scouts highest rank. If we are going to be talking about your Eagle Project or any other items regarding your advancement, you will be in uniform. Make it easy for Mr. C. and myself by always being in your uniform and you discussing the project with us, not a parent. Thank you, Mr. Hank S. Calling All Venture Scouts! Have you heard the latest buzz? We have a new style, a new look, and a major amount of cool things in store for you! Mr. R. and I have been asked to take over the Venture group/mob. Mr. J. is giving us a lot of latitude to do off sight meetings (like Laser Tag, Mini Golf, Rock Climbing, Bungee Volleyball, etc. etc. etc.) once a month, instead of attending one of the monthly Troop 10 meetings, have our own area on campouts, and have an extra activity after dinner on the Saturday of any campout (however he did nix any idea of running through the nearest town with torches and spears hey we can't get everything the first year!). We hit the town at Devil's Lake last spring after Saturday dinner for some bumper cars I mean go-carting and something that resembled mini golf. Mr. R. and I hope to see more of you at the meetings. Come on back and check us out! Mr. S. SM Venture, ASM- Troop 10 TROOP 10 TRAINING By Mr. Tom K. 5 A Newsletter for Troop 10 Scouts and Their Families Troop 10 Times November 2002 Scoutmaster Minute By Mr. Ryan J., Scoutmaster What a great start! In our second campout this year, the Fall Camporee, our boys not only had a great time, but also picked up awards in several of the Great Northwest events, including the Flapjack Relay, the two-handed saw and log rolling. We all owe a special note of thanks to our own Assistant Scoutmaster, Hank Stuchel, who helped coordinate and run the event. Our upcoming campout is the ever-popular Family Campout at White Pines State Park on November This is the campout every year where families of our Scouts are invited to join us. You are welcome to either camp out with us, make a day trip and join us just for Saturday, or to camp with us, but spend the night at one of the nearby Oregon, Illinois hotels. It's a beautiful place to visit in the fall. The highlights of this outing will include bringing out our familiar rope bridge (a great opportunity to practice our knot tying skills) and the famous Troop 10 Turkey Fry. Assistant Scoutmaster Tom K. has agreed to serve as the "Turkeymeister" and coordinate that part of the enterprise. Get your permission slips and reservations in as soon as you can. This month we will kickoff our new meeting format with our Venture patrol members (the High School members) having a special outside activity for one meeting each month instead of joining the rest of us at our regular troop meeting at Grove Avenue School. Jeff S. and Tom R. have agreed to serve as the Assistant Scoutmasters for our Venture boys and help them put together these events. This first Venture Patrol meeting will be at a local billiards hall for a pool-playing event. This new format will also give us the opportunity to work separately with our Middle School members on basic skills and advancement on those meeting days. As we look forward to December, we will have our second annual Cabin Campout on December 14th and 15th. This two day- one night event gives the Scouts a great break during the holiday season (and their parents can get a "Scout-less" shopping opportunity, too!). This year's campout will be a unique opportunity for our Scouts to make their own snowshoes. Assistant Scoutmaster Bill T. is doing all the planning and the idea is to have special snowshoe kits prepared so that the Scouts will be able to go home with their own completed pair of snowshoes. This looks to be a very memorable experience, so mark your calendars and plan on joining us! 6 Ship 10 Is Preparing to Set Sail Again Teens who enjoy sailing and other water-based activities are invited to become Sea Scouts. High school age Boy Scouts, non-scouts and young ladies are welcome to join. To find out more about the Sea Scout program, see Scoutmaster Julian has agreed that the boys in the Troop may have the attendance at the Sea Scout meetings & activities count towards their attendance requirements for advancement. Questions about the Ship or Sea Scouts? call Adults who are interested in sailing are also welcome to get involved. Thanks Ted Kr. & Debbie K. Ship 10 Committee Attention Order of the Arrow members: Order of the Arrow meetings are held the first Thursday of each month at Immanual Lutheran on Plum Grove Rd. in Palatine. All OA members are welcome and encouraged to attend. The next meeting will be November 7th at 7:30pm. If you need more information or need a ride, call your OA rep, Kevin K. at or Mr. J. Service Projects We had a very good turnout for the Route 59 clean up on 12th October. There were 14 Scouts & several adults. Thank you to all who participated...there were many orange garbage bags left on Route 59, so a lot was accomplished Attention All Parents: Please send your address to Carole Z. She will create a master list to be shared within our Troop. In your message, please include your full name as well. Thanks! Stella W. Attention All Scouts: Every Scout needs to get the family life merit badge. You're already stuck seeing your family 24 hours a day, so you might as well get as much out of it as you can. Three great things come out of it. One, you get an eagle required merit badge. Two you learn a lot about organizing projects. Finally, a good reason all the sappy boy Scouts should do it, you get to bond with your family (just kidding). It does require some work. Nate H. To All New Scouts: Make sure to get the first three ranks done and out of the way. Tenderfoot, T' d class and l' class are all incredibly easy to get, especially when compared to Star or Life. Try to get at least one requirement done each meeting, like tying knots (and come prepared, that leaves a great impression on adults). Then at campouts get one or two requirements like cooking a meal, or setting up a tent. Its best to get all three of these before Napowan, that way all you need to at Napowan is concentrate on getting merit badges. It really isn't as hard as it seems. Nate H.

