1 Parker Newcomers Peggy Hunter Editor pncnewsletter.com Presidents Message Liz Johnson A note from your incoming president...to each of you. Thank you for the confidence you had in electing me president of Parker Newcomers. Thanks to Carolyn Hedeen, the board members, committee chairmen, and those in charge of the numerous activities for the wonderful job they did during this last year as they volunteered their time and talents to PNC. We are lucky to have another wonderful group of women to do the same, so the year can be one of the greatest. Please note a few changes that are taking place. Our dues are due in June. This will enable the Membership and Directory committees to get our new directory out to you by September. We will continue to have 1st Wednesday coffees and the potluck dinners throughout the summer. I hope you will be able to attend these events. I would love to hear from any of you who have ideas for programs, places for our luncheons, new activities, Out & About ideas, and names of people you ve hired for jobs around the house that did a fantastic job (we want to put a list in the directory). Keep in mind that PNC is a vital part of our community. We strive to make new friends, provide activities for social contact and welcome newcomers from Parker, Douglas and the surrounding counties to our group to acquaint them with the many advantages we have to offer. I am looking forward to a great year with you. Let s make it happen. Have a wonderful summer. She was born and raised in California, married her husband Michael in San Diego and raised their two daughters there. She spent her career with Chase Home Finance for 33 years, retiring as branch manager/vice President. Michael retired from Defense Contracting and they were on to their next adventure, moving to beautiful Coeur d Alene Idaho. They sold real estate for five years. Their daughter moved to Colorado and they followed, settling in Franktown. They now are proud grandparents of five grandchildren, Karen is a stay-at-home Grammy and Michael sells real estate in Elizabeth. They ve enjoyed traveling the world over, especially Germany and Hawaii. 4 Cancer League of Colorado 14th Annual Race for Research 5K run/walk Sunday, August 22 in Washington Park. The Race for Research is a family fun run in memory of Michele Plachy-Rubin. Michele was a young wife, mother and kindergarten teacher in the Denver Public Schools when she was diagnosed with brain cancer in December of The Race for Research was conceived by Michele s friends to raise money to fund local cancer research. Tragically, Michele lost her fight with cancer in May of 1998 but The Race for Research continues as an opportunity for men, women and children to help fight cancer in Michele s memory. All proceeds from the Race for Research are donated to the Cancer League of Colorado, a 501c3 non profit organization, with no paid staff. Participants have ranged in age from one to eighty-one and have included doctors, nurses, teachers, families, runners and walkers of all abilities, as well as Michele s friends and family. Everyone is welcome! Organizers of this year s Race for Research expect up to 1,000 participants and 55 volunteers at this year s event. Chip time is available and awards are given to the top walkers/runners in various age categories. We will also present a traveling team trophy to the team with the highest number of participants. New this year, we are offering optional online fundraising support. You can raise money for cancer research without leaving your home. Awards will be given to the individual and team who raise the most donations. Unable to attend this year not to worry. We are offering Sleep in for Research. Sign up for a $30 donation (or more) and we will mail your t-shirt to you. Register online at HYPERLINK to reserve a T-shirt in your preferred size. After August 8, you can also register in person at any front range Runner s Roost location or Running Wild in Highlands Ranch. Race day registration will be open at 7:00am and the race starts at 8:00am. Race day fees will be $10 per person higher. We will also present the Miracle Mile, sponsored by Morton Publishing. Signs featuring photos of Michelle and others who have had cancer will be on display. A free 12 x 18 lawn sign will be offered to the first 300 registrants to celebrate Survivors or to remember those who have lost their battle with Cancer. We will have entertainment from the band, Look Both Ways, and a free pancake breakfast following the race, compliments of Bone Fish Grill. Please help us find a cure for cancer in Michele s memory by participating in the Race for Research!
