For many, the new season means leaves, pumpkins, and festivals. At The Casements, autumn ushers in The Casements Guild s new fiscal year. On Wednesday morning, The Casements Guild reconvened after a summer hiatus. Carole Benson, the new president, thanked everyone for attending the first general body meeting. During the meeting, board members discussed upcoming events like Rockefeller Revisited and the annual Christmas Gala. Additionally, the group finalized an October social gathering at Willow Tree Café in Sanford. The group has a busy schedule planned for the next few months! The Casements Guild is a volunteer based non-profit organization. Guild members provide guided tours on the hour Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; Saturday tours are given at 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. While tours are free, donations are accepted and encouraged to help maintain the historic home s glory. For thirty-eight years, The Casements Guild has preserved local history and promoted cultural education. The Guild currently seeks to expand its membership and encourages local residents to join the organization. If you appreciate historical sites, like to interact with people, and can spare a little time throughout the year, The Casements Guild encourages you to become a member today! 2 PAGE 2 Readers Choice Award Staff was very excited to learn that the annual Art in the Park event received a Hometown News 2017 Readers Choice Award! The 45th annual Art in the Park was held this year in Rockefeller Gardens on Saturday, May 6 th and Sunday, May 7 th. Thousands of people attended this two day event and sold out with 100 artists and crafters, entertainment, and food vendors. Returning for the second year, the Girl Scouts Art Exhibit, presented by Sunrise Community, was located in The Casements and featured several hundred multimedia pieces by 5-18 year old girls from Volusia County and Central Florida. This impressive show of creativity included photography, painting, drawing, sculpting, textiles, and collage. A fashion show and awards presentation was held on Sunday. The Girl Scouts volunteered in the Free Kids Craft Zone. Kids were able make a special gift for Mother s Day and they also contributed to the coloring mural. On behalf of the City of Ormond Beach Department of Leisure Services, we thank all the volunteers, sponsors, artists, crafters, participants, and the community for their continued support of this great family event.
3 PAGE 3 The Casements Makes Wedding Dreams Come True Wedding bells ring all year long in the City s numerous parks and gardens. Even though Hurricane Irma halted some nuptials this month, The Casements always finds a way to ensure customer satisfaction. On September 26, The Casements held an impromptu wedding ceremony in front of the fireplace. At noon, six people gathered in John D. Rockefeller s living room to witness the union between a blushing bride and handsome groom. The simple ceremony featured fresh roses; the historic home s unassuming elegance provided the remaining ambiance. The couple originally planned to use Ormond Memorial Gardens to tie the knot, but Hurricane Irma s winds created substantial debris. Thanks to The Casements staff, the pair was joined in matrimony on the beautiful autumn day. As always, the Cultural Center strives to provide excellent guest services to all. For more information about renting The Casements or various City parks, please call Movies on the Halifax On Friday, October 6, at 7:15 p.m., the City s Leisure Services Department and The Casements Guild will present Hocus Pocus in Rockefeller Gardens. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket and come out and enjoy the movie with your friends and family! Refreshments for purchase will be available. Moving Rating: Hocus Pocus is a PG rated movie. Parental guidance is suggested as some material may not be suitable for children.
4 PAGE 4 Hurricane Irma Recovery CITY OF ORMOND BEACH: PERMITS for residential and commercial emergency repairs related to Hurricane Irma: Contractors and businesses must appear at the City s Planning/Building permit counter, 22 S. Beach Street, to provide their license to prove they are eligible to do the work intended as well as to receive a no fee permit. No fee permits for hurricane damage related work will be waived for 60 days from Friday, September 8, 2017, through Tuesday, November 7, The public is cautioned to hire Florida licensed contractors only and to be wary of door-to-door solicitors asking for large deposits or who promise to speed up the permit process. The Neighborhood Improvement Division (NID) will expedite tree permits and waive any permit fees for the removal of trees threatening the life, safety or welfare of City residents and businesses. The removal of trees MUST be related to damages resulting from Hurricane Irma. Yard Debris Yard debris should be placed curbside for pickup, but not in the roadways, not covering stormwater drains, and not near fire hydrants. Yard debris should not be in bags and should be separated from all other trash and construction materials. All construction debris must be kept separate from yard debris. Placing debris in the roadways will impact the storm cleanup as well as hinder emergency vehicle response. Please refrain from removing fallen trees or limbs from roadways. If you find a tree or limb that needs removal, please contact Central Dispatch at Tree Removal Contractors If you hire a contractor for tree removal services, they are required to remove the debris from your property and properly dispose of it pursuant to City of Ormond Beach Code of Ordinances Section 10-65, Contractor Debris. No Open Burning in the City of Ormond Beach Open burning of commercial waste, residential trash, garbage, lawn debris, clippings, trees or other debris on residential, commercial or industrial property is prohibited within the City. 5 PAGE 5 Debris removal contractors continue working throughout the City. We estimate it will take up to 20 days to complete the first pass. Crowder Gulf, the City s contractor, began debris collection from the City s rights-of-way on Saturday, September 16, as soon as their trucks arrived. Debris collection has been progressing smoothly and while there is still much debris to be removed the City is significantly ahead in this process. As of the close of business on Thursday, September 28, 1,139 loads of debris had been collected (51,348 cubic yards) in thirteen days. Additionally, 20 leaning trees and 3,439 hanging limbs have been removed. The debris removal crews are in neighborhoods throughout the City seven days a week from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. On the next page is a map of areas where a first pass has occurred as indicated by red dots. Each dot does not represent a household, but rather an area where debris has been pushed into a pile and picked up. Root balls and large stumps will be removed after all other storm debris has been removed. Volusia County is responsible for debris removal on County roads within the City of Ormond Beach as well as that debris in unincorporated areas of Volusia County with Ormond Beach addresses. The County has recently hired Phillips & Jordan, Inc., to serve as their debris contractor. By keeping the storm debris collection specific to each local jurisdiction (i.e. City, County or State), then each jurisdiction can maintain eligibility for FEMA reimbursement for its debris removal efforts. As of today, a County pick up schedule has not yet been determined. To help residents throughout Volusia County dispose of vegetative debris from Hurricane Irma, the County has opened temporary residential debris reduction drop-off sites that will be open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week through Sunday, October 22, at the following locations: Tomoka Landfill, 1990 Tomoka Farms Road, Port Orange; Old Plymouth Landfill, 1991 W Plymouth Ave., DeLand; Intersection of Rhode Island Avenue and Veterans Memorial Parkway, Orange City. Volusia County residents and small landscape-type businesses may bring Hurricane Irma vegetative debris only to drop-off sites without charge. Residents must show proof of residency, and small landscape-type businesses will need to complete a form to drop-off debris at the sites. The only debris that will be accepted is vegetative debris (leaves, branches and cut trees) which has not been bagged. If you have any questions, or need more information, please call Volusia County s debris hotline at from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Sunday. In the City of Ormond Beach, if you hire a contractor for tree removal services, they are required to remove the debris from your property and properly dispose of it pursuant to City of Ormond Beach Code of Ordinances, Section 10-65, Contractor Debris. Also, please be advised that open burning of commercial waste, residential trash, garbage, lawn debris, clippings, trees or other debris on residential, commercial or industrial property is prohibited within the City. (City of Ormond Beach Code of Ordinances, Section 9.2) If you have any questions, please contact the City s Public Works Department at Please check the City s website ( for daily updates regarding storm debris information.