Boy Scouts of America Troop 10 Barrington, IL MAILING LABEL HERE HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

A Newsletter for Troop 10 Scouts and Their Families December 2002 Scoutmaster Minute By Mr. Ryan J., Scoutmaster As most of you know, in Troop 10, we have had a tradition of setting 2-year terms for our Scoutmaster and for our Troop Committee Chairman. This goes along with our troop philosophy of "many hands make light work" and it gives our boys the advantage of renewed leadership energy on a regular basis. I also believe that this one of the keys to Troop 10's success. My term as Scoutmaster and George F's term as Committee Chairman will end in June We are fortunate enough to have a great team that has agreed to take over at that time. Hank S. has graciously accepted the challenge of being our next Scoutmaster and Tom K. has kindly agreed to become our next Committee Chairman. Our thanks and congratulation to both of these men as they continue to build on the great foundation we have in Troop 10. In the meantime, George and I will continue in our current rolls with enthusiasm through June, at which time we will continue to work with and support Troop 10 in other roles. Despite the unseasonably cold weather, the annual family campout at White Pines was a great success. Our "TurkeyMeister," Mr. Tom K., and his crew (including master carver Mr. Dan P.) deep-fried a dozen delicious turkeys, and each patrol, including the adult patrol, prepared the accompanying side dishes for a great feast. All of our guests were able to eat in heated and well-lit comfort thanks to the efforts of Mr. Jeff S. and his team. (In fact, the dining accommodations were so plush that I was surprised that we didn't need a building permit to be allowed to put it up!!) The scouts and their families had a great time and took advantage of the many activities at this campout, including a nature hike, orienteering, the famous monkey bridge and a zip line. Many of the younger scouts took advantage of the opportunity to do advancement work. This work, plus the fact that it was below freezing both nights may qualify those boys for the Frostfire Award. Those who have achieved it will be recognized for that at the next Court of Honor. In November and December, our high school scouts will continue having one meeting each month separately from the rest of the troop. For November, they are planning on a night of laser tag and in December, it looks like bowling will be on tap. These meeting are a great opportunity for the older boys to do things that appeal to them while the younger boys can work separately on their scout skills and advancement. So far, this program has been a winner by allowing us to plan activities that have greater appeal for both sets of scouts and we hope to continue it. 10 PHILMONT CALL-IN WRAP-UP A big Troop 10 ":Thank You" to the following adults for participating in the Philmont call-in on November 9, George F. Bob H. (calling in from Minnesota) Mike L. Tom K. Tom Ko. Faye S. (calling in from Kentucky) Mike T. Bill T. Nick W. These fine individuals utilized their auto-dialers and redialers during the three-hour window in a valiant attempt to secure a reservation for three crews to go trekking in the summer of Bill T. was the first to make contact and discover that the number of reservations available had been exhausted. Bill made sure that Troop 10 secured a spot on the waiting list. Please keep you fingers crossed that spots for three crews open up. UM Church Rummage Sale Clean Up Many thanks to those who helped out with the clean up at the end of the rummage sale. Your help was very much appreciated by the church members & other volunteers. Dear Boy Scouts Mrs. W. We want to thank you for your help at our Rummage Sale. Many hands make for quick work. We do appreciate your time. We'd also like to thank Stella for coordinating all of this and helping as she did. Many, many thanks! Sincerely, Musicians Wanted! Young men and women years old interested in music and fun. For information, see the web site org/users/crew68 or call Shannon at or Jimmy at Attend our next rehearsal at the Lake Zurich American Legion Hall. Call for the date and bring your instrument and a music stand. The Advisor, Mr. Keyes, is now a Music Merit Badge counselor, too! The Hollows Campout by Ryan F. The campout at the Hollows in Crystal Lake was a great success! Most of the campers from Troop 10 arrived on Friday. Everything was going ok until the winds picked up and it took a whole lot longer to set up tents than anyone expected. On Saturday, during activities, the weather was great, but on Sunday it sprinkled and the weather got very cold. The Hollows provided many activities including logrolling, sawing, fishing competition, axe throwing, archery, and tent setup. Overall I think the Hollows was a great success! The Rummage Committee B.U.M.W.

