8 PAGE 8 Walking with the Manager Last Friday, City Manager Joyce Shanahan, along with a group of citizens and guest walker Dave Ponitz, Utilities Manager, enjoyed a beautiful early morning walk embarking from The Casements with a stop in Memorial Gardens and continuing south along Seton Trail to Seminole Avenue and returning north along Halifax Drive. The route was chosen to discuss the City s current reuse service area expansion to the south peninsula area. Reuse water is highly disinfected treated wastewater effluent used for irrigation purposes within the City s current service area comprised of Oceanside and Tomoka Oaks golf course facilities and residential areas within the City located north of Granada Blvd. and the Western Ormond Beach areas of Breakaway Trails and Hunter s Ridge. The City has received several requests for reuse service from residents and property owners within the South Peninsula area. Included were previous requests for service from Memorial Gardens and Hillside Cemetery. Dave discussed reuse consumption records for Memorial Gardens since service inception in April 2013, illustrating over 8.3 Million Gallons (Average Annual Day Demand 12,000 gallons per day) have been used at the facility. Hillside Cemetery is a 6 acre site off Seton Trail having an estimated demand of 35,000 gallons per day upon service availability being realized after completion of the Phase 1 project now underway. The South Peninsula Reuse Expansion Project is currently the City s highest priority alternative water supply project contained in the SJRWMD Water Supply Plan. The area is also contained in the City s Wastewater Facility Operation Permit with the Florida Dept of Environmental Protection for public access land based effluent disposal. Also discussed were future project phases proposed for reuse service expansion southward along Halifax Drive having eventual connections to several dry lines constructed with the previously described 2 inch water main replacement projects. During the walk, the completion in 2013 of the Airport Road Force Main Reuse Main Project was mentioned enabling expansion of the western Ormond Beach reuse service area to Breakaway Trails and Hunter s Ridge areas. Reuse service area expansion projects enable Ormond Beach to better meet current and future alternative water supply needs and also lessen plant effluent impacts on nearby surface water bodies such as the Halifax River. The use of reclaimed water reduces the dependence on groundwater sources for irrigation purposes and preserves these valuable resources for higher quality potable water supply needs.
9 PAGE 9 Indian Cultural Festival The Indian Cultural Festival was held at the Rockefeller Gardens on Sunday, April 12. The many attendees experienced native food, festivities and entertainment. The Al Hovey Incredible India photo collection displayed in The Casements Gallery was an added bonus for the festival. The many photos of real life in India are a priceless addition to the cultural event which was free to the public. PARKS This week the Leisure Services Parks staff completed several projects at Central Park. They trimmed back the overgrowth along the raised boardwalk and replaced a vandalized boardwalk trail sign. A depression was filled in and sod was replaced at Central Park II. The pedestrian walkways in Central Park I and II were blown off, and in Central Park III, the location of a memorial bench was changed. Staff installed new carpet padding at the Gymnastics Center. At Fortunato Park, a dog waste station was repaired. Herbicide was applied to weeds at the Birthplace of Speed Park. Traffic cones were taken from Andy Romano Beachfront Park and delivered to Public Works. Staff made Citywide restroom inspections, completed safety inspections of park facilities and equipment, and completed weekly inspections of park facilities for rental reservations.
