Each of the 50 participants has a disability, and the show allows them to shine for who they are and not focus on their disability. This year there was a wide range of performers who sang and danced to songs like YMCA, Jail House Rock, and Kick Up the Dust. There were many new faces in the pageant. Reverend Stephen Pessah and his son Nathan were the new Masters of Ceremony and introduced the participants with humor and excitement. An old friend, Christie Beu, returned to sing with the participants. All of the participants and performers did an excellent job and made it one of the best shows.
2 PAGE 2 Captain Christopher Roos Captain Christopher Roos began working for the City of Ormond Beach on March 6 in the Police Department. He was hired to replace Captain Crimins, who retired on February 28 after 25 years of service. Captain Roos is an Ormond Beach resident with over 20 years of experience in the law enforcement arena. Captain Roos was previously with the New Smyrna Beach Police Department and worked his way through the ranks as a dispatcher, patrol officer, Sergeant, Master Sergeant and Lieutenant. He also served as a SWAT team member and Team Commander. Prior to that, he served honorably in the United States Navy. Captain Roos is certified to teach firearms, taser and breathalyzer. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and is currently pursuing his bachelor s degree. Captain Roos is married with three children. Monarch Waystation The Department of Leisure Services is excited to announce that the Environmental Discovery Center is now a Monarch Waystation! Monarch Waystations provide monarchs with food and shelter during their annual reproduction and migration cycles. Waystations contribute to monarch conservation and foster the monarchs North American migration. Studies show that monarchs start to migrate south in September and arrive in Florida around October; some monarchs travel all the way from Canada to the Sunshine State. Because the Environmental Discovery Center grows milkweed and nectar plants, the new Monarch Waystation will help preserve the species and promote the spectacular migration phenomenon. This June, Enviro Camp plans to incorporate the Monarch Waystation into their summer camp program. Campers will learn more about monarch life cycles, migration patterns, and habitats during the Scales & Tales week. Kids will plant milkweed, witness metamorphosis first-hand, and release butterflies into the garden. The PAL Community Program Coordinator, Lisa Messersmith, will give the children a presentation and help the youngsters conserve the EDC s monarch habitat.
3 PAGE 3 Archaeology Works: Shells On Saturday, March 11, Emily Jane Murray with the Florida Public Archaeology Network, led a group of 27 in a program that explores how archaeologists find clues to our past. She brought with her a wonderful collection of shells. Participants had an opportunity to imagine how people from years ago would make use of shells in every day life. Some shells were fashioned into hand tools such as knives, shovels and hammers. Others were used as jewelry, scoops and cups. Everyone enjoyed holding these pieces of history in their hands. The colors, shapes and textures were mesmerizing. Thank you again to Emily for an incredible and informative program at The Environmental Discovery Center in Central Park. 4 PAGE 4 Walk MS On Saturday, March 11, a crystal clear morning ushered hundreds into Rockefeller Gardens to fight for a great cause. Once again, the National MS Society s Mid Florida Chapter congregated in the Riverside Drive park in an effort to end multiple sclerosis forever. Walk MS: Volusia County at Ormond Beach brings together families, friends, and co-workers in an annual fundraiser walk. Beginning at 8am, team members and individuals registered in the south garden before embarking on their trek. From 9am to 11am, passionate participants marched across the Granada Bridge, through Fortunato Park, and back to Rockefeller Gardens. The mid-morning event included a live DJ, Dunkin Donuts catering, and the Ormond Beach Police Department s DARE car. Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, Novartis Pharmaceuticals, Sanofi Genzyme, Angels n Paws, Crystal Geyser Alpine Spring Water, and more sponsored the walk. In 2016, Walk MS: Volusia County at Ormond Beach raised $12,350; this year they hope to raise over $13,000. PARKS The Leisure Services Parks staff installed a new strap on the tennis court, removed old foul poles and installed new sleeves. Central Park III had a new engraved park bench installed. An engraved park bench was also installed at Ames Park. At the South Ormond Neighborhood Center, a memorial plaque and coquina rock were cleaned and reinstalled, and with the assistance of the Streets and Stormwater crews, staff removed a broken sidewalk, cleaned the area, and prepared it for a concrete pour. At The Casements, four picnic tables and a bike rack were removed for future design. As usual, citywide safety inspections were performed of all parks and equipment and weekly inspections were done of parks facilities for reservations. All park reservations were posted at various facilities.