CAMPING CORNER By Bill T.-ASM With the camping season well under way here, just a few reminders of our upcoming camping events: December We depart to the Hoover Outdoor Education Center in Plainfield, IL. This will be an overnight stay and we will be making homemade snowshoes. We order pizza for Saturday night's dinner. We return home early on Sunday. January Council Klondike Derby, Wilmot, WI. The Klondike will be all day Saturday and loaded with fun events. We may camp overnight. February Devils Head Ski Weekend, Merrimac, WI. We depart Friday night for our wonderful cabin. Ski all day and night on Saturday. Spend Saturday night again in the cabin with a pizza party. Return home Sunday early afternoon. March Illinois Caverns, Southern Illinois. This will be Troop 10's first visit to the Illinois Caverns. The "Windy City Grotto Club" will guide us in this "wild" cave. The cave is over 3 miles long with lots of belly crawling and climbing through tight spaces. Lots of cave life to be observed, Blind Cave Fish and Bats, just to name a few. This will be a great and unique event for Scouts and dads. We are especially grateful to be invited as the guests of "Windy City Grotto". April Devils Lake State Park, WI. You remember from last year. What can I say? You get to Rock Climb all day or until you can't physically climb any longer. May Warrens Dunes, Warren, MI. This campout is always a Troop 10 favorite. Just a great place to camp and lots of tall sand dunes to climb. Wow, what a lineup!! Remember, dads and moms we can always use your help to pull these campouts off. Native American Pow Wow and Craft Fair January 4, Lakota Dancers Pow Wow - Elgin High School Sponsored by Venturing Crew 476, NWSC. Free admission. Curious about Native American Customs? Come to the Pow Wow. Watch, learn, dance, and join in the fun. It's a great place for Scouts working on the Indian Lore merit badge & OA members to pick up info. Six drum circles will be there as well as hundreds of dancers & participants. Fourty Native American craftsmen will also be there so you can shop. The Venturing Crew is made up of young men and women years of age who are interested in learning Native American culture and sharing their knowledge with others through performances. Members are from throughout the council, including Troop 10, and many are Napowan staffers. See the Lakota Dancers web site at for more info on the dance team & the Pow Wow or call Troop 10 Scouts Go Dog Sledding By Bill T.-ASM On January 23-25, 2003 several Troop 10 Scouts and Leaders will be heading way up north to participate in a weekend long dog sledding expedition. We will arrive Friday afternoon get settled and attend orientation. After dinner we get introduced to our very own dogsled team. Saturday bring lots of training, having fun, getting to know our new friends and "running your team". We return home late on Sunday night. Luckily, the boys have no school on Friday or Monday, which is why we can make the 6-hour trip to Long Lake, WI. There were only limited spaces offered on a first come basis to Scouters 14 years old or older during a September Troop Meeting. Currently, all the spaces are filled, but a waiting list will be started. Next year possibly we can reserve more spaces and bring as many as 15 Scouts. Please keep this in mind and plan accordingly. Cost is $ I was told that the January issue of Scouter magazine would be featuring the very same trip we will be attending. So make sure you check out the article and see what the trip will look like. This will certainly be a trip of a lifetime. Now Mush!!!

