1 HAMPTONS MESSENGER Social Director Moment By Monica Tynes Welcome New Residents! August 2015 August is here and that means summer is almost gone. When I was a kid, August was the month I would get to visit with my grandparents. One set lived in Conyers, Georgia. They lived out in the country. We would pick peaches and blackberries until all of our containers were full. Then we would go to the kitchen to wash and peel everything. That evening we would all gather on the big screened in porch to make homemade peach and blackberry ice cream. It was so much fun getting to sit on top of the ice cream freezer as it was being cranked. That ice cream was so good! My other grandparents lived in New Orleans, Louisiana. My grandmother and I would ride downtown with my grandfather when he went to work. We would catch the streetcar and get off at every stop to go shopping. Café du Monde was my favorite stop. There is nothing like a fresh hot French beignet! These are memories that I will always carry with me. This month make some memories with your grandchildren (or grand friends) are sure to stay with both of you forever. Betty Smith, 2105 Director s Note We all know August as the final month of meteorological summer, the hottest three months of the year. But I have found there are quite a few interesting bits of folklore regarding this month. For example, on August 10 th, St. Laurence s Day, If the weather is fair, fine autumn and good wine we will share. Or if St. Bartholomew s Day (August 24 th ) is Misty in the morning, a cold winter forecast is the warning. Finally, for every fog in August there will be a snowfall in the winter ahead. Whatever folklore says, though, here s wishing for a fall full of good food and fun times with great friends! Best, Liz
