We couldn t think of a better way to give thanks, than by donating non-perishable food items to the Thanksgiving Food Drive, for those in need. The following is a list of items needed to make our Thanksgiving baskets complete: - Dressing/Stuffing Mix - Canned or Instant Potatoes - Cranberry Sauce - Canned Vegetables - Pumpkin Pie Mix - Pie Shell (non-refrigerated) - Dried or Canned Milk - Roasting Pan In addition to these items, we also welcome: - Dried Beans - Peanut Butter - Canned Meat/Tuna/Ham - Rice, Pasta, or Cereal - Soup - Canned Fruit - Bread or Rolls - Gift Certificate (Purchase Turkey) From now until November 23, 2015, you may drop off your donations to any of the following locations: Highland City Hall: Base Line Highland YMCA: 7793 Central Ave. Highland Police Station: Baseline Highland Community News: Baseline, Suite G If you would like to donate a PERISHABLE item or would like more information about the Food Drive, please contact Lisa Henley at the Highland Police Station (909) City of Highland ~ Base Line Highland, CA ~ ~

All of us need to take a role in helping protect each other and our families and friends in the event of an emergency.

2 P a g e 2 Administration Emergency Preparedness Why Prepare? More than 82% of U.S. residents are aware that emergency preparedness is important to handle disasters. Yet of these, most have made little, if any, actual preparations! What about you? Are you ready? All of us need to take a role in helping protect each other and our families and friends in the event of an emergency. From fires to landslides to ever -present earthquakes, we continuously face emergency situations. Disasters disrupt hundreds of thousands of lives every year. Each disaster has lasting effects, both to people and property. If a disaster occurs in your community, local government and disaster relief organizations will try to help you. But you need to be ready as well. Local responders may not be able to reach you immediately or they may need to focus their efforts elsewhere. You should know how to respond to severe weather or any disaster that could occur in your area, including earthquakes, wildfires, landslides, pandemic, flooding, terrorism and more. You should also be ready to be self-sufficient for three to seven days. This may mean providing for your own shelter, first aid, food, water and sanitation. We know that the next emergency is coming. We just don t know when or what kind it will be. But we can and must prepare now for the next emergency. Our family, friends and community depend on it. 3 P a g e 3 Community Development Community Trails Committee: Congratulations Joseph Ellis! At the November 12, 2015 regular meeting, the Community Trails Committee welcomed their newest member. Welcome aboard! At the November 12, 2015 regular meeting, the Community Trails Committee considered the following items: CTC Work Program and Trail Section Priority List The Community Trails Committee adopted the ranking of future Trail Section Improvements listed as part of its Work Program Discussion Items and Updates related to: 1) Planning for Community Trails Day Event; 2) Guidance for City Creek Trails Sign Design and Content; 3) Consideration of Holding Bi-Monthly Meetings; and 4) Trail Project Updates The Community Trails Committee provided staff direction and guidance in completing the subject topics. T he Highland Improvement Team HIGHLAND IMPROVEMENT TEAM (HIT) is looking for new volunteers to join our team! Volunteers of all ages are welcome! HIT cleanups are family oriented and safe for all ages, so even the younger children can join in the fun. Volunteers that are under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult. HIT s goal is to beautify Highland focusing on assisting senior homeowners. Volunteers can assist seniors with yard cleanup and garage clean outs. Yard cleanups include mowing grass; trimming shrubs, weed pulling and minor landscaping which can include planting flowers and small trees. Garage clean outs include clearing rafters and removing bulky items to the trash. In addition to these types of cleanups, the Highland Improvement Team also does community cleanups such as litter and graffiti abatement projects and park cleanups. Come out to the next cleanup on Saturday, November 21, 2015 to support the Highland Improvement Team and find out more about us! The cleanup runs from 8am to noon. All are welcome contact Volunteer Services to sign up.

P a g e 4 BLOOD DRIVE Highland s last blood drive of the year is fast approaching! The blood drive will be at the Highland Police Station on Monday, November 23, 2015 from 1:30pm to 6:30pm.

The process only takes about an hour to complete. To make your blood donation even smoother, make an appointment today by contacting Volunteer Services.

Blood supply is in high demand during the holiday season. This is a perfect opportunity for you to help increase blood donations while giving back to your community by donating the Gift of Life. The process only takes about an hour to complete. To make your blood donation even smoother, make an appointment today by contacting Volunteer Services. FYI as a special incentive, LifeStream is offering each donor a movie ticket for their priceless donation. In addition, each donor will receive slice of pie in the canteen after their donation. BICYCLE HELMET SAFETY INFORMATION Did you know that while riding a bicycle, a rider must also be wearing a helmet for safety? In order for the helmet to properly protect the rider, it must be worn correctly. Volunteers will be on-hand at the Highland Family YMCA from 3pm-5pm on Tuesday, November 17 th to conduct helmet safety checks on your personal helmets, provide information on the correct way to wear a helmet as well as assist you in a hands-on instruction. Please remember to bring your helmet with you so we can adjust it properly. If you do not have a helmet, a helmet will be provided for your use during the hands-on instruction. One day to get our neighbors, friends and community leaders excited about what can be accomplished when we all work together. One day to make recycling bigger and better 365 days a year. As a friend of America Recycles Day, you probably recycle every day! As we approach the big day, help us make a social splash by continuing to recycle...and also take a photo while doing it! Your recycling photo will help remind your social network to recycle and you'll become eligible to receive one of several recycled-content prizes! How to Enter Simply post your photo on the City of Highland s Facebook page ( cityofhighland.cityhall) as a comment to the contest post from now November 15 th. Contest Rules Duplicate posts will not count as multiple entries. One post per person please. Photos must depict an individual(s) properly recycling. Photos must not contain copyrighted material. Winners will be selected at random through a raffle and announced on November 16 th. Re-Pete wants you to get out there and get recycling! THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY TRASH PICK-UP Burrtec Waste Industries, Inc. and Cal Disposal Co. Inc. will be closed on Thursday, November 26, 2015 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Therefore, solid waste, green waste and recycling collection service will be delayed by one day. Your regularly scheduled collection service will resume the following week. Please keep in mind that your street sweeping services will also be delayed by one day as well. 6 P a g e 6 San Bernardino National Forest to Lower Fire Restrictions on Friday, November 13, 2015 With recent rain across the southland, forest officials on the San Bernardino National Forest reduce fire restrictions effective Friday November 13, As a result of lowering the fire restrictions, visitors may have wood and charcoal fires in agencyprovided campfire rings at campgrounds, picnic areas and yellow post sites. Recreational target shooting is permitted within designated sites and public shooting ranges. We ask the public to always call ahead and check conditions, since conditions do change, whether it s a winter storm or Santa Ana wind conditions, said Forest Supervisor Jody Noiron. Current fire restriction and guidelines in effect on the San Bernardino National Forest are as follows: Wood and charcoal campfires are allowed only in developed campgrounds, picnic areas and Yellow Post campsites within agency-provided fire rings or designated stoves. Campfire permits are required for propane and gas stoves and lanterns used outside of developed recreation sites. Recreational shooting is limited to designated sites and public shooting ranges operated under special use permit only, except those engaged in legal hunting. An approved spark arrester is required for any internal combustion engine operated on designated forest routes. These include chainsaws, generators, motorcycles, and off-highway vehicles. Smoking is limited to enclosed vehicles, developed recreation sites and areas cleared of vegetation, three feet in diameter. Fireworks are always prohibited on the San Bernardino National Forest. Tracer, armor piercing, steel core, and Teflon ammunitions are also prohibited, as is discharging a firearm at any exploding target.