Attention All Life Scouts and Parents of Life Scouts by Mr. Hank S. The purpose of this note is twofold. First I want to let everyone know of the upcoming transition. Since I will be stepping into the Scoutmaster position starting in June, we need to find replacements for me. The way it has worked out you will be getting a two for one swap. Mr. Tim G. has already been working with Mr. Tony C. and myself over the past month. So, Tim is very much involved in the process now. In addition to Tim, Mr. Ken L. has also agreed to assist with the coordination of Eagle Projects. This group will be able to provide all Life Scouts with the guidance they need while working on their project. Please join me in welcoming Tim and Ken to their new positions of Eagle Coordinators along with Tony who has been involved over the past year. I will also still be involved, but will also start to focus my time on learning my new position within the Troop. The second item that needs to be addressed is for when you are working on your Eagle Project. To allow the coordinators to better assist you through the process, we are going to ask that anyone coming to meet with us have 4 copies of their proposal with them. This will allow each of the coordinators and the scout to have their own copy. By providing everyone with a copy, it will allow us to better assist the boys in getting their proposal complete. If you have any questions, please talk to any of the Eagle Coordinators. Status Report on Kevin K. Attention Order of the Arrow Members: All Order of the Arrow members are encouraged to attend the OA chapter meetings. The next Order of the Arrow meeting will be December 5th at 7:30pm at Immanuel Lutheran on Plum Grove Rd. in Palatine. If you need more information or a ride, call your OA Rep, Crash K., or Ryan J. As most of you know, Kevin took a pretty hard spill when the zip-line failed at our recent White Pines Campout. We want to report that he suffered a pretty severe bruise but he didn't have any broken bones. While it was pretty painful, he should be just fine after it heals up. We all wish him well and expect to see him at our upcoming activities.

Scoutmaster Minute continued from page 1... In December, we will have our second annual Cabin Campout on December 14th and 15th. This is a two day- one-night event that gives the scouts a great break during the holiday season and their parents can get a "scout-less" shopping opportunity. This year, it will be a unique opportunity for our scouts to make their own snowshoes. Assistant Scoutmaster Bill T. has been doing all of the planning and we plan to have special snowshoe kits prepared so that the scouts will be able to go home with their own completed pair of snowshoes. The kits look great, and I am also looking forward to making my pair. This looks to be a very memorable experience, so mark your calendars and plan on joining us! In January, we will have another unique opportunity. On the weekend of January 24-26, we will have the Klondike Derby as well as our regular winter campout (along with the cross country skiing), both at Camp Crown in Wisconsin. On that same weekend, a few of our senior scouts will also be on a special trip to Northern Wisconsin to learn about dog sledding and to actually run a team of sled dogs. This should be a great set of winter camping experiences, so mark your calendars and plan to attend. Yours in Scouting, Ryan J., Scoutmaster Philmont 2003 by Mr. Hank S., Troop 10 Philmont Adult Crew Chief We currently have twelve from Troop 10 going to Philmont in July We are going as part of the NWSC contingent. Mr. Ryan J. and myself are currently attending planning meetings with the other adults who will also be going on this trip. We are planning the logistics of the trip. Those of you who are going need to start getting in shape. Getting into shape by hiking and carrying a pack. You can start with a day pack and we will build up from there. The first Council planned event is Saturday March 8th. We will be making a 10 mile hike with a pack weighing no less than 35 pounds. What we don't want is for this to be the first test a boy has made with a pack on his back. Prior to this hike we will also be donning some training with the boys. We will start to cover some of the basics with regards to backpacking. The training will be conducted by experienced backpackers from the Troop. I know that we are all looking forward to this trip. 15 Congrats to our very own ADAM S. for his efforts with the Barrington Football Team's 11-0 season, with a victory over Cary to win the Tri-County Youth Football League's Pac 10 Varsity Division title! Way to Go Adam!!! The white pines campout was a pretty fun campout except for all the problems we had during the day. I'm sure all of you heard about Kevin K. falling off of the zip-line. I enclosed the picture of him falling. I tried to get a picture of him going down the zip-line and by chance after the zip-line broke I got a picture of him falling to the ground. Amazingly he didn't break any bones. The rope bridge was a lot of fun to go on. This year there wasn't nearly as much climbing around though. Michael R Yo - Wazzup? PHOTO OF THE MONTH... Can You Guess What They Are Doing?????
